ila Security

Personal Alarms

Personal Panic Button

It’s not uncommon to feel vulnerable when you’re walking alone at night, heading for your car in a parking garage, or traveling in an unfamiliar city. Today’s Grommet can’t promise invincibility, but it can provide another line of defense if you feel threatened.

We’re featuring three personal alarms from ila Security that are designed to shock and disorient potential attackers and draw attention to dangerous situations. Simon McGivern, James Phillips, and Neil Munn set out to design alarms that are easy to carry, so
we’re more likely to take one along. These three founders of ila Security were inspired by their wives and daughters to create safety devices that are small, appealing, and easy to integrate into everyday life.

Named after the Hindu goddess of speech, the Dusk alarm emits an extremely loud female scream when it’s activated. The super-small ila Pebble sounds a piercing 130-decibel alarm when it’s activated. Both can attach to a key chain or clip onto a handbag for easy access. For dorm rooms, apartments and hotel rooms, the ila Wedge sits in front of a closed door and sets off a 130-decibel alarm if the door is opened, even just a crack.

In the event of an attack, the last thing you want is to lose your voice. But in a panicked state, the adrenalin surge can render a person speechless. A personal security alarm from ila can break the silence.

@Christa Carr: I received my daily email, and this grommet, on your site, says "free shipping today." Yet when I put them (2) in my cart and proceeded to check out, it added $5.90 for shipping. How is that "free shipping today?"

@Katherine Klinger The "key" just fell out or got pulled out of my little alarm but it must not have worked because I didn't hear anything. I just happened to notice it was missing the other day. Is this replaceable? My daughter's works because she accidentally set it off today!

How fab that The Daily Grommet is featuring ila alarms. I'm on a mission to persuade all women to carry an alarm and stay safe, please see my top tips in the Daily Grommet blog. In answer to a recent question about turning off the ila Dusk - it's really simple, just replace the pin and the scream will cut out completely, very handy if you just want to try it out - being reassured it works will also make you feel safer. My 13 yr old daughter has one, all her friends are really jealous!

The WEDGE is also useful to bring with you on vacation, business trips anywhere you feel you might like to add extra security to your front door. The WEDGE also acts as a door stop combined with an alarm to prevent anyone from entering. It's very useful and travels light. College students also like to have the WEDGE for their dorm rooms.

I am a traveling sales "MAN" and spend more nights that I care to think about in hotels all over the country and on several occasions I have had strangers walk into my hotel room late at night, because a duplicate key and room were given to the two of us. The Wedge would certainly make me feel more comfortable and eliminate unnecessary terror in the middle of the night! Great idea!

In my dreams when I need to scream no voice comes out. This is one of my biggest fears! The female scream makes sense to me and would immediately convey "a female is in danger" versus an alarm that could mean someone's car has been broken into. Great idea!

What a great idea! But being a total klutz, I have to ask: how easy would it be to pull the pin out by mistake? I'm worried that I could catch it on something and then "lose" the pin.

  • Julia
    Julia – Grommet Team
    9/29/2010 8:05 PM

@ Karen, From one klutz to another, I can assure you that the pin is hard to lose. The design prevents you from releasing it inadvertently. If you do trigger the alarm, the sound is so loud it will grab your attention until you put the pin back in to make it stop.

@ Jacqui, We are so pleased you joined the conversation. I know it is late in London. Thank you.

Great question! The alarms are specially designed to be easy to pull out with your fingers but not easy to come off by accident. When you pull the pin out, you pull off a latch like device that is attached to the pin which is easy for your fingers to handle and put back in if needed. Hope this helps!

Jacqui, a few things I have done around the house for security for my wife and I; first of all, if you have one, keep the garage cleaned out to allow everyone in the house, or at least the family members that go to work/gym extremely early or late during darkness, to park their vehicle inside with a garage door opener, and not open the garage door in the morning until their car doors are locked and same at night upon return. Never leave a garage door clicker in the car or your address on documents in the car. Get the garage door clickers that you can put on your key chain and keep them with you, not in a parked car with your address in the glove compartment inviting trouble at home. Program lights outside your house to stay on all night or at least when family members usually come and go in the darkness hours. Consider installing controller in home that you can turn on outside and inside lights as you return home in the evenings. Programmer on light switch for just outside lights only costs $10 and most can be installed by you. consider a home alarm system, about $200 install and $15 per month (AND USE IT EVERY TIME YOU LEAVE THE HOUSE AND GO TO BED EACH NIGHT). These steps will not only vastly increase your security but the security of your belongings as well.

Hello Alan - Wow not only some great tips, but a great example of how effective it is to spend a few minutes just having a look around your home to see what simple things we can do to make it safer for us and our families. Often just putting yourself in the place of a burglar can make you look at your property from a completely different perspective and those few minutes, and sometimes just a small financial outlay, can make a huge difference to our peace of mind. The same goes for when you're out and about, carrying a personal alarm like the ila Dusk is a reassuring presence, always there like an insurance policy. Well done - fab tips which I'll pass on.

Hi, thanks again to Daily Grommet for featuring ila products. Here in the UK we're basking in (unusually) very hot sunshine, but having my doors and windows open to enjoy this last splash of summer warmth isn't particularly good for security, so I've used my ila Wedge on the back door while I'm in another part of the house. It's really simple to use and gives great peace of mind - particularly if you're on your own. Jacqui

@Jacqui Hames: That's right- and recently on a trip I used the Wedge under my hotel room door which made me sleep a lot more soundly. As a token to my awareness of Crime Prevention Month in October I've gave the Wedge to several of my college student friends and family to stick under their dorm room door, as an extra precaution.Thank you Daily Grommet for featuring ila products! I am a part of the zero tolerance club on my campus for violence against women and I will definitely recommend this to all the ladies on campus! Hi, I think the scream is a great idea since no one seems to pay attention to even car alarms anymore! I wish the designs were a bit more varied so that my dad can carry it. I know couple shop owners who feel unsafe carrying ridiculous amount of cash with them at the end of the day and having this would make them feel safer. Thanks!

I received the personal alarm towards the end of a women and violence course over the winter and it couldn't have come at a better time. After learning about all the terrible types of violence it is natural to feel more vulnerable and question how we as a society can improve safety. Having a personal alarm like this one is a great gift because it gives individuals a bit of that feeling of safety back. I appreciate having it and it's definitely nice to know I have it as a back up.
