Stormy Kromer

Wool Hats

Midwest Classic

Stormy Kromer caps are an American original. Each one is hand-stitched, just like the first was back in 1903, when railroad engineer George “Stormy” Kromer asked his wife, Ida, to modify an old baseball cap so it would stay put when he stuck his head out the window of a train. Ida’s creation held fast, even in fierce winds, and soon other railroad workers wanted her caps for themselves.

Originally dubbed the Blizzard Cap and made at the Kromer Cap Company in Milwaukee, Wisc., the hearty classic today is sewn in
Ironwood, Mich., where Jacquart Fabric Products is based. CEO Bob Jacquart took over production of the iconic caps in 2001, when he learned that they were going to be discontinued, and his daughter, Gina, now runs the family business.

Stormy Kromer caps are made from 100% wool. They’re comfortable, snug, and sturdy. The visor gives you added protection from the sun and wind, and the earband can be pulled down over your ears when you want extra coverage. The silhouette has a classic, salt-of-the-earth vibe -- but you don’t have to be ice fishing or snowmobiling to pull it off. It’s equally at home on the trails, in the city, and out on the town. It’s no wonder these cool caps have stuck around for more than 100 years.

    Hey everybody, I’m Bob, one of two kinds of people in the world: folks who’ve never heard of Stormy Kromer, and folks who are fanatics for it. What started out as a hat company in 1903 has grown into a full line of made-in-the-good-old-U-S-of-A outdoor apparel, and when you wear it, well, you'll know why those folks are fans.

    I love these hats and would like to get one for my daughter, who lives in DC. My only concern is the size - she can never find a had that fits her head - they're all too tight/small.

    @ Lori Jack Hey Lori Jack, Sizing does come up from time to time especially if you are trying to surprise someone. If you can get her to measure her head with a cloth tape (and not tell her why) and then call Kirsten in customer service, she will convert it to a hat size for you. Enjoy your week Bob J

    @ Lori Jack One more thing Lori Jack. If you click on Details tab (under video & photos) on the Daily Grommet site, there's a conversion chart for you. Hope this all helps.

    @ Cat Hello Cat,

    For some reason, the flower was taken off of a Petal Pusher for the photo. You would have two options; one to buy a winter white/raspberry Petal Pusher and take the flower off as was done in that photo or buy a winter white Ida cap that will have the tie in the middle of the front of the cap. I really like the flower on it...maybe I am partial because my wife Denise designed it!

    Hi Bob: I'm in the same boat as Lori Jacks' daughter. I've measured and I would need an XL hat for my noggin. Is there any way to get the charcoal/pink in the XL size?

    @ Lori W: I pulled this info from the DETAILS tab re: the most accurate way to measure (just in case you didn't see it): "The easiest way is to hold a piece of string and measure around your head where the hat will sit (about an 1/8” above the forehead and ears) in inches. Then, compare your number with our sizing chart. If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size. If you pull the string too tight or hold it too loosely you won’t get a perfect fit."

    My husband and I couldn't survive Michigan winters without our Stormy hats; they are blissfully warm, comfortable and durable. I also appreciate the styles just for ladies; even outdoors in the dead of winter we still want to look cute!

    Ok so I've pinned this to Pinterest and told everyone in my family how much I want one of these, so hopefully there will be one of the 'girlie' ones in my near future. I love that they can be worn with casual or dressy coats, all the while keeping my head/ears warm.

    @Chew-Hoong .

    I could definitey use an XXL too! Otherwise it will go in the pile of hats that don't fit.
