Nuu-Muu

Exercise Dress

Fit for Life

Workout gear has come a long way. Each season it gets more stylish and more tempting to wear outside the gym. Christine Nienstedt is taking this trend even further with incredibly comfortable, figure-flattering dresses that are designed for active life.

Christine’s Nuu-Muu dresses are as functional as they are playful. The fabric (a polyester/Lycra blend) is breathable, moisture wicking, quick drying, and resistant to wrinkles
and stains. The cut of the dresses is fitted without being restrictive, so you’ve got full range of motion, and the shape is designed to cover most sport bras. Women have run marathons, climbed mountains, and biked across state lines wearing their Nuu-Muus.

The idea to create exercise dresses came to Christine after she wore an old polyester dress in a half-marathon and got a slew of positive comments. Deciding that the world was missing out on whimsical exercise wear, she teamed with Ashley Fullenwider (the first person Christine ever saw wearing a dress on a bike) and started designing. Nuu-Muu’s feel-good dresses are fun, confidence boosting, and incredibly versatile. Those same qualities are core values of the Nuu-Muu company, which is committed to hard work, healthy living, inspiring women and girls, and making their products in the U.S. Don’t be surprised if Nuu-Muu dresses become your go-to gear for sports, travel and everyday life.

Can you offer more detailed info about sizing? Should we be thinking exercise-wear sizes, like for yoga clothes, or dress sizes? Also, it seems to me that this would be great (and much more comfortable than a lot of exercise wear) for my pregnant sister. Any plans to do maternity dresses?

@ Michelle - I am copying the sizing chart over from the details tab. It's always a good idea to have it in two places. Great idea about doing this in maternity sizes! I will let Ashley and Christine respond to that.

    @Michelle:

Thanks for your question about a Nuu-Muu maternity dress! Actually, many women have enjoyed Nuu-Muu "as is" for maternity-wear, especially in the first two trimesters. The stretch and tension of the fabric works well for growing bellies. We don't have any specific plans for a maternity version at this time but we know a lot of expecting moms enjoy Nuu-Muu well into their pregnancies and some size up to have the option of a comfortable go-to dress longer than their pre-pregnancy size will work. I hope this helps!

Like too many exercise companies, your concept of large sizes is way too small—I am usually a 2X, size 20 or 22. Oh, well.

Hi Michelle -- I think our size chart is based on regular exercise wear. Hopefully the size chart will help if you still have questions. For folks who usually wear a "L" or any size, we hope that the corresponding Muu will work! At least that is the intention . . . Best, Ashley

One of the places you say that this can be worn is at the beach. Can you really swim in one? That would be so fantastic! One piece suits are so cumbersome when you want to use the bathroom, but most 2 pieces are much too immodest for me.

Also, can you wear this over a shirt when the weather is cool enough to need sleeves?

    @ Mindy ,

full disclosure, I am part of the nuu-muu team but I can tell you absolutely you can wear them swimming. I was in Mexico last October and got a bit sunburned my first day snorkeling so the next day I just threw on my Muu over some bottoms and hit the water. It was super easy to swim in and kept my red back out of the blistering sun. When I got out and sat on the beach for 15 minutes it was dry and looked perfect for going out to dinner that evening. there is nothing you can't do in your Muu!

    @ Mindy

I wish I could find the photo of 4 women swimming off of their sailboat in their Nuu-Muus on their way ashore...their plans were to dry on the beach for a while and head to dinner!

Yes, you can swim in a Nuu-Muu! There is more fabric than a swimsuit so you need to expect that. Once you get out of the water, you will probably want to wring your dress out a bit to help the drying process get going. I know Ashley loved wearing her Nuu-Muu in the water slides when she took my girls last year...

I have to admit, Nuu-Muus are the very best emergency back-up swim suit that a girl could ever hope for. I can't count the number of times I was disappointed to discover that I didn't have my suit -- BUT WAIT -- Nuu-Muu saves the day again. Yes -- there's a wee bit of a drag due to the amount of fabric, but that just makes you stronger, right?

PS Mindy - you can absolutely layer over and under a Nuu-Muu. Many customers put a layer under so you can see the entire dress. My favorite style is to layer over so you get the peek-a-boo skirt effect.

I look forward to my next Nuu-Muu, and am so happy to wear them everywhere. Full disclosure: I am Ashley's mom, but would wear Nuu-Muus everywhere, even if she weren't my Favorite Daughter. For those of you in hot climates, I'd just like to add how great a Nuu-Muu is in hot, sticky weather. Because it felt so silky, I was sure that my 18 mile marathon training day in south Georgia during August was going to be wretched. Nevertheless, I was committed to trying out the Nuu-Muu. Surprisingly, the fabric really did wick away what we southerners like to call my "glow".

I want to second the idea of moving into larger sizes! I LOVE this idea too, and I know MANY active large women who would love to have workout wear that's not uncomfortably revealing, but more stylish and flattering than a floppy t-shirt and sweats. This would suit us SO well! (I'd need a 6X, just as a data point.)

Keep up the great work, and good luck to you!

Hi Marty -- Thanks for chiming in and it's really good for us to get this kind of feedback. We're still a relatively new company and adding sizes and new products is a bit risky, but if we know there are interested parties out there, it makes us that much closer to taking that leap of faith. Thanks again.

any advice for us pear-shaped women? I am your size medium on the top and your size large on the bottom. Which do I order? I don't want the top swimming on me, nor would I be happy with too-tight hips.

I ordered 2 Nuu Muus in XL. They fit well, and both give me plenty of space in the hip area so I don't feel self conscious when working out. Curiously,I am experiencing a bit of "gapping", in the bust line near my arm pit, (too big) especially with one of the dresses, even though they are the same size. Size L would most probably fit better up top. I went out and bought color coordinated sports bras to better camoflauge the problem and that has worked well. Otherwise, I love the dresses! Thanks, Catherine

OK true confession. I have worn my new Nuu Muu three times in three days. (Cycling, walking, and boot camp.) But what is the big confession? It's that I pulled it out of the dirty laundry to do so. I really could not wait for it to be washed. I never do that with any other workout gear!

I just signed up for the Daily Grommet and was blown away by these

dresses! The Hubs was in a triathlon in the spring and from watching the large amount of female competitors, I was amazed that there wasn't anything more creative or modest for women for wearing while active. I myself just got back into working out with weights and tire of wearing the baggy t-shirt outfit someone else mentioned. I said all that too say that this dress has been an item that has waited by sooooooo many women and girls (and me!) for looking stylish, being designed for sport, and maintaining modesty while traveling our own journeys to better health, fitness, and fun. I plan on purchasing one and seeing what you have for children since ours enjoy the same type competitions as their father does! The girls will love a dress to run in!
