Thumb-Lite

Stick-on LED light

Instant Illumination

Unlocking a door in a dark entryway. Rummaging through a purse for something small. Finding a dropped item on a nighttime walk. There are countless scenarios when a flashlight would come in handy, but most of us aren’t prepared to lug around a bulky flashlight at all times. For those unexpected moments when you need more light, Thumb-Lite is ready to illuminate.

Smaller than a nickel, Thumb-Lite sticks to just about anything you can imagine: a key, cell phone, money clip, outlet cover, coffee mug, hammer. It’s
ergonomically designed so that you can operate it with one hand, the way you naturally grip an object. The super bright LED light runs on a replaceable alkaline battery that will last three to five years; the case is made of steel with chrome plating; and the adhesive is a high-grade solid acrylic for long-lasting adhesion.

The founder of Thumb-Lite is Jeramiah Larsen, who learned about the technology from a friend and bought the patent so he could bring it to market. What object will you transform into a flashlight?

I read in one of Jules' recent blog posts that she was going to be the EIR @ HBS this fall. What will happen to the Daily Grommet? Holding my breath!

@ Naomi - it's an incredible honor for Jules and Daily Grommet that Jules was selected for this position. There's nothing but great things ahead for Daily Grommet and our community. Just wait!

@ Naomi Hey there Naomi...thanks for asking. Like Katherine said, Daily Grommet is on a great path and it is certainly my first priority. With doing the EIR activity I will be consolidating a variety of mentoring activities I already do over in town. I am looking forward to it and have informally started, via the Boston Startup School work I am doing. It's resident at the Innovation Lab on the HBS/Harvard campus/

@Jules Pieri and @ Katherine Wow! Exciting! Thanks for the quick response. Can't wait to see what lies ahead for Daily Grommet. The company must be in an awesome position AND you must have a really understanding group of investors and board to allow you to spend that much time away from your company. KUDOS!

How long of a battery life do these lights have? And how permanent is the adhesive? If you put it on something like a house key that gets a lot of friction, will it come off?

  • Jeramiah Larsen

@ Julie The battery life under normal use can be up to 5 years. The adhesive is very strong. If you make sure the surface is clean, the Thumb-Lite will stick for a very long time, even under lots of friction.

Is it necessary to maintain pressure on the button to have the light on, or is there an way to lock it on in order to use your thumb on something else?

@ Lani The button does need to be held to activate the Thumb-Lite. The reason we designed it this way was to prevent false activation in a pocket or a purse. This design was also the easiest to use with out fumbling around for a switch.

@ Lani I agree, Lani. It would be a nice feature if it did not require continuous pressure to remain on.

@Catherine I agree that in many applications that would be handy, however if you bought our product, I can assure you, you woul dbe happy with it. :-)

Neat concept. I can see the need to hold rather than switch on/off. My mom's cell phone has called me from inside her purse many times. However, an on/off version for places not prone to turning it on accidentally might also be worth considering to make if technologically possible given size. I'd buy both for different places.

The battery life is estimated at 5 years and the batteries are replaceable. Does the light eventually burn out and if so can it also be replaced? I'm looking for replaceable parts for continued use as opposed to trashing it when "used up".

    Thank you!

@ Emily: Yes!! the battery is replaceable. We'll share with Jeramiah that you are another enthusiast for an "on/off" version.

@ Emily: The LED light bulb cannot be replaced; however it is good for over 100,000 hours and has a lifetime warranty. Thanks for your interest in the on/off option. We'll consider this going forward!

@Jeremiah Larsen: I will likely give these a try. I already have ideas for where I would want to use them. And I have a feeling once others see me using one, any extras I have may be given away rather quickly!

They are expected to last a long time, they are small to dispose of, and I will try to see that all or parts are recycled - by the time I'd need that option you may already have one the light can be replaced in - Keep me in mind :-) !

I bought one of these little lites at a gas station and can not find them again any where. The lite is brite and has a strong stick to the key I attached it on.

An on/off option with the press on button would only add to the positive reasons to buy this great little lite.

    I love it !
