Acupressure Mat

A Modern Spin on Ancient Stress Relief

The ancient Chinese practice of acupressure goes back thousands of years, so stimulating points on the body to improve circulation and promote the release of endorphins is hardly a new idea. But most people aren’t keen to use the original home acupressure method — a bed of nails!

Acupressure mats offer the perfect modern solution to at-home health and relaxation. They’re portable, comfortable and affordable, and with the even
distribution of “spike flowers,” there’s plenty of stimulation without discomfort. The Yantra Mat is the most popular model in Europe, because it has the most “spikes” available (210 flowers with 42 points apiece). Kristina Fine, a Swede living on Cape Cod, loved the Yantra Mat she received as a gift so much, she bought the U.S. distribution rights and launched the business to bring these mats to a broader American audience.

We heard about it from Carol O’Loughlin, who runs a real estate business and tried the acupressure mat to alleviate stress pains brought on by challenging economic times and flareups from old athletic injuries. “Brief sessions with the Yantra Mat brought immediate health benefits,” Carols says. “It puts me in a relaxed state, reduces my stress, relieves my pains and increases my circulation.”

Yantra Mats are 100% cotton, with non-toxic ABS plastic spikes. Simply lie on the mat on your back to stimulate the spine and relieve back/neck pain, or on your stomach to promote better digestive and respiratory health. The longer you use the mat, the more endorphins will be released, and you’ll feel calm and uplifted as your circulation improves.

    Kristina

I’m Kristina Fine, co-founder of Yantra Mat USA and we’re so excited to see our mat featured as today’s Grommet! The Yantra Mat is not only just for yoga or acupressure enthusiasts—anyone can use the mat. It’s great for relieving stress, anxiety, back pain, headaches, insomnia, fatigue and much more. If you have any such ailments and you don’t have time (or money!) for weekly massage or acupuncture treatments, this is a really nice do-it-yourself alternative that can be done in the comfort of your own home. It’s been an interesting journey, launching this European product in the United States this year. I’d love to talk to any of you who have questions about how exactly this product works or if it might be able to help you personally. And because I know you’ll ask, yes – these spikes are sharp! Take a look and write me a note here if you have any questions! Thanks for tuning in!

@Katherine - Daily Grommet Community Team: I'd like to get 3 mats for my family for Christmas but not sure if the medium is OK for tall/wide men? (my husband's shoulder span is 18"). Also, is the objective to get as much of the body on the mat as possible (i.e. shoulders and gluts?) and if so, does that mean longer is better? (dad and brother are almost 6ft). Thanks very much!

You list the sizes and pressure points. I would suggest listing whic mat is appropriate to body size or need that is using it. The only thing this tells me ( and I am sold on it) is the size. All I know it is product wanted to try at first glance, and all I want is the info in one place.

I hve brain injuries and I want inf not self praise etc.

The video demonstrates rolling the mat up to put under your neck. I have inflammation that is generally at the base of my skull and usually have travels up my head. Would this be something I could lay my head on? This looks like something that would bring me a great deal of relief.

@Erin: Check out a (sort of) chiropractic treatment called Atlas Profilax - only performed by certain practitioners trained in Switzerland. This treatment permanently corrects position of the Atlas bone at the base of your skull. My daughter and two grandsons just had this procedure done in Kansas.

    therefore help the inflammation.

When I start to feel tense, I lay on the mat either on my recliner or in bed. I have sensitive skin, so do wear a T-shirt. I'm amazed at the positive difference it has made for me.

You will get an instruction booklet with the Mat recommending the time.

I have slept several hours at a time on it. I don't think that you could be comfortable all night! - You will get marks on your body but

    they dissipate very quickly.

There is immediate discomfort but it quickly gives away to intense heat

@pam, the spikes are sharp, and you'll feel more of an "ouch" than an injury if you press one with a fingertip. But when you lay your whole body down on a Yantra Mat, it's just somewhat uncomfortable at first and then it becomes quite relaxing.

if a person has sensory differences (ie: greater sensitivity to touch), will this be continuously painful? or do you think it will work the same as for regular people? could one just wear thicker clothes so it didn't hurt, or would that make it not work?

  • Kristina
    Kristina – Special Guest
    8/12/10 9:48 AM

If you have a greater sensitivity to touch you should start out wearing a thicker t shirt. Eventually I think that your body will get used to the discomfort and you will be able to relax and enjoy all the benefits.

Work on getting used to a thinner shirt as you spend a little more time on the mat. Good Luck

How do you determine which size is best for you?

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team
    11/12/10 4:18 PM

@Linda Wilson: A medium is going to fit most people and fit everyone in our office. But if you consider yourself a large/extra-large person, order those sizes accordingly. To be more precise, here are the dimensions of the mat:

    Medium: 30 x 17 in, (Pressure point surface: 25 x 15 in)

    Large: 31 x 20 in, (Pressure point surface: 28 x 18 in

    X-Large: 35 x 23 in, (Pressure point surface: 30 x 21 in)

When laying on the mat you want the pressure points to be in contact with your skin and with the medium you will have 15 inches across of pressure points. I hope this helps!

Jason from the company also offers this suggestion: "Another thing to consider is actual usage. If you will be travelling with the mat - the medium size has a travelling case. If you are using the mat solely in the home and are wanting to treat the neck and at the same time tight glutes, then the large to extra large is a great option."

I'm convinced your product would work for my fibro. and my adult daughters severe back pain. However the cost for two is holding me back. (also i couldn't get a shipping cost which is a very important factor) I would need a lg and my daughter an xlg. Can you tell me what the shipping (normal not rushed or express) is for one and also for two (in case I can't afford two I will just get my daughter one) would be and if you have any holiday sales.

@kathleen: Another commenter posted saying that it did help her fibromyalgia, so there's a good chance this will make you feel better as well! I know it's not convenient, but you can always check the shipping price of something by going through the motions of ordering it. You can always stop the order process at the point you choose the shipping method if it is not reasonable. I will contact you directly with this information. Thank you, I truly hope this helps lessen the pain for you and your daughter.

Love the mat; hated the service. Mat ordered May 23 and did not receive for 22 days. Contacted Daily Grommet two to three times about this. Seems that someone at Yantra Mat forgot to enter the order. After being informed of this, they said they would ship courier at their expense. Still took four more days to get it after being told this. Credit card was charged on the first day of my order. Need more control over shipping department.

@Frank Dardzinski: We have heard from some migraine sufferers that it has helped them with their pain. However, it is one of those things that you won't really know if it works for any particular person and situation until you try it. We have a 30 day return period, so if it's not working for her you should definitely return it.

Does anyone know if you can use this if you have had an anterior cervical discectomy with bone fusion and plate and pins? Had to roll over and slide out of bed.

A big drawback to this mat is that it is made of cheap Chinese FOAM that attracts and traps allergens. It can't be fully cleaned. It is not firm so the spikes are really sharp. A natural/organic alternative using coconut fibers in place of foam providing firmness for the flower acupressure points *would be a good alternative.
