Hape

Wooden Toys

Positively Playful

Hape Toys takes playtime very seriously. Sure, founder Peter Handstein wants kids to have fun, but he also wants people to be inspired by his company’s toys and how they’re made. Safety and sustainability are top priorities that influence everything from the design of the toys and the sourcing of materials to manufacturing and distribution.

Bamboo, which is eco-friendly for its rapid regrowth qualities, is used in Totter
Tower, for instance. Kids can build wild formations with the angled elliptical blocks, which are edged with velvet to add friction. The natural beauty of bamboo also shines through in Quattro, which challenges players to align colored rings on bamboo shoots, and Pallina, a game of strategy that involves intertwined sticks and suspended balls.

Hape Toys’ lineup includes a number of classic toys -- mini kitchen appliances, marble runs, and play instruments -- that have been recreated sustainably. Each piece is designed to engage kids and to promote skills such as spatial thinking, dexterity and social acumen. It’s all in good fun, yet it’s also responsible design. That’s what makes the difference between toys that get tossed and toys that get passed down for generations.

Hi Everyone. We’re couldn’t be more excited to have Daily Grommet feature Hape today. I have to tell you right off that the only thing better than working for a toy company, is working at Hape. Not only do I get to offer product design suggestions and develop marketing programs, I do this for a company whose philosophy is “learning is at the heart of our toys.” This drives all the product development activities in order to make a toy that boosts a sense of wonder and curiosity in children. Our founder, Peter Handstein, has promoted this for years and the company lives and breathes it. Our world class production facility is a remarkable place – it’s truly a modern day Santa’s workshop - with state-of-the-art equipment, an on-site water treatment center and quality trained elves (I meant staff!). We hope an experience of Hape play is one when children love play, they learn.

We love hearing direct from moms, dads and gift givers, so let’s chat!

Using bamboo in toys is very cool! Congrats Hape! Good to hear that a toy company is stepping and going even more green.

@Chris Hodge We think so, too, Chris! Peter Handstein hosts a twice-yearly bamboo event for industrial design students. They spend 2 weeks at Hape's bamboo conservancy creating bamboo toy concepts for a "Project Runway" type of competition. Several of our bamboo toys were developed from this immersion experience.

Bamboo is a unique material. Its actually a grass and super strong but yet flexible and it grows incredibly fast - some types as much as 40' in a year.

Can you tell me where your toys are manufactured? I love them.

@Susan Williams We manufacture in our company-owned production facility in China. We've been manufacturing there since 1995 with a terrific international team schooled in safety and quality.

    We're glad you like 'em!

I have given many Hape toys to our nieces and nephews. The kids love them and they wear like iron. I will have to tell them more about bamboo growing that fast. Very interesting. Anything new toys coming up that I should be aware of?

@ Debbie S. Hi Debbie, thanks for being a Hape customer. We're glad to hear the toys were such hits. Narrowing our list down is a challenge but I have to say my favorites are the Pound and Tap Bench, our new Quadrilla Twist and Rail Set and the new Quattro game. All have been well received by gift givers and have also won several international design awards.

I was SOOO excited about these toys as I read but was lacking the information I was looking for...Made in the USA. Such simple ideas and keepsake toys you want us to keep for generations...wouldn't it be great to say it was also made by some of our own Grandfathers and Grandmothers generations down the road? won't be purchasing these...

@ USA MOM: Robin and our other Grommet Partners would prefer to make the products in USA. However, the US does not have all the available manufacturing capabilities in many product advances and technologies, at least at this time. We see territory being regained there every year, and I am sure that Robin will be watching carefully to pull production over to the USA when and if it becomes available.

Proceeds of a purchase will go to the retailer (Daily Grommet in this case!) and we are all very grateful when you purchase the discoveries that we share with you. It's what keeps Daily Grommet going and our team employed. Another piece of the revenue will go to Robin's US team. So don't think that your purchase of a non-USA made product only keeps non-USA folks employed. I'm waving my hand as one of the Americans who will stay employed by your purchases.

We have a large assortment of Made in the USA products that you can check out too.

And of course, let us know if you come across any great new products made in USA here.

We love Hape toys at our house. They are beautiful and very innovative. My daughter has the Sunshine Dollhouse that I know she will pass down to her children. I also buy the baby toys as shower gifts.

@ Jennifer L. Hi Jennifer. Its great to hear the bamboo dollhouse - also one of my favs! - is so well received. Be sure to check out our musical line for shower gifts here at Daily Grommet. The Hape range was designed specifically for kiddies at 12 months, perfect to pound or tap our early melodies!

We also love Hape toys. The bamboo doll house is a special favorite at our house. The house is forever changing, with many other Hape toys/pieces finding their way to a new home there. It inspires creative play.

    Thanks Hape.
