GoToob

Travel Tubes

Totally Toobular

Traveling with liquids can be messy. It’s an extra hassle when you’re going through airport security, and it’s a recipe for disaster when a bottle of shampoo opens in your gym bag. Lucky for us, humangear is on the case.

Product designer Chris Miksovsky founded humangear with a goal of creating responsible products that make life better. When he gave conventional travel-sized bottles a makeover, he focused on usability and smarts. The result is GoToob. It’s made from silicone, which makes it easy to squeeze out every
last drop of your toiletries. One really clever feature is a window in the tube’s collar that you can rotate to identify what’s inside — such as shampoo, conditioner, soap or lotion. And there’s a suction cup on the 2 oz size GoToob so you can temporarily attach it to a shower stall, for instance, if you need hands-free dispensing.

GoToobs are approved for airplane carry-ons, safe for food, and BPA-free. Besides being functional, GoToobs look chic with their smooth profile and lovely, opaque hues. They’re an important addition to the toiletry bag or carry-on luggage. Plus, you won’t have to worry about mystery contents in unmarked bottles anymore.

I’m very glad to have the GoToob featured as today’s Grommet. We spent a long time designing our GoToob to be the civilized, smart and squeezable travel tube for traveling, outdoors, and more. At humangear, we spend a lot of time with people - listening to their feedback, watching them use products, trying to understand their needs and getting a deep appreciation for the experience at hand. We also spend a lot of time getting our hands dirty. We think if a picture is worth a thousand words, a prototype is worth many thousand pictures. humangear is passionate about creating remarkable and responsible products that, at least in some small way, make the world a better place. Thanks for your interest in our GoToob!

There is something almost addicting about holding and squeezing the Toobs. They just feel so good in your hands. The GoToobs definitely take your carry-on toiletries up a notch in both sophistication and functionality. Thanks Chris!

Wendy: Thanks. We agree - the feel of the silicone is really great.

The video asks what else we're working on. Well, we're finalizing a new line of hard containers to go along with the soft tubes. Like GoToob, the new hard tubs have a couple clever features that we think humans will appreciate. They should be out later this summer and we're calling them "GoTubbs".

There is a lot of buzz about plastic type products, such as yours, leaching chemicals into whatever is in the container and therefore "into" the consumer. Soft plastic products are being warned against in particular. I am aware your product is silicone (rubber?), but don't know if that makes a difference. What are your thoughts on this?

Joe, thanks for your question. Yes, we are well aware of the concerns around leaching plastics. Our first product was a better cap for hard plastic water bottles (called the "capCAP" viewable at humangear.com) There have been concerns around the plastics in hard water bottles for years, so we began to get familiar with the issues some years ago developing that cap, and selected materials that were 100% BPA-free and PC-free. We chose silicone for our GoToob because it is one of the safest commercial elastomers known to exist (aside from being great to touch, and beautiful). Silicone is widely used in medical devices (impants, etc.) as well as highly safety-conscious applications like baby bottle nipples. We have had our GoToob tested by one of the largest independent testing labs in the US and it passed all food-safe certification and leaching tests with flying colors. Our flip cap is made of food-grade #5PP plastic which is arguably the safest "hard" plastic out there - to our knowledge there have been no reports of any concerns or issues with leaching from #5PP. The valve in the cap is silicone for the same reasons as the tube is. So, in short, material safety is something we are actively monitoring and factoring into our product design. Thanks again for the question.

Chris - thanks for that explanation. I absolutely love it when a designer/inventor looks at something that we've had in our homes for decades and says "I can do that better" and executes it as well as you have. Kudos to you and all of the people supporting you!

Thanks, Katherine. We took inspiration from a lot of different sources for the GoToob - turkey basters, bathtub squeeze toys, baby bottles, drink bottles, inverted ketchup bottles, bath mats (suction cups - sometimes the best ideas come to one in the shower!), mechanical pencils (since grade school I've loved that you could mark the type of lead on nicer mechanical pencils with a rotatable ID ring) and, of course, existing travel bottles and transport containers. It's always nice to have the design process appreciated by others.

If you're not sure whether to go for the 2oz or 3oz, and only want to buy one size, I would go for the 2oz. It would cover a trip up to about 5-7 days and is compact. If you are someone who uses higher volumes of shampoo, needs a two week supply, or just want to be absolutely sure you won't run out in a week--go for the 3oz.

What can you tell me about the caps on the GoToobs? I generally look for screw caps because I have had problems with flip tops coming open in my luggage from jostling, luggage handling, etc. Are your flip tops really secure?

  • Katherine

@Lin - These caps have a very satisfying click when they have fully closed. Additionally, there's an interior drip free valve to keep the contents from escaping until you squeeze the toob. You are going to love these toobs!

You should list the 3 oz go toobs in your ordering incormation. All that is there is the 2 oz and 1.25 oz. I want the 3 oz, as i am travelling for extended periods this summer.

@Ann - The GoToob's have been very popular and are on backorder. We hope to have them back in stock within a few weeks. For shorter trips (up to a week) the 2 oz are a nice size for travel.

I love them and plan to order more!! My only issue is that I find the labels impossible to read as they are the same color as the tube. I don't want to carry a list with me of what product is in each color and size tube. Any suggestions?

  • Katherine

    4/23/10 7:07 PM

@Joan - I just tried this on my own GoToob to make sure it works and it does! I took a very sharp permanent marker and went over the embossed names on the GoToob. You can easily take that white collar off and put it on again to give you easy access to those embossed names. It's so clever how they added that feature it would be a shame to not be able to use it.

    I love my GoToobs, too!

I bought these not only for travel but to keep in my gym bag. I have the 3oz ones and they are perfect because they don't leak and they hold enough where I only have to refill them 2x a month.

  • Katherine

    5/11/10 10:01 AM

@Karen - that's what I did as well. The refillable bottles I was using prior to the GoToob were ones that you couldn't squeeze, so if it was less than half full, I'd be banging it on my hand in the shower coaxing a drop of shampoo out. These GoToob squeezable bottles are wonderful!

I got the 2 oz. GoToobs first, and I just ordered the 2 other sizes; they're THAT great! The fact that they're safe silicon was very important to me, but who could have guessed how 'friendly' they'd feel? I have some fabulous bubble-gum-scented bath & shower gel in my pink one, and I have noticed that the aroma totally permeated through the silicon and scented my whole travel bag. I personally love this, as my travel bags could always use a bit of 'freshening up', but it is something to consider, perhaps. I'll never again willingly be without these, they're absolutely the best on the market.

@YellerKitty - Wow! Thank you for stopping back and letting us know your experience with your GoToobs. That is good for everyone to know about the scent permeating through. I hadn't noticed that with mine, but I have lightly scented products in mine. We're glad that you love them!

I travel a ton and this will work perfect. My question is dimensions on the 2oz versus the 3oz. In addition to limiting individual sizes, the TSA also makes them fit in a 1 quart plastic bag. I want to make sure I can still fit travel size shaving cream and hair putty in with 3 gotoobs. Also, how does this handle thicker items like toothpaste?

  • AJM
    AJM
    2/16/11 1:35 PM

@Brian: It might be a challenge to fit three 3 oz Go Toobs in the quart size ziplock bag with anything else. I am able to fit two of the 3 oz Go Toobs in a quart size ziplock along with a few other items. Also, I use one of my Go Toobs for a face scrub product that is quite thick. Not as thick as toothpaste, but pretty close. It works very well. I highly recommend these. If you look at any travel forums, the Go Toobs get very high ratings from frequent travelers.

Hi, everyone. Great to be featured here on Daily Grommet again!

Lynn: We are actively at work on some new products. We have just launched a new hard container called the GoTubb that brings some nice innovation to the hard container realm. Please check out our website in the near future for more information on those. Other great stuff is in the works, too. We do have a mailing list on our site if you'd like to be informed of new products when they come out (http://www.humangear.com/mailinglist.html)

    Doris:

The GoToob is proudly designed in the San Francisco, CA, and proudly made in China.

I see "no drip valve" mentioned, but what I want to know is if the cap is secure even under the changes in air pressure that happen with air travel? It's no fun to get to the other side of the country or the world only to find that your shampoo has worked its way out of its container into your 1-quart ziploc bag!

It's hard to know exactly what the difference is in the style you saw or why your retailer may price something as they do but I did do a quick search and it appears that our pricing is in line.
