Give Your Walls Something to Talk About

Daily Grommet and social media site kirtsy ran a contest to discover new grommets. And the winner is . . . Rum Sum Sum! Three years ago, company founder and mom Anne Gearon moved from Australia to Chicago. Pushing a stroller through the city with a new camera in tow, Anne fell in love with the quirky type she saw everywhere. Trained as an industrial designer, Anne couldn’t help spotting an adorable “A” here and a tremendous “T” there. Slowly, she built an image bank of Chicago typography. What to do with all of the lovely letters? Anne started by making a name collage for her son’s birthday. Her friends were wowed, and began requesting artwork of their own. In response, Anne started a company she calls Rum Sum Sum. The name refers to a silly nursery rhyme Anne sang to her children as infants. Anne now designs all kinds of things with type — artwork, magnets, and even clothing. One hot item: adorable individualized birthday party Tee’s. The beautiful thing is that each piece can be customized to fit your desires. We’d love to work with Anne on a memorial baby present (with the new arrival’s full name and date of birth), an outstanding housewarming gift (with a friend’s new address), or a wedding present (with the couple’s name and wedding date). You can choose the color scheme, so your rum sum sum original is sure to fit its surroundings. Want to say “Happy Birthday” in Spanish or “Welcome Home” in Tagalog? No problem. Rum Sum Sum speaks your language, colorfully. (Unless you prefer black and white, that is.)

I was very excited to have been nominated as a potential Grommet in the kirtsy.com contest, and then to be selected! I am thrilled that rum sum sum will be featured.

My passion for photography was reignited upon arriving in Chicago from Australia: the architecture, the typography, the landscape – all had an energy that I wished to capture and express – and so… Rum Sum Sum, a family business, was born.

The name Rum Sum Sum is derived from a traditional nursery rhyme that I sing to my children and it is guaranteed to put a smile on their faces.

In addition to several types of Personalized Name Art, I also feature Alphabets, Color Art and Neighborhood Art, and customized children's T-s (a huge hit for new babies, birthday presents, and even party favors not destined for land fill!). I look forward to reading your comments and will be checking in to answer questions over the next few days.

I want to make one of these but need it quickly, my niece is graduating from college next week. How long does it take once I place an order?

@Jo, it typically takes a little over two weeks to receive your order. But we'll alert Anne, rum sum sum founder, to your question. She'll be checking in a bit to answer questions, so she'll give you an answer right here. Thanks!

    Hi there Jo

If you want a piece quickly, simplicity is key. Have a look at my website at some of the gallery images (particularly under saturated color) for ideas. If I use my images, this will be much faster. I can have something ready for printing by early next week if we move quickly.

If you would like to send me an email at [email protected] (and note such things as your niece's name, major, interests, preferred colors, etc.), then I can start to give it some thought.

I put a small line of type at the bottom of each image to make the moment even more memorable e.g. "Created for [niece] on the occasion of her graduation. With love from Aunt Jo - May 2009"

I can't guarantee the printer's turnaround, but they have always have prints ready for shipping 2 days after receiving the print file. Using Air Shipping - you receive the print the next day.

    I hope this helps.

    Cheers

    Anne

My appreciation for rum sum sum started a while ago when I needed an original idea for a farewell present for a family relocating to the UK. Anne made a fantastic t-shirt which was one-of-a-kind. I then continued to ask Anne for help with items such as birthday t-shirts (instead of goody bags) and an alphabet poster for my 2 year old nephew. Anne's products are extremely high quality and she is always willing to work with the customer on ideas and suggestions. I constantly recommend her to those friends needing unique gifts!!

I have seen these rum sum sum pieces and they really are quite stunning. It reminds me of the old collages we used to do, but with a professional eye for design. Am thinking of this for a bridal couple... getting photos of each of them through the years. Very special.

rumsumsum has been my saviour this past year for all my friend's kid's birthdays. The one-off t-shirts and body suits are so beautifully personal yet REALLY reasonably priced (which is always a bonus) and there's nothing better than seeing my friend's faces light up when they see their children wearing a piece of art. I haven't tried rumsumsum's 'photo art' yet, but I'm thinking that these will be my answer to presents this year.

It makes me really happy to know that my customers are happy with their artworks :-) A couple of people have mentioned the art shirts / onesies. These are a perfect gift for a new baby, and a little more affordable than a poster artwork. I hope to have an organic, 100% cotton, American made option available soon.

We were the proud recipients of a 'onesie' for our boy, Sebastian (as featured on the rumsumsum site). It was a beautiful gift, very stylish and a real talking point. It was actually a lovely experience dressing him in such a special piece of clothing. We just love it.

I won a rum sum sum photo collage at a silent auction fundraiser at my daughter's school, and I was completely blown away by what Anne was able to do with my photos. Her artwork is a focal point in my daughter's bedroom, and friends ask me all the time where I purchased it. I like the fact that it's a true original, rather than some mass-produced picture from Pottery Barn or Land of Nod.
