Writing on the Walls

When inspiration strikes, you want to capture the moment. And nothing encourages collaboration like a whiteboard. Better still is a whiteboard that’s right beside your favorite thinking spot, so you can be creative without making space for a clunky, institutional whiteboard. Just named to Inc. magazine’s “30 under 30” list of America’s Coolest Young Entrepreneurs, Babson College students John Goscha, Morgan Newman and Jeff Avallon were tossing around business ideas when they began brainstorming about… brainstorming. Wouldn’t it be nice if they weren’t always running out of space on their whiteboard? What if they could just write all over the walls? That’s how the trio came up with the concept for IdeaPaint, a water-based paint that creates a dry-erase surface anywhere you want one. You can paint a whiteboard on the walls of your home office, or turn a playroom toy box or kitchen cabinet into an instant whiteboard. It’s also great for schools and corporate offices – anywhere you want to express your creativity. IdeaPaint can be applied like chalkboard paint, but you get to skip the dusty mess of chalk. The IdeaPaint CREATE line is easy to apply and is a low VOC, low odor product which cures in only four days. A big part of the development of IdeaPaint was coming up with an environmentally friendly solution. Hitting on the right formula took a few years of chemistry work, but the result is a durable coating that works as well as a porcelain whiteboard and is just a fraction of the cost. Plus, nothing beats being able to write all over the walls without getting into any trouble.

Great product and terrific Grommet. A little put off by the high price but then considered what a white board would cost. Did a little research and found a quart of Rustoleum "Dry Erase" paint for roughly $25. What is the difference between your product and the Rustoleum to support your much higher price?

I love that this is called 'Idea Paint' because it truly will set free big ideas!

    I have some questions:

    1. As far as Dry Erase Markers are concerned, is there any specific brand that works better than another?

    2. If you need to paint over it are there any special considerations?

Great question about the difference between IdeaPaint & Rustoleum. IdeaPaint CRE-8 is one of the highest performing dry-erase surfaces on the market and comes with a 5-year warranty. When you write on it with a dry erase marker, you will be able to erase it cleanly every time no matter how long you leave marks on the surface. This is not the case for Rustoleum. Additionally, IdeaPaint is currently being used in places like Microsoft, the CIA and many schools around the country.

IdeaPaint is currently being used in schools, daycare centers and homes around the country. Like with any other paint, I'd recommend when painting a child's bedroom that you properly ventilate the room during and after application.

My sister is a teacher and told me that teachers have to request white boards, since they are quite expensive. Not every teacher has their own white board -- Idea Paint could solve a ton of those issues. John told us that you can even paint Idea Paint over a black board. Tell all the teachers you know to spread the word about Idea Paint -- less expensive than a white board!!

When I was running operations for a 120-person software development company, I moved everyone to the new headquarters. One of the first things we considered was painting project room walls with IdeaPaint. The cost of IdeaPaint is definitely comparable to that of whiteboards, but the bonus is flexibility of shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, our contract did not allow for us to paint walls ourselves (heavily unionized building), so we just chose to spend considerable money on whiteboards. Too bad, since IdeaPaint would have been a better choice.

Great looking product. I've looked at the rustoleum product in the past, but the reviews have always been terrible - you have to use at least 3 coats, it's hard to work with, and most importantly, it does not erase! I've heard of Idea Paint, but wasn't sure whether it would be the same as Rustoleum. Based on the the Grommet review, it looks like Idea has solved these problems. I'll gladly pay more for 3x less work and a product that actually does what it says. Thanks for the find Grommet! I'm actually looking forward to painting???

Sometimes when you rush, you make mistakes. Yesterday I used a Sharpie (!) on our Idea Paint at Daily Grommet. Darn those pens for looking so much alike. I tried to use cleaners to get it off and they didn't work. Markus from Idea Paint saved me and shared a tip for all of you who may make such a mistake in the future. You simply mark over the permanent ink with a Dry Erase Marker. Something in the Dry Erase Marker will break down the permanent ink and you can use the eraser to wipe it away. It is a miracle. Thanks for such a useful tip, Marcus. Good to know.

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team
    10/1/2010 10:51 AM

@Kim - we haven't personally projected an image on the painted surface. The texture of the wall under the paint is the thing that may affect the clearness of the picture. Our advice is to project your image onto the wall you're considering and see how it displays. If you are using the white paint, the projected colors will be even more vibrant. I am also sending a quick note to Marcus to get his feedback!

@Paula - It's definitely glossy - that's what makes it nice and smooth to write on and quick/easy to erase!

I love that IdeaPaint is available for the home. I have a whole wall in my home office that is screaming for this!

Great work, IdeaPaint team. And congratulations on being named as one of Inc. Magazine's 30 Under 30.

@Heather L I had the exact same reaction to the "This" and "That" packaging you see in the video. It made me chuckle. And I like the confidence IdeaPaint displayed by not doing the "same old same old" as other companies.

Love the idea that it's eco-friendly. Sounds like no VOCs? But where are the eco-friendly dry erase pens? We need those quickly to go with the paint!

You don't explicitly state anywhere (that I can find) whether this is a no-VOC paint, a low-VOC paint, etc. Can you please let me know? Is there a MSDS sheet available? Thanks.

@Marcus: Hey Marcus, saw your product on "How I made my millions" and loved it. My roommates and I used it to make a scoreboard in our game room. I manage a wide range of online marketing for a software company in NY and love coming up with cool promotions. I put together some ideas for a Social Media viral video promotion that I believe would work out nice for IdeaPaint.

If you'd like to hear my idea please shoot me an email! I really got inspired by your product!

We are having this installed in our conference room and were wondering if you have experimented with projecting images on the painted surface from a projector. Is the image clear or distorted?

    Hey, 2 Questions

    1. Do you guys ship to ireland and if not, can i trust amazon in terms of product shelf life etc.

    2. Will the paint work on a loft ceiling about 30 degrees off flat?

    Cheer, Darragh

    Hi Katherine,

I own a design and renovation company for homes and offices here in Singapore.

I believed Ideapaint whiteboard solution would have fantastic potential in this region.

I would therefore like to explore if Ideapaint would consider setting up a distributorship for Ideapaint products for ASIA.

I look forward to your reply.

    Warmest Regards,

    David Yeo

I wonder of there is a difference in this and the dry erase paint rustoleum has.

I know rustoleum only has white and this is in a few colours. Can anyone tell me the difference. I have many walls I did in white and would love to do more, but the price difference is huge.

How can I become a Distributor for your product. I live on GUAM which is a territory of the United States. I am interested in shipping fees Cost/Insurance/Freight (CIF) to GUAM. If prices are affordable, I would like to become the sole/exclusive distributor for Guam and the Western Pacific Region. There are many "Ideas" running thru my head already, I would like to get started with my marketing plan if all is approved.

Please E-Mail me your thoughts or process to get a small business opportunity started. I await your response/reply.

    Respectfully
