Babycakes

Mini Cupcake Maker

3, 2, 1… cupcakes!

Gobs of gourmet bakeries have elevated the cupcake from humble dessert to designer confection. But despite all the attention, cupcakes haven’t really changed that much. They’re still a perfectly portioned comfort food that delights young and old.

If you like experimenting with cupcakery at home, we’ve found an appliance that makes it fast and easy. The Babycakes cupcake maker can bake eight mini cupcakes in eight minutes or less. It’s powered by 1400 watts that heat the nonstick baking plates, similar to a waffle
maker.

If you get a hankering for cupcakes on a hot summer day, you can bake without turning on the oven. Baking with kids is easy, too, since there’s no hot oven involved. Beyond cupcakes, the Babycakes appliance is great for baking mini muffins, scones, quiches, brownies, and other snack-sized goodies. It comes with a recipe book, decorating tips, piping bag, pastry cutting and crust forming tools, and it’s available in two frosting-inspired hues (pink or yellow).

Who doesn’t love a great cupcake? When it’s fast and easy to bake at home, it tastes even sweeter.

@Katherine Klinger: I know the instructions say not to pre-heat, but we've found that it never sticks if you pre-heat -- and I do not use cooking spray. I keep mine on the kitchen table -- dinner time -- take bisquik - use the bisquit recipe --add some herbs and presto! Herb bisquits hot and at the table while they're still filling their plates.

Also -- breakfast time -- take 1 egg, scramble it with a little milk -- and split it between two cupcake cups -I did spray with Pam for the eggs - leave it in for 5 minutes for fluffy scrambled egg muffins the kids (and grownups love -- I did pancakes in some and eggs in others - only used the stove for the bacon!

Hello Eric, this product seems awesome. I have a proposal for you. My daughters host a video web cooking show, Kids Can Cook. You can check them out at www.kids-cancook.com. I think this item would be terrific for them to use and because the cupcakes bake in only 8 minutes and are miniature, makes it even more appealing. So, might you be interested in allowing the girls to use and promote this item on their show and of course our website?

Michelle - great questions. For blueberry muffins, you can bake them in BABYCAKES in 7 to 8 minutes. We also include a recipe for Almond Poppy Seed muffins that takes between 6 and 9 minutes. You can actually start your first batch of cupcakes, etc without preheating. After about 5 minutes, the green READY light will come on which is a good time to test the cupcakes. Of course after BABYCAKES is heated up the 2nd and 3rd batches will be a little faster (and just as tasty).

I am curious about the recipes. Do you have to mix up an entire box of cake mix at one time? Because I am buying one for my daughter the chocoholic just so she can make small batches of cupcakes instead of 24 at a time.

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team
    12/3/10 1:12 PM

@Kim: You can make just a half of a box of cake mix. Seal the remaining mix in a plastic food bag and place back in the box. Half of an 18.25 oz box will make 22-24 cupcakes. It's a great strategy to make those cake boxes last longer!

Fantastic product and looks easy to store. Question? Does it use paper liners and if so can they be purchased locally at grocery store?

  • Eric
    Eric – Special Guest
    8/31/10 4:04 PM

Thanks for the question about the paper liners. It is actually possible to bake directly in the non-stick reservoirs of BABYCAKES. Removing the cupcakes and cleaning the product is even easier with paper liners. Most grocery stores and general retail chains sell a regular size cupcake liner and a "mini" cupcake liner. The mini paper liners work fine, although they are a little smaller than the BABYCAKES reservoirs. There are also baking supply stores online that sell many different sizes. We have found that the ideal size is a 1 5/8" diameter paper cup (this is the diameter of the flat bottom of the paper cup).

This is a totally irrelevant comment to the use of Babycakes...but Patti and I both had the same reaction to the moment in the video when Claire our intern appears (about 80% through the video). • Katherine

    4/26/11 12:10 PM

@Dixie : Dan has graciously forwarded the recipe and these instructions for getting the best results:

It is essential to use the highest-quality ingredients,

particularly cocoa, e.g. Scharffenberger if you can

find it, but in any case this is important.

The butter must be highest-quality unsalted butter.

    Don't even think about margarine.

Take it out after 25 mins even if it looks underdone.

It's not, and it'll be moister.

If it's for kids, leave out the walnuts unless

you're sure they like them. Most kids don't.

The recipe is from "The Gift-Giver's Cookbook"

by Jane Green and Judith Choate

@Janine: Hi Janie, I am sorry you had issues with the mini corn dogs. I do spray my machine with non-stick cooking spray. It does make stuff come out much easier. I also have a silicone/nylon mini spatula I use to get things out of my machine. Try using the non-stick spray and make sure you pour in the cornbread mix first then put the hot dog in the middle. I hope this helps. (Note make sure all kitchen items you use are nylon or silicone – just make sure your items will not scratch the machine)

I add salt and pepper to taste. I get the pie crust and roll it out. I cut my top and bottom halves. After putting the bottom half in the machine I add the chicken mixture and top with the pie crust. Mix this and well and make roll into small balls the size of a large green grape. I then flaten them and put one in the bottom of well. I mix One 8oz package of cream cheese One 15oz can of pumpkin, 3 eggs, 1 teaspoon vanilla, one stick melted butter, one 16oz powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1 teaspoon nutmeg. Mix well pour this over the top of the cake crust. Cook for 10 min. or until toothpick test comes out clean. My office and family loved these.

I am the only person in my family who eats snickerdoodle cookies. I make stuff for my family all the time and by the time I get to eat one they are gone so.... These cookies I knew would be just for me. LOL I took a small baby size spoon amount and put it in each slot. I let them bake for 6 min and cheked them every two min. Sprinkle Sensation

pre-heat cupcake maker and (if you have any i recommend you use it) smear some vegetable shortening on the cups inside the maker. Then put your cupcake batter in along with some sprinkles and wait about 10 minutes. After your cupcakes will look somewhat like there was sprinkles on the top that were like exploded somewhat.

Garlic Rolls - 1 can of French Bread. Cut them tube of dough into 1/2 inch pieces. Then cut them in half again. Mix 1 large garlic clove, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 cup of olive oil. Press the garlic and mash with the salt to form a paste like. Then add the oil and mix. I then add parcely for color. Put the dough in each well. Brush oil mixture on top and bake for 10 min. Brush with oil again and cook 2 min.

I'm going to buy this for my 12-year-old niece for Christmas. She loves to bake and decorate cakes but can only use the oven with supervision. I think she will be thrilled with the Babycakes cupcake maker because she will be able to use it on her own. Can't wait to see (and taste) her creations! And when I mentioned this to other relatives, a couple mentioned they would like one. Babycakes for everyone this holiday season? I know I want one!

My daughter received this cupcake maker as a gift and we were going to make some cupcakes tonight for Thanksgiving. After opening the box, which was sealed, I found that the directions and recipe cards? are not there. Can I find this online or is it simply just plug in and use any cake batter?

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team
    11/24/10 4:55 PM

@Serena : I know that the makers I ordered through Daily Grommet came with their instruction manuals, but it seems there may have been a group sent to a store somewhere that were missing theirs. Yes you can plug in and use any cake batter. 5-8 minutes for cupcakes, test for doneness with a toothpick. Read through all of Juli's recipes on this board and you will be inspired to try just about anything! Please come back and share with us any recipes you create!!

@Debbie: Here are the cleaning instructions: Always unplug the appliance from the power source and wait until it cools down before cleaning. There is no need to take the appliance apart for cleaning. Dry with a paper towel to absorb excess oils. Brush crumbs from the grooves and wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap. Never immerse in water. Avoid using sharp utensils as they will scratch the surfaces. Do not use cleansers or oven cleaners on the cooking plates. To clean the handles and exterior, use a damp cloth with mild soap and towel dry.

Calzones!!!!!!!!!!!! Packaged pizza dough rolled out very thin. Cut with small side of pie cutter, place in each well, add ricotta cheese, mozarella cheese, top with crust. Cook for 10 min. I served with sauce. Now you could put anything inside the calzones, ham, sausage veggies. So many things. They were wonderful!!! Yes they look like muffins but there really is cheese inside!

this is the funest machine in my kitchen now that I recieved it for Christmas. I have already made tarts, pies, monkey bread in it. I wanted to pass on a tip I learned real quickly. When using gooey items like sugars and fruit topped tarts, once the items are baked there is a gooey mess left on the machine. I let it cool then wiped with a rag but still found it hard to get it all off, so I turned the machine back on and pressed plain bread into the machine and let it cook and it took most the gooey mess off. Made clean up much easier.

    hi-

just rcd the babycakes CC maker for xmas. we opened up the box this am and tried out the after skool applesc CC recipe.

per the instruxns, i chckd the CCs after 3 - 5 minutes, when th e green lite came on. at least 1/2 of the cc tops have stuck to the top of the maker. now, there is almost as much sugar in this recipe as flour, so perhaps it's to be expected...but is this going to happen all the time? did i chk too early?

i have 1/2 the batter left and am reluctant to put in in the maker b4 it cools down and i can clean it (the CCs also stuck/left some debris in the bottom cups, as well.

maybe paper liners are the way to go?

@m: Hi M! I spray the top of the machine as well as the bottom of the machine with non-stick cooking spray. All items you make in the maker will expand. I leave a little space and never fill to the top. Also I do not check any item before 4 min. I have never paid attention to the green light on the top. I just judge things on my own. When your cupcape stuck to the top and you closed your machine the cupcake should have gone back into the well. I hope this helps some and after a few tries I am sure you will love it. I tossed a few things when I first started using my machine. It does take time to get used to it. Again Good Luck and Happy Cooking! - Juli

another cleaning tip: i took damp/moist paper towels and let them sit in the wells while the machine is WARM (NOT on, NOT smoking hot). i pressed them in the well with the pie tool and let them sit - the damp heat loosened some really cooked on sugar from the muffins.

ps: evidently the mangled batch of applesc muffins are a hit. kids are zeroing in on 3rd and 4th helpings.

My mom gave us the Babycakes Maker for Christmas. We used it for the 1st time today and it was a lot of fun. My 5 year old really enjoyed this product. This was purchased in lieu of an Easy Bake Oven and I am pleased with it and can't wait to try some of the recipes I have seen posted.

Cinnamon Rolls – with Pecans!Take your pre-packaged cinnamon rolls and cut into pieces. I then rolled the pieces in crushed pecans. Mash a few of the pieces together and put into each well. Cook for 7 to 8 minutes. The pre-packaged cinnamon rolls come with iceing. I then iced each bun.

I got the Baby Cakes for Christmas. Actually I got 2 but returned one, I guess that my friends no me and my fondness for cupcakes. :) Anyway I tried it tonight using the pie crust. I just wanted to make the shell (1 pie crust) to fill with the chocolate cream per the recipe book. I used the Pillsbury ready made pie crust that comes in the red rectangular box. I used the pie tool to make the well but when they baked there was no weight in them and they shrunk and either had no well at all like a disk or a small well. Has anyone else tried to do just the pie crust shell in the Babycakes? Any tips on what I did wrong? I followed the instruction book but was disappointed. I have pictures but don't know how to add to this.

@Robbie: Hi Robbie. I wish I could answer you but I have not made just pie shells. I have always put something in them when baking. I hope someone can help you with this. When it works for you please be sure to let us know and also all the wonderful things you are making. Good Luck.

    @Robbie: Hi!!

I totally understand what you mean about the pie crust.

When I first made pie crust with out filling that happened to me too.

But then again that happens anytime you cook pie crust with out a filling even in an oven.

You need to use pie weights to weigh the dough down so it doesnt puff up or shrink down on the sides.

Look online to read more about these. I know you can also use beans. I've haven't tried these though.

When I make a crust in the Babycakes I just watch it closely and continually press the puffy dough down until the crust are done.

It works better than not doing anything. I too have to invest in some pie weights!!

    I hope this helps!!

Also follow my blog for great snacks I create with my Babycakes cupcake maker!!

BeanieOhooos! Today I made what I am calling BeanieOhooos! I took a tortia shell and cut it with the pie cutter and placed in each well. I added a spoonfull of refried beans in to each shell. I then toped with cheese. Closed the machine and let bake for 8 minutes. I then put salsa and sourcream on top.

@Juli Rowland: The salsa on these I also make this myself. It is very easy and takes only a minute to make. Take 1 can of crushed tomatoes, add 2 tablespoons of jalapienos, ¼ teaspoon garlic powder, ¼ teaspoon salt, cilantro and ½ of a chopped onion. Mix well and place in the refridgerator.

Garlic Crecent Rolls: tonight I tried something a little different. I opened a can of crecent rolls and cut them in half length wise. In a small bowl I put parmesan cheese, basal, and garlic powder and mixed it well. I then placed a thin strip in the middle of each crecent. I kind of pressed the mixture into the roll but not to hard as to flatten the roll. Next I rolled up the crecent and placed in my machine. I then baked them for 12 minutes. They turned out GREAT! It was a wonderful addition to my spaghetti we had for dinner.

Hi Aditra! The cinnamon rolls are just cut in half. Also you can wrap the left over unbaked ones in a ziplock bag. This way you can make only the amount you will eat and not waste any. I do have a blog page, but I post all my items here on this page as well. The only thing different on my blog page is pictures. I do post the pictures of the food. :) Thank you for asking.

I purchased the Babycakes cupcake maker and can't stop trying new recipes. I have to bake gluten free so was worried about the outcome but have made 2 different recipes from scratch and they both turned out good. The first batch took 6.5 minutes but he second batch was only 5 minutes! This is so much fun and living in Glendale Arizona it is so much better to cook on the counter instead of heating up the kitchen with the oven on in the summer! Also, I'm a senior citizen and avoid bending over to place baking in the oven. I love this product.

Try using a cooking spray in the liners before you add the batter.

My daughter has another make that she got for a christmas present last year but it doesn't hava a dome on the top of the cupcakes. I have used it everyday since I purchased it. Now everyone in my family is getting one for Christmas. I am happy it comes in three different colors. I live in Canada and have had this machine since Christmas 2011. I use medium cupcake papers in my machine, that I get from my local bulk foods store. I find they work better then the mini ones and cost less for the quantity.

I also prefill the papers and line them up on the table before I put them in the machine, which for me at least, is WAY easier.

As well, I bought silicone tongs which help in getting the cakes out.
