Letterpress Finesse

Night Owl’s eco-chic note cards and journals will have you handwriting your to-do lists and reviving the lost art of personal letter writing in no time. That’s how special these unconventional paper goods are. Night Owl is a labor of love for Alan and Jennifer, a pair of designers who used to moonlight together making invitations, logos and letterhead for friends before they jumped into the stationery business full-time. Today it’s a real family affair — Jennifer’s parents moved to Alabama to help with the growing business, and Alan’s dad runs the letterpress. Many of Night Owl’s cards and journals are made from sustainably harvested yellow birch wood. Yes, wood. The natural grain of the birch veneer makes the perfect backdrop for their hand-pressed graphics, which draw inspiration from Swedish and American folk art. The aesthetic is whimsical, but it also has a modern flair that keeps the designs feeling contemporary. You can send your regards with a folksy owl on a flowering branch, or dash off a thank-you note with a delicate trellis print. The only hard part is choosing which critters and creations to send first. We heard about Night Owl from a bookbinder, Julia Elmer. “I don’t always find paper items I really love, and Night Owl has won me over,” Julia says. “The bark paper journals are amazing… a true Grommet!” We couldn’t agree more.

I'm Jennifer Tatham co-owner of Night Owl Paper Goods. My business partner, Alan Henderson & I are super excited that Daily Grommet has selected our company for a daily feature. We'd like to thank one of our biggest fans, Julia, for writing the most lovely letter to submit our work to the Daily Grommet. "Thank you Julia!"

At Night Owl Paper Goods we say • Thank You • Happy Birthday • Congratulations • Happy Holidays • I love you • all in a style we like to call "modern yet folksy". Both Alan & I illustrate our entire line of greeting cards, journals, jotters and totes by intermixing our critter & pattern design styles. We're very fortunate to have created a company and product line that combines everything we love :: design + printing + writing + paper + wood + nature + the environment + friends + family. We hope you'll be able to take the time to visit our website and get to know our products and share them with your friends and family!

I'll be around all day to answer any questions you might have. I'll go ahead and answer a very common question right now ... "Can I actually write on a wood card?" The answer is simply, Yes indeedie! You can write using a gel pen, ball point pen or a pencil. Colored pencils are even super fantastic!

Just remember, everyday is a lovely day for correspondence!

I send out at least 10 greeting cards a week to keep in touch with some elderly friends and with friends across the globe who don't use email frequently. The charm of "real" mail will never be lost, and I am proud to send Night Owl greetings to my friends and loved ones. I've already stocked up on their Christmas cards. The quality is unmatched.

I am a snail mail letter writer and appreciate nice stationery. Due to printing on wood, are your notes heavier to send than a standard stamp?

    To answer a question...

Wood cards cost no more to mail than a regular card : )

AND our postcards even mail for the postcard rate of 28¢ - they zip right through the mail with ease. Hooray!

Daily Grommet, you are so right...to open a notecard of elegant wood is so stopping and so refreshing that it becomes an instant keepsake. I, too, fell in love with Night Owl and immediately ordered custom business cards for my new business. Every single person comments on them and "oooohs" and "ahhhs" abound. Kudos to Night Owl! And to DG for a great find!

Cards are great gifts, especially for people who don't really need more "stuff". They're little artworks that you can display, file away, or even discard if you don't have room for them. People really appreciate getting nice, physical cards. I'm always on the lookout for particularly interesting and cool ones. These look great; I just ordered a bunch.
