Magnetic Building Blocks

Blocks With a Mind of their Own

What do you get when you add a magnet to a classic wooden toy? Incredibly dynamic play. These blocks really move. They jump around and either attract or repel each other, depending on the positive/negative charge of the hidden magnets. The magnetism can be a little tricky when you first build with these blocks, but a little experimentation is all part of the fun. You can build gravity-defying structures, move blocks without touching them, and really stretch your inner engineer.

Chris and Will Haughey are the inventors of these amazing blocks, which are made with beechwood from Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras. These brothers deliberately chose to locate their company in Honduras, where the majority of people live in poverty. They’re driven to not only create beautiful, innovative toys but also to help the people of Honduras by providing jobs, taking care of the environment, and spurring entrepreneurship in the area. It’s not lip service for Chris and Will — they’re the real deal. We’re really proud to spread the word about this wonderful new toy from a pair of toy makers who are on a genuine social and ecological mission.

My name is Will Haughey, one of the team here at Tegu, a new toy company that’s a little different. My brother Chris and I founded Tegu primarily to help Honduras, one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere. In fact, Tegu is short for Tegucigalpa, which is Honduras’s capital city. Three years ago we set out on a mission to invent a product that would be made in Honduras and sold throughout the world. The formula was and is simple: the more product we sell, the more jobs and opportunities we create in Honduras.

When we started kicking this vision around, we didn’t know what we were going to make. I was actually working on Wall Street and my brother was a hot shot management consultant. After an immense amount of classroom research, we’re excited today to share with you our new toy invention, Tegu blocks. Tegu blocks are made of eco-friendly hardwoods and magically incorporate very strong magnets. The result is a new wooden block, maybe even a reinvented wooden block. It’s familiar, yet surprising. I have had the privilege of personally watching these blocks unleash “ah ha” moments in children (and parents) around the country. In short, they’re special and we’re delighted to partner with Daily Grommet to make them available to you today. Questions? Talk to me…

Are they all gone? ... I think you should put up a sold out sign ... so I don't look all over the site for an Add to Cart button.

I think a great use for these blocks would be to take them to restaurants...kids can play quietly and they won't spill all over the place. I am going to see if my kids would like this for my grand daughter.

Would you post the dimensions of the blocks? It's hard to tell from the pics, and it's not posted on Tegu's website, as far as I could tell. Thanks!

Thank you for all your kind comments! I've just spoken with my brother who runs the factory in Honduras. The workers there are thrilled that you appreciate their handiwork and are happy to be busy making these for you.

I had great fun playing with these blocks to create the product photographs ... my sister, her two friends and I managed to build various animals and everyday items ... and we all agreed this would be a fun project for a girls (adults!) night out. A glass of wine sure got our creativity going !!! I don't think I've laughed so much in a long time ...

I think that these are destined to be a new classic toy - right there with Lincoln Logs, Legos and Train sets as the type of toy you buy for your children and then store for your future grandchildren. I'd be tempted to keep it in the packaging as a collector item! I believe we are witnessing the beginning of something great.

I love the Tegu story. Joanne was so excited when she found it...I still remember the day when she first mentioned it to me. I am chuckling a bit at the parts of the video with Joanne and Jeanne. We give them a hard time for finishing each other sentences and talking simultaneously in the office. Like they share a brain or something. You can sense it in the video....watch the first minute.

While visiting the National Museum of Art, my five year old son saw Tegu blocks on display and instantly became a fan! He sat there for a good 30 minutes playing with the set ( In absolute silence) before we had to move on..much to his dismay. These blocks are not only beautiful, but they're so much fun! I just ordered the 26 piece, natural set and I can't wait to get them. I do wish the jungle set was available for purchase here, as I'm pretty sure that was the set he was playing with at the museum..Regardless he's going to love opening the set on Christmas morning. Thank you for offering a quality toy that I'm so happy to gift to my son.

I think what you are doing is so special to help children who are in Honduras. I think my grandson maybe too old for wooden blocks but he is a wiz at lego's. I will order the blocks and if not a hit with him I will donate them to a young childhood school in nearby Asbury Park, NJ.

again congratulations on your brilliant idea.

We have friends who go on mission trips to Honduras where there is great positive volition to the gospel of Jesus Christ. These lay missionaries sew and craft things, then take with them handmade dresses, dolls, cross necklaces . . , they say the people down there are so appreciative of anything!! So, I'm buying your 40 pc. set for my grandchildren's Christmas. Surely you two brilliant guys have been given divine guidance to think of some way to help these people become self-sufficient as they grow. People have so much more confidence when they actually work for what they have . . . a shame that many Americans don't know that, too.

I think these are great for my three year old but as a parent with also a baby who still puts things in his mouth I'm a little concerned about choking hazards and also swallowing magnetic items which can be life threatening. Do you provide these warnings on your boxes so parents can be aware especially in other countries who might not know about this danger?
