Urban Super Tool

A Go-To Tool

The idea for today’s grommet came to entrepreneur Kevin Royes as he sorted through his toolbox, trying to find all the instruments needed to hang a picture in his apartment. Could he get rid of all this “stuff” and combine all the single-purpose tools – the hammer, tape measure, level, screwdriver -- into one piece of equipment perfectly sized for the urban home? Yes, he could.

Kevin’s creation is the kelvin.23. Just about everyone, from a college kid to an elderly parent, could benefit from one of these snazzy little
devices in their home, car or boat. The kelvin.23 includes 23 essential tools in one sleek, compact package. It’s perfect for routine household tasks like hanging a picture, unscrewing a battery cover, or putting together your latest ready-to-assemble furniture purchase.

The kelvin.23 is designed around a 16-bit screwdriver, which is tucked, army-knife style, into the handle. The screwdriver can stand straight or bend at 90 degrees for extra torque in hard-to-reach spaces. The shaft is also magnetic, so you can keep loose screws at hand while working. Add a built-in tape measure, liquid level, carbon steel hammer and an LED flashlight, and you’ve got a multi-function tool that blows competitors out of the water. This ingenious little device really is a toolbox in the palm of your hand. And it’s much better than using a butter knife as a screwdriver or trying to hammer a nail with your stilettos!

Hi Daily Grommet. Patrick here from Kelvin Tools to answer any questions you have about the kelvin.23. Debbie Travis calls it the Swiss Army knife of home decor and we think you'll agree. From hanging a picture, to fixing a cabinet door this little tool gets the little jobs done fast. I am looking forward to hearing what you think of this versatile tool.

It looks awesome, especially the magnet, flashlight and level features. But if I put a lot of torque on this, will it bend/break? That is to say, realistically, how much pressure can it withstand? Also, how long is the tape measure?

@Robyn: The tape measure is 5ft/1.5m long. I will let Patrick expand on how much pressure it can withstand. It held up great in all of the situations we put it through.

@Robyn: Hi Robyn, great question and thanks for the kudos! You are able to put a considerable amount of torque on the kelvin.23, especially when it is locked at 90 degrees.

I think the all-in-one idea is great. I would also like to know how well will it hold up. I have used other consolidated items in the past that have fallen apart quickly or have not been made sturdy. Does this have a warranty?

@Linda: Hi Linda, that is a valid concern. I believe we've all owned all-in-one products that did not hold up in the end. The kelvin.23 was built with quality materials such as a cast aluminum body, a carbon steel bit extender, a steel hammer surface and quality CRV screwdriver bits to make sure it will last. Hence our tagline - kelvin tools: tools for good, tools for life.

We do have a 1-year warranty on our products as well to back that up.

@Linda: I'll back up Patrick's comment with my personal experience–the kelvin.23 is rock solid. I used it during a massive move where I abused it as I assembled multiple furniture items and hung a ton of photographs. I'm a persistent quality skeptic, too, but this tool held up and convinced me that it was truly grommet worthy!

Looks really cool, something I could use on the job. Question: Where is it made?

    Thanks!

@Matt Tyrrell: Thanks! We think so as well. The kelvin.23 was designed and innovated in Vancouver, BC Canada but is manufactured in China.

    (1) A thought for future versions of this nifty tool - I'd find needle-nose pliers more handy than the hammer if keeping this in my kitchen. I rarely need a hammer, and likely wouldn't use it to pound things, to prolong the life of the tool, but I often have use for pliers - even if they were quite small. (2) I saw on the net that it comes in a clamshell - if this is true, is the package made from recyclable plastic? and (3) while keeping cost down likely results from its being made over-seas, I'd willingly pay more for it if it lives up to what I'm hearing here at the Grommet AND it was manufactured in North America. Thanks!

@Patrick Gatien: grateful for the reply on items 1 & 3, but wondering about item 2 - I am admittedly fanatical about reuse & recycling, we try to minimize packaging in everything we buy, hoping there's swirling arrows on the package somewhere, if indeed the tool comes in a plastic clamshell container?

@Emily: The kelvin.23 is packaged in a premium gift box which is made of cardboard and a plastic PET insert that holds the kelvin in place. Both are recyclable items. Also, the box is quite sturdy and can definitely be reused around the house for multiple purposes.

Looks like a cool tool. I know that it will be compared to a Swiss Army knife but I love the fact that all the screw bits are in the palm of your hand. Just for future models. Add scissors to it or a blade. Thanks for listening.

I just received this tool and love it! Very cleverly designed. Perhaps in the next one there could be a blade for cutting & pliers. I do have a Leatherman tool that has that & more, so I'll store them together, along with a roll of duct tape ~ it's every girl's new best friend. Keep the great ideas coming!

I have difficulty removing bits without use of pliers. Is there a release button or something I am not doing?

@Kay: Hi Kay, I ran your question by Patrick and here is his response:

"Hi Kay! Sorry you're having problems getting the bits out but the kelvin.23 doesn't have a release button for them. It may just be that the rubber casing needs to be used and softened a little. The bits do need to fit a little snug so they don't fall when using the other tools built into the kelvin.23. Hope you're enjoying it!"
