  • Roadtrip: Up Close and Personal with our Makers

Last week we said farewell to our original HQ in Lexington, MA and this week we moved into our new space occupying a gorgeous building in Somerville, MA. The new space is simply stunning (pics coming soon!) and a lot of design elements we commissioned to make our space truly Grommet.

One of the focal points is our new Partner gallery wall where we highlight some of the true makers and creators we've featured. Here's a peek:

The finished product is stunning, but here are some behind the scenes of the wall in "the making."

  • 6 Women in Tech Dream Big as Girls

We're very excited about today's launch of GoldieBlox here at Daily Grommet.  GoldieBlox is an important product whose mission is an important one -- to inspire social change around the education of girls.

This activity game and storybook  features a female engineer role model named Goldie Blox. Goldie can be anything she wants to be when she grows up, even a female engineer. In the spirit of dreaming big and encouraging girls to see themselves as makers, creators and engineers, we've asked some of our favorite women in tech to share with us, "what did you want to be when you grew up?"

Read their answers below and share yours in a comment!

When I was in kindergarten I wanted to be a librarian, just like my mom. From sixth grade through my senior year of high school, a Broadway start. In college I discovered the study of communications and was hooked. I decided I'd either become a world-famous news anchor or publicist to the best brands in the world. I love that I can keep discovering what I want to be when I grow up.

  • The Grommet Grill with Beth Feldman

Today marks the fourth installment in our series the Grommet Grill (check out our first respondents, Whoopi Goldberg, Chris Brogan and Leslie Carothers). This is a series of  quick interviews with people in our community.  Our community members tend to be people who are uber-passionate about the companies and products they support.  So we decided to turn the table and ask them to imagine what they would do if they were on the “creator” side of the equation.

Grommet Grill with BethFeldmanToday's Grommet Grill is with Beth Feldman. Beth is the President of Role Mommy, an online community created to inspire, entertain and inform today's busy moms. Beth is also a former network TV Executive, PR maven and author -- she has her thumb on the pulse of what's important to women and families and she is definitely someone we enjoy connecting with.

    ...........

Grommet: If you were a product what would be your tagline?

    Beth: You've gotta believe.

    ...........

Grommet: What's your favorite product ever and why?
Beth: It's a tie between my Uggs slippers and my MacBook Air. There is nothing like wearing comfy cozy Uggs while checking status updates on Facebook.
  • Funnies from the cutting room floor

We create a lot of videos here at Grommet HQ, and our media team makes us look so great on each and every one. But, we're not perfect and we know you all get a kick seeing what Grommet life is like behind the scenes. We're happy to show our silly side and show you some of our funnier moments. Remember our blooper reel from a couple of years back? Well, if you're ready for some new outtakes and a little laugh to kick off the week, be sure to watch our new and improved blooper reel.

Happy April Fool's Day friends, be sure to take a moment to laugh today (even if it's at yourself like we're doing)!

  • The Grommet Grill with Leslie Carothers

A few weeks ago, we kicked of a new series called the Grommet Grill (check out our first respondent, Whoopi Goldberg and our second, Chris Brogan). This is a series of  quick interviews with people in our community.  Our community members tend to be people who are uber-passionate about the companies and products they support.  So we decided to turn the table and ask them to imagine what they would do if they were on the “creator” side of the equation.

Grommet Grill with Leslie CarothersToday's Grommet Grill is with Leslie Carothers. Leslie is the CEO of The Kaleidoscope Partnership, a social media agency for the furniture and interior design industry. She's also one of our favorite people to tweet with (follow her here).

Grommet: If you were a product what would be your tagline?

Leslie: I own a website, http://messagesofhope.com, which, today, is empty, but which, one day - I hope soon, will deliver those messages, via products, to millions around the world.

  • Share your favorite Grommets (and WIN)!

We love hearing about how our Grommets fit into your lives. Each Grommet is sort of like our "baby" if you will. We work closely with our partners to launch their story here on Daily Grommet in a meaningful way -- and the bonus is seeing how  you (our community) enjoys the Grommets they purchase. Like, when Juli showed off her (mini) baking skills with her Babycakes maker and shared all her mini recipes with us. And when you post your "Grommets in the wild" photos on our Facebook wall -- it's exciting for us!

Here are two photos yesterday that made our day:

  • The Grommet Grill with Chris Brogan

A few weeks ago, we kicked of a new series called the Grommet Grill (check out our first respondent, Whoopi Goldberg). This is a series of  quick interviews with people in our community.  Our community members tend to be people who are uber-passionate about the companies and products they support.  So we decided to turn the table and ask them to imagine what they would do if they were on the "creator" side of the equation.

Here's our second respondent: Chris Brogan. Chris is no doubt an digital-influencer, however we were most impressed with his mission to send handwritten thank you notes.   Pen or pixel, we knew Chris would have some great answers to our Grommet Grill -- and we were right. Read on:

    ..................

Grommet: If you were a product what would be your tagline?

Chris: It's not fancy, but it works.

Grommet: What's your favorite product ever and why?

Chris: My favorite product ever is the blog, because it allows millions to build a business or simply declare a voice.

Grommet: If you could have invented a product what would have it been?

Chris: I wish I invented Dropbox, because it's such a simple idea, but is changing everything.

Grommet: Did you ever buy something and regret it?

Chris: Only on days ending in Y.

Grommet: Who do you think is the best spokesperson for a product?

Chris: I think the passionate user would be the best spokesperson.

Grommet: What product would you like to see disappear?

Chris: This list is too large to print. Snuggies. Start there.

Blogs and Dropbox? We're not surprised by Chris' online focus. But we are shocked by his lack of luster for Snuggies (okay, not really).

Be sure to connect with Chris on Twitter at @ChrisBrogan and stay tuned for our next Grommet Grill!

  • Recent Press and P.S. our community ROCKS!

As exciting as it is to launch a new product here on Daily Grommet, for us, it gets even better when we get to see how the world reacts to these innovative ideas and passionate entrepreneurial stories. For our partners, a Grommet launch is just the beginning of some well deserved attention.

Here’s the most recent press for our Grommet partners:

Grommet find Bar10der, was featured on the TODAY show as one of the best gadgets of 2012. We agree -- see why we love it in our launch video here.

Speaking of the TODAY show, did you catch it this morning? You might have seen some familiar Grommets (and Grommet team faces!). Here's a clip:

  • The Grommet Grill with Whoopi Goldberg!

We're kicking of a new series of quick interviews with people in our community.  They tend to be people who are uber-passionate about the companies and products they support.  So we decided to turn the table and ask them to imagine what they would do if they were on the "creator" side of the equation.  We're calling this series the Grommet Grill.

    .....................................................................

    Daily Grommet Q & A with Whoopi
Here's our first respondent:  the indubitable Whoopi Goldberg.  Her co-workers on The View say she's pretty tough to buy for…since she is a super savvy consumer herself.  So we were especially curious to know what catches her eye.

Grommet: If you were a product, what would be your tagline?

    Whoopi:  You're good to go!

Grommet: What's your favorite product ever, and why?
Whoopi:  Mr. Clean Magic Erasers, because they do what they say they're going to do .
Grommet: If you could invent a product, what would it have been?
Whoopi: The company that records what alarms should sound [like] ... and designer fire extinguishers.
    .............

    .....................................................................

It sounds like Ms. Goldberg runs a sparkling-clean household.  As she knows, we have a Grommet for that.  Several, in fact.  And we can only imagine what sounds Whoopi would record for the next generation of alarms.
    Thanks Whoopi!

  • Four Kick-Ass Kickstarter Projects We're Supporting

    Kickstarter

The Elevation Dock, a dock for your iphone was the first Kickstarter project to break $1M.

There's never been an easier and better time to be a maker, hacker or creator. The abundance of resources available to ordinary people who want to change the world is far beyond what it once was. There are funding resources available every step of the way, for any type of project. App creators can fund a project on AppsFunder. Sustainable foodie entrepreneurs can look to Credible for early investors. This Mashable article lists even more, geared toward niche organizations. Other types of resource platforms include Quirky which crowdsources and then chooses products to manufacture.
