Smooth Shaving

Stan Ades and CC Sofronas at Pacific Shaving Company have another winner for your medicine cabinet. Pacific Shaving was established in 2002, and has been helping keep faces clean shaven ever since. We’re already big fans of their skin-saving Shaving Oil. It comes in a tiny bottle, but this powerful skin lubricant and moisturizer lasts longer than any conventional can of shaving cream and does a much better job reducing razor burn and irritation.

We’re excited to share more products from Pacific Shaving. Particularly the Blade Oil. If you apply Blade Oil to your razor after use, it can last nearly twice as long. It’s not the act of shaving that dulls the blade, it’s water left on the blade that causes corrosion and can lead to nicks and cuts on your face. Blade Oil slows the effects of oxidation and extends blade life. You’ll save money by buying fewer blades, and produce less waste for the landfill.

If you do happen to nick your skin, Pacific Shaving has a product for that, too. It’s called the Nick Stick. The Nick Stick is a liquid roll-on (it dries clear) with aloe, vitamins A and E, and other good stuff that takes away the sting and promotes healing. It’s a great thing to have around the house, not only for shaving mishaps but also for any scraped knees and cuts your kids might get.

The 3 Step Shaving Kit is the star of the lineup. The kit includes an pre-shave exfoliating wash, all natural shave cream, and a post-shave daily moisturizer. All three are made of natural and organic ingredients. The kit includes all you need for a smooth clean shaven face, with happy and healthy skin.

Hello Daily Grommet friends! I am the founder of Pacific Shaving and very excited to be back here today to share and discuss Pacific Shaving’s growing product line of natural and eco-friendly shaving essentials for men *and* women. Our product development guidelines follow three simple tenets. They must be good for the skin, good for the wallet and good for the earth. Simple, right? Looking forward to a lively online conversation today . Questions about our products? Shaving techniques? Corporate responsibility? Music? Wine? Nothing is off limits today - speak soon!

This is the second time that we are featuring Pacific Shaving's products which means we are retiring their first feature. We didn't want to lose the great comments from the first feature, so we have copied them below so we can continue the conversation here.

My husband swears by this. He won't shave for 2 weeks sometimes and this is the only product that doesn't leave him scarred, blotchy, or otherwise wanting to keep growing his beard! I use it now too and the one tiny bottle has lasted 6 months already between the 2 of us.

    Hi Stan,

This oil looks good for my husband. One question on the Nick Stick... is it the same product as the styptic pencils my dad used to torture us with after our falls? Ouch!

@Katherine—the man in the mirror is Jesse from coBRANDit, who is normally BEHIND the camera. He shoots our videos and also edits them into what you see. (Which is always a big improvement over the raw material we give him.) @Janine….Yes!! thank you for suggesting this Grommet and for telling people how long it lasts. SIx months is impressive.

@everyone….new topic…we get the majority of our ideas from unsolicited suggestions. But I have a specific request: I am looking for a good dish drainer that I won’t hate sitting out on my counter. Please send me any ideas. jules at dailygrommet.com

Hi Sarah. Yes. Essentially we've given the 150-year-old styptic pencil a face lift. The way we saw it, styptic pencils worked great but had three big flaws: After several uses they began to deteriorate and get disgusting, they left a chalky residue and they stung like heck!. The Nick Stick acts in exactly the same way as the styptic pencil, but is a liquid roll-on (with a cap!) and dries clear. It also has some vitamin A & E to promote healing and Aloe to soothe skin. Hope that helps.

How can you tell if you have enough oil to shave with? It looks like it's just clear ... and doesn't foam at all right? And would I have to use lots more to shave my legs with it? Love the idea and would love nothing better to get rid of those nasty cans of shaving cream that leave rust rings all over my shower!

Two things. First, I've been looking for a styptic pencil for weeks. Since no pharmacy I went into between here and Boston carried them, I figured the Massachusetts had made them illegal or something! (Like mecuricrome; But I've still got a bottle of that hidden away at the cottage in Maine!) So Stan I just ordered two of your sets, just to get the Nick Sticks; the shaving oil will be a bonus.

Second, this is my second order of the day on Grommet (bought one of those fish mobiles this morning, for said Maine cottage) and I was amazed at how streamlined Grommet's check out process has become!! I went from "thinking about ordering" to "confirmed order" in less than 45 seconds. Not good for controlling impulse buying! I just hope that tomorrow's grommet is something I have no need for!

Unquestionably the BEST shaving product I have ever used. I received my first batch of oil almost four years ago, and have never looked back. I'm a shower shaver and the comfort of this shave is unmatched. Do yourself a favor and try this product- it's amazing (and cost-effective)!

This is one of the best products I've ever used. I had given up on blade shaving with my tender skill and increased age. Just 8+ drops and my shave is close and smooth. In preparation just hold a warm or hot wet washcloth to your face. This product is wonderful and I've given it to my two boys.

@David - that's exactly what I'm looking for. So, my son just started shaving and is blowing through the shaving cream. Is this a good idea for a beginner Stan or should I have him combine the 2 at first to wean him off the cream. (I want it for myself too - looks like it'll take up lots less space for business trips).

This is so funny! Look at all the men commenting. I'm more into this for myself - I think shaving cream dries my legs out, and I just end up using soap. I like what you said to Amy about the essential oils. Maybe I'll share with my husband - we'll see.

  • Stan
    Stan – Special Guest
    4/14/2009 9:35 PM

Hi Amy! Good question - and one we get a lot. Unfortunately, there's no easy answer, other than to say, less than you probably think. The essential oils really cover a lot of space and once you have it on your skin and running your hand over it, you'll be able to feel how slick it actually is. (btw, unlike foams/gels, water actually helps, making shaving in the bath/shower much easier). Here's what happens with all our customers though. The first few times they use it, they don't quite trust the lubrication, so you end up using more than you need (we're only talking drops here, but still). Over time, you'll find you need to use less until you find the right amount that's perfect for you. One more thing: the essential oils want to moisturize before they do anything. So, if your skin is dry or you're in a dry climate, you'll find you need to use some extra drops the first few times until your skin is more moisturized. After that, you'll be set. I shave my face and use between 6-15 drops, depending on the day. At that rate, the bottle usually lasts about four months for me. Does that help?

Hi Jeff. You could certainly use the oil as a pre-shave underneath the cream for an added layer of protection, but I would go straight to the oil. Here's why: your son will be able to *see* where he's shaving ; he can get his sideburns even, easily avoid any blemishes and jaw/chin areas that are prone to nicks. The nice thing about the oil is that he can just run his hand over his skin to feel for stubble he may have missed.

Hi Anne. You'll love having the shaving oil in your toiletry kit for travel. The nice thing is that it really is 'trial' size, but it packs the punch of a full can of shaving cream - and then some! (TSA-friendly size means you can carry it on, too!). btw, I have found myself in the same spot as you and agree - hotel conditioner is not ideal. But if you're truly stuck, it's about the best alternative option. (a little McGyver moment for everyone!)

I have ordered quite a few Grommets from Daily Grommet, and I have yet to be disappointed. However, two stand out as "Wows" for me. The first was the set of silicon measuring cups, which you featured. I use them almost every day--they are simply much better than my old Pryex ones which are gathering dust http://www.dailygrommet.com/products/16-iSi-Flex-It-Measuring-Cup-Set.

The second "Wow" is this shaving oil. I was skeptical but decided to order it based on the very strong customer testimonials. Even so, I remained a skeptic till I used it (a much better shave!) and even until the day after (no irritation).

Kudos to your team for consistently finding cool and useful items--and especially those that "Wow".

Update: I tried the oil and was surprised at the results--compared to shaving cream it feels like you have nothing on your legs, yet the shave is smoother and longer-lasting. The next time I used both the oil and shaving cream (old habits...) and have never had a closer shave. Now I will keep a bottle in my travel kit AND in the shower. The Pacific Oil and the DERMAdoctor Body Scrub (January 16) are two Grommets that have permanently changed my daily routine. Thanks!

On the day it was featured by Daily Grommet I bought two of these -- one for home; one for my travel kit -- more for the nick stick than anything else. (I'd been looking for a styptic pencil for weeks and could not find one. Have the become illegal, like mercurochrome?) Someone else in my home (who shall remain nameless) tried the 'shaving cream' and they liked it so much I've not seen it since. But the nick stick stayed in its package in my bath. Just last week, I noticed the unopened nick stick and realized how long it had been since I'd nicked myself shaving. Well the very next day, I gouged myself (not just a nick) while shaving. Ripped open the nick stick and I was amazed that it worked on such a deep cut. It did sting -- I guess it was working so hard. This really is a great product.

I was searching for an organic shaving oil and stumbled upon Pacific Shaving Company's All Natural Shaving Oil. I have tried many products for shaving, but the All Natural Shaving Oil is the best product I have ever used! Not only do I use it on my face, I also shave my head with it.

The only thing bad about the shaving oil is that I have only been able to find it at one location. Not to mention, the location only stocks a small amount and runs out frequently.

I can't say enough about Pacific Shaving Company's All Natual Shaving Oil.

@CV - Thanks for adding that. It's always one of the first questions I get. And people are always skeptical when I say 6-8 drops. In truth, it depends on a few things, including coarseness of your hair, length between shaves and even climate (dry winter months may mean slightly more drops). But if you're shaving almost every day, one will find that they end up right about where you said.

@Mike: Yes, those who suffer from ingrowns (myself included) know what a bear they can be. The shaving oil does help. It keeps the hair follicle moisturized/supple so it can grow out of the skin immediately after the shave. If the follicle is dry (and at a microscopic level, sharp from the blade cut), it's got more of an opportunity to curl back around and grow down/sideways. Of course - only shave with the grain too. Sounds like you've already got this figured out though! Thanks for adding to the discussion. Quick question: how many blades do you use on your razor?

I have used this oil for 6 years, before that I wore a beard for 30 years, hated shaving blade or electric. When I turned 50 my wife told me I would look younger if I lost the beard with all the gray, so in a rare moment of vanity off came the beard. And for 3 months I suffered with nicks and the shaving rash on my neck then my brother told me about Pacific Shaving Company and its shaving oil. Truly an excellent product, have never had a nick and no more rashes. Glad to see you have developed a new way to apply the oil. The old way made the pads on three and four blade razors swell, going to give it try. I rarely endorse a product I do not represent but Pacific Shaving Oil is truly a top shelf product.

Hey, Stan! Just wanted to check in and say that I'm in my fourth year of happily using the Pacific Shave Oil product. I use it as my stand-alone daily shave prep. Although it does take a bit of a leap of faith at first -- the most efficacious use of PSO is achieved by using it "instead of," rather than "in addition to" -- other shaving creams, preps, lathers, etc. By using it alone, razor burn becomes a thing of the past! I may have to segue to an electric razor soon, and I expect PSO will be good for that mode of shaving as well?! Keep up the good work!

@Ina: Thanks for chiming in - and glad to have some ladies join the discussion! (Believe it or not, almost a third of our customers are women.)

@Keith: Thanks for taking that initial leap of faith four years ago and glad to hear it continues to live up to your expectations. Hoping your words (and those of everyone else on this board) will inspire others to become first-timers/long-timers too.

My husband used to shave only every couple of days. His face would get red and irritated no matter what shave cream or blade he used. An electric shaver would do an okay job for a month or so, but the price made it ridiculous to maintain. I ordered your oil and he LOVES it. He can shave every day and his skin is clear and smooth. No more razor burn when he kisses me! I LOVE it too!!

    Stan,

I am enjoying using the shaving oil. Still have a little more before I order more. Good luck!

Great products, used 'em since I first bought through Grommet maybe a year ago, perfect for travel too since the size complies with airport restrictions. Definitely recommend it!

@Bebe - We talk about our products as being: "Good for the skin. Good for the wallet. Good for the earth." Maybe we should add: "Good for kissing" Congratulate your husband for me on marrying such a smart woman.

@Jeff C: Glad to hear Daily Grommet brought you to us. How long do you think your first purchase has lasted you?

Based on the comment of Ann above, I now used the oil under shaving cream. The result is amazing. The closest, longest-lasting shave. And baby-soft skin. The 2 oz bottle is lasting forever.

@DJP - thanks for your great follow-up comments. Glad to hear you're enjoying the shaving oil, of course. How has the Nick Stick worked out for you (or do you no longer have a need for it)?

@Stan, the Nick Stick has been tremendous. I bought the original Grommet for the stick and not the oil. (I had not been able to find anything like this for years.) I do not need to use it often, but when I do the stick is a miracle. Both the stick and the oil are in my "Top Ten Grommets" list.

@DJP. I have a hard time narrowing down to my Top *100* Grommets so I am honored to have Pacific Shaving make your Top 10 list. Happy shaving!
