Geocaching Device

Treasure Hunting 101

Geocaching is a fun way to explore the outdoors, discover new places, and teach kids navigational skills while embarking on a real-world treasure hunt. With Geomate.jr, you can hit the ground running.

The family-friendly Geomate.jr device comes preloaded with 250,000 geocaches, and it displays the 20 sites closest to your location. It also tells you key details about each geocache, such as the size, difficulty, and terrain.
You can save your home coordinates, so Geomate.jr is always ready to help you find your way back, and you can save found caches to keep track of your successful hunts.

Geomate.jr is designed to work with a number of add-ons that take high-tech treasure hunting to the next level. An update kit lets you sync your device with an international registry of geocache locations, so you have the latest coordinates at your fingertips, and it allows you to create your own custom caches for private scavenger hunts. If you want to hide your own treasure, a cache-hiding starter kit includes a cache box, tracking tag, small treasures, a logbook and more. You can also choose packaged geocaching/scavenger hunt kits to help you plan your own camping- or spy-themed party expeditions, (see the details tab for specifics).

With geocaching, every location is an adventure. Are you ready to hunt?

    Hi everyone! I'm Ed and I'm here to tell you all about geocaching. It may sound daunting, but it's really quite easy and fun. How can I help?

    @Pat Koger

    Both boys would love to have a GPS each if that works from a budget. Also add 1 Update Kit and 1 Starter kit to create a find.

    We love to geocache as a family-it is a great way to make vacation drive times fly by and show the family different areas we would have never ventured too--lots of fun and this looks lke a good idea for my kids to have their own-I see this comes preloaded with caches--is there the ability to change them/or update late?

    @ April

    HI April,

    You can purchase the update kit cord and you can download new caches from our website anytime. It is very user friendly for the kids to have their own device. Works great as a companion device to a parent holding their smart phone.

    Enjoy the Outdoors Making Memories.

    I would like to buy 2 kits for a church event to create a scavenger hunt competition between two teams. Will the two "finders" and groups of items signals' clash with each other?

    @Tyson Taylor

    HI Tyson,

    The Geomate.Jrs are great for a private Scavenger Hunt or Geocahing. You can store up to 20 private locations on the GPS. You will need to purchase an Update Kit Cable if you want to preload these on to your Geomate.Jr.

    The 2 finders will not clash with each other using the Geomate.Jr's

    Have a great event!

    Hi Ed!

    I love your product but I don't quite understand it. Do you pre-plant these little caches of treasure or is this more of a metal detector device with loaded GPS? It sounds wonderful but I don't quite understand how it finds things...

  • Annaliese

    @Cindy There are no metal detections involved. The locations are previously loaded online so that the GPS can find the coordinates. When you search with your geomate.jr it will lead you within a few feet of the geocache and then you get to search for the treasure!

    @Cindy

    Hi Cinday,

    The geocaches are hidden at an exact GPS coordinates and the GPS will bring you to the that location. Then you need to find the container at that location and figuring out what it is. Someone has hidden those geocaches and the GPS will bring you to the spot.

    Does this help?

    Thanks,

    Ed

    I thought this was about geodes when I first heard the term. I was a District Manager for World of Science stores several years ago and always loved geology, especially seeing, handling and collecting different rock and mineral specimens. Reading more about this, I am not disappointed, but could see how enjoyable this would be.

    As I did not enjoy reptiles and amphibians, would be very leery of stick my fingers under a rock.

    There are many geocaches that do not hide under rocks but in trees, on poles under bushes, etc. Most geocaches bring you to cool locations that you may not have known existed. It gets you exploring the great outdoors.

    I have a friend that wants to hide caches on his property. Can this be used for 'private' caches and other people, that might also have this device, unable to find?

  • Ed

    @ pat t

    Hi Pat,

    Your friend can hide items on his propoerty and can use the Geomate.Jr to locate them with the custom cache features. They will need to get the coordinates at those locations and use the Update Kit cable to download back into the Geomate.Jr GPS.

    Does this answer your question?

    Is this an activity for children only? Or, are there searches that are open to adults? Sure sounds interesting and fun especially if you are traveling.

    I love geocaching, highly recommend giving the hobby a try, and even recently picked this item to add to my GPSing devices for a song. Worked great right out of the box till I tried to use the update cable.

    Then I found out the problem, the device is poorly supported outside of getting a basic file transfer, the company the created the device was bought out and the current support is up in the air where or not any future development will happen. As such I have a device that goes up to July 2011.

    It could be that the cable is bad but for $30 I am just going to save for a grown up model. and use this as a toy.
