See and Be Seen

Winter is here , which means lots of evening or early morning exercise will be done under the cloak of darkness. To help you stay safe, we like GoMotion gear with built-in lighting that lets you see and be seen in the dark. Company founders Jonathan Craig and Bob Hunnewell came up with the idea for GoMotion when they couldn’t find an effective, comfortable alternative to the reflective vests and headlamps that many athletes use for evening exercise. A few years ago, Jonathan mounted an incandescent lens onto a hand-carved wood chest plate and tied it to his torso using a rope harness – this was to be the first prototype for GoMotion’s wearable body-lighting gear! Designed for runners and walkers, the Street Runner LiteVest is made from lightweight mesh material and has an LED light positioned at chest height so you can see where you’re going, and two flashing red lights mounted on the rear so you can be seen from the back. The Sport Runner LiteBelt is made from the same breathable mesh fabric and also has LED lights mounted front and back. Both options let you adjust the intensity, width and direction of the front light with pockets for your cell phone and keys. Strap on a light vest or belt and you’re ready to run.

Hello DGr's. I'm Jonathan Craig, co-founder of GoMotion, and great to be here with you today. It's super to be involved with such an innovative purveyor of info like the Daily Grommet talking about our stuff as the days go on. At the heart of it, we are about enabling people to stay active longer throughout the year, comfortably, safely, while avoiding the dreaded treadmill.

So, let's talk about it. I hear a lot of people say, "Oh, I stop running (or walking) outside in the fall because it gets dark too early/late." We're looking to change that, and get people out and active, no matter the time of day or available light. Whether walking your dog, training for a marathon, or speed hiking, wearing a hi-output LED light on your body versus on your head or in your hand has a lot of advantages. I look forward to the conversation.

A brilliant idea. How often do you have to change the batteries?

Thank you! If you leave the StreetRunner or SportRunner on the brightest setting continuously, the 3 x AA batteries will last about 8 hrs. On low, they go over 30 hours. You can also use AA Lithium batteries which last @ twice as long, or go with rechargeable AA batteries.

This is one of those items that if you need it, you KNOW you need it because you live with that unsettling feeling throughout your journey at the edge of the road that the next driver isn't going to see you in time or that you aren't going to see unevenness in the road in time. What a great product for functionality and peace of mind.

Doing this video made me remember that when I was pregnant I couldn't work out like I used to, so I would walk outside. I walked daily in the morning before work and so often in the fall/winter it was dark . -- Not safe, but I felt like I had to keep walking to feel good. GoMotion gear would have been so helpful and has numerous uses.

funny you are showing this today. i just went for a late afternoon bike ride yesterday and by the time i got closer to my house it was pretty dark. i usually don't ride at night, so i don't have the equipment on my bike, but this would be good to keep in bike pack, just in an emergency case, if it gets dark while i'm riding. good idea

Yeh - I've even been caught out on a post-dinner walk this fall with my family when it got dark much quicker/sooner than expected. Seems to always catch you off guard this time of year, and the hammer really drops after the Nov 1st time change.

Vest is pretty darn well-priced for something with that many features.

Thanks - yes they work fine in the the rain. All our electronics (lights & battery box) are tested and rated at IPX-3, which is anything short of full submersion. I tell people you can stand in the shower with it on and be fine. I like the Halloween aspect for sure. It's great b/c the beam is quite wide (will light up a 2 lane road 20' feet in front of you), so it's easy to share the light. Works great for dog walking as well.

Does anybody know if the sport runner lite belt is durable and comfortable enough for an advanced runner who does most of their training in the dark of morning? thanks

Mark - yes, absolutely. The SportRunner works great for daily runs. Charlie Engle used the SportRunner, & placed 4th, at this year's Badwater 135 (as in miles, & dubbed the "toughest footrace in the world"). I use one regularly as well (although not quite as hard as Charlie :) ). You can see on our website, just below the Daily Grommet post, were we have several comments from runners.
