eco skin care

All Natural Sunscreen

Green ‘Screen

Sunscreen is a necessity, but that doesn’t mean it should smell bad or leave white streaks all over your body. You also shouldn’t have to compromise your concern for the environment and for your own body. The founders of eco skin care, Rick Sample (left) and James Urioste, understand these concerns. They spent years researching sunscreen performance (learning much from advances in Australia, which has the highest per-capita rate of skin cancer) and studying naturopathic practices to create an environmentally conscious line of sunscreen.

Rick and James are passionate about offering an affordable, chemical-free, all-natural sunscreen with a great feel and zero fragrance. Say good-bye to your greasy sunscreen, and feel how silky and moisturizing eco is. It won’t clog your pores, and it’s great even under makeup. There are no chemical UV-absorbers, synthetic preservatives, or titanium dioxide in any of the three eco formulas. Non-nano zinc oxide is the active ingredient, and none of the ingredients will sting your eyes. Tested and approved by professional surfers throughout the world, the eco skin care line can surely handle the outdoor activities in your life.

Eco skin care’s commitment to consumers and to a healthier planet runs throughout the production process. They use minimal packaging while prioritizing biodegradability and reef-friendliness without compromising one bit in terms of SPF. This is sunscreen worth keeping in our beach bags.

Well, we’ll walk you through this journey today and hopefully debunk some myths (like, “Does my SPF 100 provide me better protection?”), enlighten and teach you, and help you make better informed decisions for you and your family.

it might be okay for animals in the ocean, but it's not okay on the animals on whom it was tested. it's interesting that you don't put in that this product was tested on animals...come clean with the public if you want to project this image of being so public-minded!

    Hi Randy,

Thanks for your comment. Quite the contrary to your question, we're registered with PeTA (http://www.peta.org/living/beauty-and-personal-care/companies/2802.aspx?SearchUrl=%2fliving%2fbeauty-and-personal-care%2fcompanies%2fsearch.aspx%3fTesting%3d0%26Range%3d2%26PageIndex%3d5), and strictly enforce no animal testing. Apologize for the oversight in not putting that upfront. We do have that designation on all of our tubes.

Doctors recommend that infants under 6 months not wear any sunscreen of any kind. Since I live in Southern California, it's kind of impossible, and my 4 month old is getting pretty tan just by going in and out occasionally. Is this something I could use on him, or do you recommend using only for infants over 6 months? Thanks.

    Hi Jamie,

Our ECO baby is designed for all ages, including infants under six months. Of course, it's always between you and your doctor. My suggestion would be to take (or email) our ingredients list to your doctor and get his/her opinion. Then on first application on your baby try a small test on a hand to see if there's any irritation.

BABY has specific ingredients that are designed to be moisturizing (carrot oil, avocado oil) and also a natural antiseptic (frankincense) that is for any minor skin irritations that may occur.

    Hopefully this helps!

    Best Regards,

    Rick

I am excited about your products but worried that they might be greasy since the sunscreen contains Shea butter. Do your products cause the user's face to sweat? I have had that problem with other sunscreens. Also, I'm curious about the fragrance. How do eco creams smell? I can't stand the coconut scent that many sun products use. Thanks for offering free shipping on the summer set.

    Hi Andy,

Thanks for your inquiry and nice words!

All of our products are fragrance neutral, so that shouldn't be an issue. They are also not greasy. Please understand that if you want a water resistant sunscreen, there has to be oil in the formula (oil repels water). The question is, to what degree is the oil content, and how readily does it absorb into the skin?

With our line, ECO BODY and BABY formulas are oil based (but not greasy!) and are rated as highly water resistant (up to 4 hours of water protection). ECO FACE is a water based formula that is designed as a moisturizing lotion with high SPF (for daily application, even under makeup) but is not designed to be water resistant. You can confidently use any of our formulas on your face as they are all hypoallergenic and won't clog pores.

    Thanks!

    Rick

Is the zinc oxide in your products nano-sized or micronized? Can you tell us a little about the function of the inactive ingredients?

Your products aren't reviewed by the Environmental Working Group in their large sunscreen database. Is that just because they're new? How do your products match up with the EWG's guidelines?

    Hi Lynn,

Our particle sizes are well above the nano scale. While I can't be more specific as this is our trade secret, please know our smallest sizes start at greater than 1 micron and go up from there.

When you say, "the function of the inactive ingredients," here is a detailed explanation of ALL of the ingredients across our line:

    Hi Allison,

Great question! Actually, all of our products are in the EWG database, but a bit hard to find because they're new. Here's a link to ECO FACE, and you can find the rest of the line from there. By the way, ALL of our products have a hazard score of 1 which ties them at the top with several other fine companies.

Hi. I wanted to verify that all of your sunscreen products (not just the ECO Face), are non comedogenic and won't clog pores? I'm particularly interested in the ECO Baby sunscreen. I have a 2 year old daughter with very sensitive skin. She has been getting heat rash on her arms and the sunscreen we are using seems to be making it worst because it is clogging her pores.

    Thanks!

@Jackie: Rick says "All of our formulas are both hypoallergenic & non-comedogenic (won't clog pores). Also, one of our distinguishing ingredients featured in our BABY formula is Frankincense which is a natural skin anti-ceptic, so if your daughter has bad heat rash the BABY formula will really help to take away that irritation and heal her skin."

    Joan, @Katherine Klinger ,

I would caution against adding anything to the formula as the ingredients are carefully selected to work in combination with each other to provide protection and at the same time nourishment for your skin. Try applying smaller amounts incrementally to find the right application, or as was also suggested use ECO FACE. One word of caution, FACE is a light water based formula so don't put it on and go for a swim...you won't be happy! Thanks for giving us a try!

Hello! I have been using Eco-Baby Sunscreen for the past week. It's a bit heavy on my face so I add a few drops of sea buckthorn seed oil for a flawless look. Does this diminish the effectiveness of the sunscreen? I do love the ingredients and don't wish to change to the ECO-Face formula. I feel the benefits of the former is more beneficial to the skin. Please advise. Thanks a lot!

@Joan: Love your eco-friendly DIY style, I've checked with Rick and he says that using both products should not interfere with the effectiveness. However, he suggests using the FACE formula because this is much lighter and is designed as a daily face lotion that contains the high 30+ SPF factor. The FACE formula is non-water resistant though, so don't use it if you will be outside exercising or at the pool or beach.

Can anyone comment on whether these sunscreens here leave your skin with a white tint? I have used some sunscreens and people have told me I either look like a ghost or a clown. I really cannot use a sunscreen on a daily basis that leaves me looking that way. I need something that vanishes so that it doesn't lighten the color of my skin.

    Any comments?

  • Katherine

@Slabs: It can be rubbed in to be very light. I wouldn't call it clown like. It will be more noticeable on someone who has more color. On me, you can't tell that there is a whiteness at all. If you sweat, though, I've noticed that the white can come back to the surface and you will need to rub it in to get it to disappear again. I love this sunscreen. My family did not burn once this summer using this sunscreen. I highly recommend it.

Congrats to the eco skin care Team! "Its line of family safe, environmentally friendly sunscreen products (manufactured in Australia) once again garnered a “1" ranking in the just released, highly regarded Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep sunscreen rankings (http://breakingnews.ewg.org/2012sunscreen/). This is the highest ranking given by the EWG.

The EWG scrutinizes all sorts of personal care products, evaluates them and then ranks them according to each product’s level of safety in regards to the ingredients in their formulas. This widely followed database has had over 140 million searches and is widely respected as a source for unbiased consumer education.

Thank you for this product. Couldn't order it fast enough! I am a grandmother who has her grandkids over quite often for "pool time". I simply hate putting on their sunscreen and cringe every time, because of the chemicals I knew the kids were absorbing. The alternate option, was of course a sunburn, which I couldn't allow either. None of the natural sunscreens I have seen, up to yours now, have satisfied my tough demands of how it should perform. I am so excited that I ordered two, one for myself to keep here, and one to send home with my grnadchildren!

I see that the baby formula does not sting eyes, but don't see that on the face. I have problems since I am a "woman of a certain age" and don't know when I am going to "flash". If the face product stings the eyes do you have any other suggestions, or should I try the baby formulation.

@ May: The ingredients are the same on the website and tubes, However, they may be listed by either their scientific name or their generic name. For instance, on our tubes, an ingredient is listed "Silicon Dioxide" but on the website, it's simply "Silica". These are the exact same thing, just that Silicon Dioxide is the scientific name. Also, "Euphorbia Antisyphilitica (Candelilla) Wax" is simply listed as "Candelilla Wax" on the website, but these are also the same thing.

If there's other ingredients you would like an explanation, please let us know. We'll be happy to clarify.

Clearly we are all becoming more and more knowledgeable about why we seek excellent All Natural Sunscreens like ECO for physiological reasons, but did you know that traditional chemical UV absorber based sunscreens are also suspected in helping to contribute to the growing coral bleaching problems that are now effecting up to 10% of the world's beautiful coral reefs? It's estimated that 4,000 to 6,000 metric tons wash off swimmers bodies ANNUALLY. That is the equivalent of 35 MILLION tubes! If you want to learn more, then visit our website, www.ecologicalskin.com. For this reason, we are the exclusive sunscreen of the world renown Surfrider Foundation (www.surfrider.org), one of the leading marine advocacy groups. Our entire line of products are reef safe and biodegradable.
