Capelet Crusading

Chicago native Kate Robertson fell in love with Peru when she was there with the Peace Corps. She came to know and appreciate not just the artisans, but the versatility and eco-friendliness of Alpaca. Clothing made from Alpaca fibers are soft, warm, incredibly durable, pill-free and hypo-allergenic. These relatives of llamas are indigenous to Peru and can be raised with less impact on the earth than competing materials, plus they can be shorn without harm to the animals. Mayu was born of Kate’s desire to bring hand-knit Peruvian products to a larger market, and is a proud member of the Fair Trade Federation. That means the company is committed to sustainable environmental practices and fair wages for the artisans involved. This hooded shawl we’re offering today comes in four different two-color combinations, and while the story behind it is a good one, the pure utility and beauty of this piece (not to mention that it’s one-size-fits-all) makes it a no-brainer. It’ll work with a fancy dress as well as with jeans and T-shirt, and it’s warm enough to layer like a cardigan or substitute for a jacket, depending on the weather. It’s the perfect gift for anyone — assuming you can part with it. — Mi

I am delighted that Daily Grommet has chosen to put its spotlight on Mayu's products and tell you the story behind them. Since serving in the Peace Corps, my mission has been to give the women in the community where I served a chance at earning a living wage while doing what they love, knitting. If you don't already own something knit from Alpaca fiber, you will be delighted by how soft and warm it is and the fact that it will last a lifetime (and no, it does not pill!). You will absolutely love these 2-colored capelets not only because they are super cute and the perfect addition to any outfit, but also because your purchase will help a family in the Andes Mountains of Peru. I am here to answer any questions that you have.

Adorable! And I also love that the capelet isn't so long that you can't do anything with your hands. Great design and colors too. I bet they feel wonderful.

I think my teenage daughter would really like this. She is very stylish and this is quite different. She loves hooded anything!

Thanks for checking out Mayu's 2-colored capelets! These are one of our most popular accessories. They are super cute and make a great addition to any wardrobe. I promise, if you wear one out of the house, you will receive many comments! Nobody will have a hoodie like this one. I live in my black/white hoodie year round (except of course for July and August) because it is so versatile.

The Alpaca fiber is of the highest quality. You won't believe how soft and warm this hoodie is. Also, it will last a lifetime. It will not pill like cashmere does. Lastly, the Alpaca is eco-friendly so you can be "green" and "stylish" at the same time!

Your purchases help support a wonderful group of artisans in the Andes Mountains of Peru that I met while in the Peace Corps.

Good deal? Yup, I think so. Oh, and don't forget your holiday gift needs. Mayu's hoodies make one-of-a-kind gifts that won't be forgotten.

Let me know if you have questions or comments.

    Thanks,

    Kate

Hooray for this Grommet! I lived in Ecuador for several years, and every time I used to go to the Sierra (around Quito), I used to buy alpaca sweaters to keep me warm. This capelet is way more stylish! Alpaca wool is very warm, and alpacas do create sustainable livelihoods for many, many countrysiders in the Andean region. My favourite place to stay in the world is a hacienda near Quito with a group of alpacas who live there and come in every night for carrots. They are so beautiful!

@Julia Thanks for putting more color and context around this story. I want the GPS coordinates for the hacienda. It sounds idyllic.
