Wine to Water

You Have One Last Gift to Give

One Man, Lots of Clean Water

Doc Hendley reminds us what a difference one person can make. In early 2004 he was bartending and playing music in nightclubs around Raleigh, North Carolina, when he first started learning about the 1 billion people in the world who lack access to adequate water and sanitation. “Water kills more children than HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Every 15 seconds a child dies because of unclean drinking water. When I heard things like that, I was absolutely shocked…. I decided to do something about it,” Doc recalls.

Doc used his bartending skills to organize a wine tasting event that raised funds for clean water initiatives in developing countries. Six months later, he was living in Darfur, installing water systems. Fast forward to today, and Doc’s organization, called Wine to Water, has launched projects to provide clean water and sanitation in countries including Cambodia, Haiti, India, Peru and Uganda. His aid organization still raises funds through wine tasting events (which explains the name), but there are other ways to help, too. A $50 donation will pay for a ceramic water filter that a family can use for two years. Just $100 will fund a bio-sand filter that can remove 98% of impurities, bacteria and viruses in a school or hospital water supply. With $500, Wine to Water can help build a shallow well that could provide clean water for an entire community for up to 10 years.

We heard about Doc from Daily Grommet friend Steve Curran of Pod Digital Design. Steve heard Doc speak at a Boston event where he had the entire audience mesmerized. We agreed with Steve that his story just had to be told. Most of us have never had to worry about finding clean water. If we all pitch in, Doc and his team at Wine to Water will keep erasing that worry for as many people around the world as they can.

I'm honored to have Daily Grommet tell you all the story of our organization, Wine to Water, and I am sincerely grateful for any contributions you are able to make.

Wine To Water is a non-profit aid organization focused on providing clean water to needy people around the world. Over 1 billion people in the world today lack access to adequate water and sanitation. We are devoted to fighting this epidemic. Wine symbolizes fortune in our society. Our goal is to give the fortunate population an opportunity to fight for those who can’t fight for themselves.

I’ll be checking in later to say hello and answer any questions you may have. Thank you for your time and have a Blessed Holiday!

    Doc Hendley,

    President/Founder, Wine to Water

    Hi Doc,

I just made a donation, and then checked out your website at http://winetowater.org as I needed to find your EIN or Tax ID for tax deduction purposes. Can you please point me to that? Thanks!

Great projects - and I've even passed along the info about your sand and ceramic filters to a local organization I support (they work on water issues in Borgne, Haiti) b/c I think they could benefit from that technology.

    Merry Christmas!

My brother was in the Peace Corps many years ago to help bring clean water to communities in Africa and it's incredible to see the progress in the technologies since then. I like what Jeff said about sharing this knowledge with other organizations and hope that your mission grows and grows. Thanks for doing what you do "doc"!

Hi @Jules! Sorry for the late reply :) I started WTW Back in January 2004. I was shocked at the severity of the water crisis and I couldn't just sit back and do nothing.

So, being a bartender and musician, I used the only skill set I had to do something about this crisis. I hosted events called Wine To Water events where I poured wine and played music for free to raise support for this crisis. I had no idea of the following that we would soon receive and the success that would come. I think people were looking for a way to give back to such a huge issue... while having some fun at the same time :)

Thank you all again so much for supporting our cause, and please feel free to email me anytime with more specific questions.

    Hi @Barbara

Thank you so much for your interest in hosting an event! Wine events are one of our favorite ways for people to support us because it allows for more hands on involvement than just giving a donation... AND they're fun too :)

We have some info on our site to help get you started but if you want a little more help please feel free to email me personally and I can help walk you through how best to host an event in your area. My email is [email protected]

There are a lot of different types of events that we have done. We have hosted events in bars, restaurants, nightclubs, homes, and many other venues as well. So I will be more than happy to help get you going :)

    Have a great week!
