Handcrafted Willow Twig Mirror

Twigging Out

Have you even taken a walk in the woods or along the shore and picked up an unusual stone or shell or piece of driftwood to take home? Well if you have, you and Rick and Denise Pratt are on the same page.

Rick, owner of a nine acre farm in Wooster Ohio, began collecting fallen Willow twig sapling branches, and as inspiration took over, he started fashioning furniture, shelving, and chairs from the Willows. He mixed in other
found objects like metal, wood, stones, copper, and old barnboard, and his wife Denise added whimsy with bold color, and before they knew it, Around the Bend Willow Furniture became their life and their love. “A traditional and contemporary blend of furnishings for the home and garden,” is their trademark.

Today’s Grommet, a one-of-a-kind mirror, is hand-built and of a unique design. Rick’s finds have turned into a housewarming gift, wedding present, or Father’s Day gift that will be treasured forever.

Hi Daily Grommet! I'm delighted to be here today. I love making pieces like our Colored Mirror from the beautiful willow I gather. Where I live in Ohio, the marsh lands and creek banks have been an ideal area for the cultivation of Black Willow. Much of my time each week is spent in the swamp gathering fresh saplings. Every sapling is a little different and must be bent while green. We do not use molds or forms; each and every piece is bent freehand and nailed into place. I invite you to watch the video today to see exactly how we make each mirror. Enjoy!

It's just amazing to see all of the work that goes into this creation! It's one of those things you can't appreciate by looking at the finished mirror, the video really complements the full story. I'm sure it's even more beautiful in person! PS - I have a sudden urge to buy a vowel.

I've seen the mirror in the video a number of times in real life and it is truly beautiful. And it always draws lots of "Wow" comments from people seeing it for the first time. Glad to see today's video with "the rest of the story" about the mirror's creation.

This mirror is lovely. I really appreciat all the work and care that goes into creating each one. I'm not sure the colors are right for my place. Does Rick do custom colors?

I really am enjoying this site Daily Grommet. My sister recently told me about it. I have one suggestion, though, would love to be able to zoom in to see more detail of the mirror (similar to what LL Bean has) or even real closeup photos.

Oolala!!! Rick, your grommet is a real wow piece. I had the opportunity to see it in person and admire your craftsmanship. I like how you designed it to be playful, yet balanced. Also, I saw how you mixed in a hint of metallic within in your vivid color palette. Very cool.

@jackie- I just got off the phone with Rick, he is at a show and hopes to check in later, and he said he can customize the mirror by color palette and by size. Just measure your space and get him the dimensions and color scheme. Pricing will vary with size. He also wanted me to mention that the sticks will be around 8 inches long all around the mirror. The most popular size and color combination is the one Daily Grommet is offering today.

@ Pat A. thanks for your kind words and suggestion about close-ups. All great input! Also, just wanted to be sure you knew that you can see the larger image by double-clicking on the mirror.

Hi Rick, I love that you are using black willow trees for your mirrors! They are very sustainable because they are native to North America and are fast-growing and plentiful trees. I like how you paint the wood in vibrant, upbeat colors but the naturalness of the wood still comes through. They are really beautiful and eye-catching. I can imagine them as a real focal point in a room.
