It's Sew Easy

A ribbon here, some ruffles there, even the flash of rhinestones — click, click, click and your fashionable tween has just designed a hip fall outfit that’s got her name all over it. Best yet, she can actually wear her custom creation and take pride in her own handiwork. Fashion Playtes is an interactive clothing design website that’s perfect for girls ages 6 to 12 who have a creative flair and love fashion. In a few simple steps, young designers pick garments, select sizes and choose colors. Then comes the really fun part: embellishing the tops, skirts, dresses or jackets they’ve selected. Our tween tester, Vanessa (shown on the left), designed her own virtual wardrobe, stored the pieces in her online closet, and then selected one skirt to be delivered right to her doorstep – and she loved every minute of it. Fashion Playtes founder, Sarah McIlroy, (on the right) was inspired by the clothing projects she remembers doing with her mom as a young girl. She’s given the process a modern twist so that her daughter and other young girls can have that same thrill with a few simple clicks. Modern technology lets Sarah’s co-founder Mary Beth Tirrell, manage the sewing workroom, so these high quality garments arrive just-as-designed, in no time. Tween gifts can be a challenge: Fashion Playtes makes it simple. The clothes are made from quality cotton/spandex, jersey or denim, and they look as great as they are fun to make. Let the dazzling begin. * Photo of Sarah Mcllroy and Mary Beth Tirrell courtesy of Charlene Peters, Marblehead Reporter

I’m thrilled to be here today. Jules Pieri, the CEO and founder of the Daily Grommet, is one of my favorite people. I’ve known her for well over a year now and it’s been wonderful watching this business and your community grow.

As a young girl, I designed most of my clothes and my mother would graciously (and very patiently) make them for me. I recall the sense of pride and confidence I felt in wearing something that I had designed and knew was totally unique. We have launched FashionPlaytes where we give girls the tools and the platform to be designers. Girls can design clothes and accessories that they can actually wear. We’ve received wonderful feedback from girls on the website and have fabulous testimonials from parents on the quality of the garments. I’m looking forward to seeing you on FashionPlaytes.com, to your designs, comments, and feedback.

This looks like a cute gift. Do you have gift certificates and in what denominations? If I wanted to gift a $50 gift, what would that buy? Thanks

I only wish I had girls of my own to do this with them. I would be willing to host a party at my house for some of my friend's girls to design their own clothes on Fashion Playtes. I'm a huge fan!

We've had a lot comments on bringing in products for women! We are launching a great belt next week -- a gorgeous ribbon style belt that you can customize with rhinestone buckles. We're offering it in women and girls sizes. Maybe in the future we'll have a whole line for ladies...

A friend passed along the link to fashionplaytes to me because I have two girls. My 11 year old just finished making her first outfit and is looking forward to making more. She also looks forward to buying a gift certificate for her best friend, so that she can not only design her own fashion, but then be able to purchase it as well. Thanks for such a creative outlet!
