Cool Books for Special Times

If parental instincts were always spot-on, I’d never have left a paint tray and roller unattended and within the reach of my three-year-old son when the doorbell rang. Needless to say, I learned that lesson the hard way. But some of life’s major moments are too important to leave to seat-of-the-pants parenting. When it's time for a little kid to make a big change, from a new sibling to a new school, the _Change Is Strange_ series of personalized books from mother-daughter team Penny Asher and Ricki Booker is a welcome resource. Charlie (who hijacked my paint roller) loves hearing his name and the name of his new school in his book, _My First Day of School_. The little details -- such as working the title of Charlie’s favorite story into the text -- make a big difference: Every time we get to the part where the teacher reads _The Cat in the Hat_ to the class, Charlie says, “Hey, I have that book, too!” To help Sam, who’s nearly two, begin to separate from his beloved pacifier, we took a tip from his personalized _No More Pacifier_ book and created a special container (using the cool, briefcase-like box the books were shipped in) for storing it during the day. Throughout the series, the graphics make the books even more special. The wildly colorful illustrations provide a busy backdrop for the good advice and gentle reassurances -- just like in life.

Hi there, everyone! I am very happy to have my books featured on Daily Grommet today, and I'd be happy to answer your questions. I created the CHANGE IS STRANGE books as a tool to help children deal with change and transition. It's not easy for little kids to make big changes. Let's face it--change is strange at any age. That's why we have created the CHANGE IS STRANGE series, developed to help make life's changes easier for kids and their parents. By demystifying the process and very specifically laying out the details of what will happen during the transition process in our story lines, we have successfully removed much of the anxiety associated with change.

When Daily Grommet approached me to customize We're Having A Baby and test it out with my 4-year old, I didn't have high hopes. It was clear that Quinn had had just about enough of talking about our new baby (due any minute).

Then, the book arrived. We opened it together ... I tentatively said "Oh this is a book about YOU! Look it has YOUR name in it!" and that seemed to do the trick.

We read all about how there was a new baby coming and how he probably wasn't sure he liked that because he liked being alone with Mommy and Daddy. Interest obviously piqued, my son asked me to keep reading.

Together, we learned that Mommy and Daddy would always have time for their Quinn and that he was their SuperQuinn (illustration complete w cape!), who would be the best big brother ever. Then we casually left the book in his room and that night he brought that book plus another baby book we'd received (one he had incidentally tossed on the floor when it was given to him) and asked us to read them both to him!!

I think so many books just gloss over a child's concerns and make it seem like everything is supposed to be perfect. This is a great, very REAL book that both validated how Quinn was feeling (ambivalent and worried) and simultaneously reassured him that this big change would be a good one for everyone, including him.

I like these a lot. My sister is expecting her third baby, and I like the idea of one of these books for her two other children. Can you customize books to more than 1 child in a single book, or is it 1 child per book?

Liz, The books can only be customized for one child at a time. The purpose of the book is to make the sibling feel really special at a time when they may feel really scared about how much attention the new baby will take away from them. So, we felt it important for every child to have their very own book.

They've carried us through the though times and made it a whole lot easier. The stories and illustrations are fabulous and we love the personalization! Thanks Ricki!

I think I've underestimated the impact that some changes will have on my children, and I could have really used the "first day of school" book for both of my kiddos! Thanks, Ricki, for creating this series. Beautiful, creative, helpful, and fun. And the ability to personalize is real icing on the cake!
