Telephone 2.0

Sometimes I’m not sure who is in charge – me or my three separate phones (home, office, cell). Truth is, I spend way too much time dashing around and collecting messages just to be sure I don’t miss anything important. One day in 2005, Craig Walker had a big idea that will change all that. What if you had a personal phone number you could keep for life? You’d never again have to give everyone you know a new phone number simply because you moved, got a new job, or switched cell phone providers. Using this one number, you could centralize all of your voicemails on your computer. Craig and Vincent Paquet created a company called GrandCentral to bring the idea to life – adding lots of cool features along the way. Google bought the company in 2007, and renamed it Google Voice. Since then, industry watchers have been waiting for the service to become available … finally, it’s time has come. Jeanne tested Google Voice and says it’s like having your own personal assistant – only better, because it’s free! She chats with Craig Walker in our video, and uses Google Voice to record the call so that you can listen in.

Hi everyone! We're happy to be here today, and we want to thank Daily Grommet for featuring Google Voice. Additionally, we're excited to offer 100 free Google Voice accounts to the Daily Grommet community.

Google Voice is a free service that helps you manage your phones and voicemail by unifying all of your telephones with a single number, giving you more control over your communications. With Google Voice, you get a new kind of phone number -- one that is tied to you and can ring all of your phones, along with voicemail that is stored in a single place (and converted to text) so you can access it from your phone or the Web. Google Voice also offers many features, such as spam filters for your phone, call screening, and personalized greetings for your callers, to help you better customize and manage your communications.

We'll be checking in to answer your questions today. Thanks for learning more about Google Voice.

I was one of the lucky few who got the closed beta invite back in the day before Google acquisition. I have been using Google Voice ever since as my main number in Boston. I am really glad Google added VM transcription as one of the feature, though it still needs good bit of work.

That all said, definitely would love to get my hands on another invite, so I could put my wife on Google Voice, since she works in the lab and cellphones are not allowed there. Google Voice feature that allows for scheduling where call will ring, depending on the time of the day, is invaluable in such a situation.

The only worry is - what rules are Google subject to...phone companies are required by law to carry your number from service to service..not sure what Google is required to especially since they do all this for free. Which is nice. Just a thought.

Hi everyone! Thanks for all your interest in Google Voice. I work with Craig Walker at Google, so I wanted to respond to some of the questions you raised here.

@mineola - You can share your Google Voice phone number with as many or as few people as you'd like, and because your Google number isn't tied to a single device, e.g. your home phone number, you do not have to list it in a public phone book.

@Carl - It is possible to transfer a call between different phones that you've linked to the same account. However, it is probably easiest to have one account per person from a logistical perspective.

Also, I noticed a few people asked about whether you can make one of your current phone numbers your new Google Voice number. We don't currently offer the option to port your existing phone number into Google Voice, but this is something that we hope to offer in the future.

    Thanks!

    Sara

I re-checked the list Barbara - and am sorry to say you weren't on it.. I will say, you're in good company though. We had so many entries and could only draw 100 names. You can still click through using the button above and drop your name on the list. Google is giving out the invites and you'll get yours eventually ... just might require a bit of patience. Hope you'll stop back when you get it and let us know what you think.

Google Voice

Universal Phone Number

Telephone 2.0

Sometimes I’m not sure who is in charge – me or my three separate phones (home, office, cell). Truth is, I spend way too much time dashing around and collecting messages just to be sure I don’t miss anything important.

One day in 2005, Craig Walker had a big idea that will change all that. What if you had a personal phone number you could keep for life? You’d never again have to give everyone you know a new phone number simply because you moved, got a new job, or switched cell phone providers. Using this one
number, you could centralize all of your voicemails on your computer.

I currently have five phone numbers. Google Voice sounds like a great solution to "voice mail message scavanger hunting". I would be pleased as punch to be a test case for this.

I love how Google is a software company that doesn't sell software... They give it all away for free, and only make money from advertising.

I've been dying to try this out. I think I would keep my regular cell number for friends/family but give this number to other people..eventually transitioning it.
