Ice Creams

Simply Splendid

Warning: Once you try this ice cream, you might never again be satisfied by plain old regular ice cream. It truly is splendid, like no other ice cream we’ve ever tasted.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams are the handiwork of Jeni Bauer, who earned her culinary stripes in a local French bakery and fell for the pure European flavors she discovered there. That experience helped define the sophisticated, exotic flavors her business
creates — like the irresistible Salty Caramel, which was inspired by the bakery’s traditional French caramels, made from slowly burnt sugars with cream and a little salt. Aficionados have been known to make pilgrimages to Jeni’s hometown just for the Salty Caramel. We’re just as smitten with Jeni’s complex and unexpected Cherry Lambic Sorbet, which perfectly melds sweet and sour, effervescent lambic beer on the mid palate. Just thinking about it gets the mouth watering.

Jeni’s uses only local, organic products, including milk from grass-fed cows. Each batch is hand-packed and shipped from Columbus, Ohio — where longtime fans like Daily Grommet reader Nancy Beja have been savoring and raving about Jeni’s ice cream for years (Nancy even wrote a letter to Jeni on our behalf. We’d been trying for months to share this story with you and Nancy helped to properly introduce us to Jeni. Thanks, Nancy!) All of Jeni’s treats are delivered deeply frozen, so they’re easy to ship (in a pack of nine flavors) just in time for a decadent holiday dinner or to your favorite food-lover for an unforgettable gift. One bite and you’ll be hooked. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

  • Joannie

My name is Joannie and I'm the communications person on our marketing team. I've worked for Jeni's since I graduated high school and for 4 years I alternated my time scoopin' in the summer and finishing college the rest of the year. I spent some months making ice cream in Jeni's kitchen before stepping into my new role as the company wordsmith.

I look forward to answering your questions and talking ice cream with you all!

It looks like those are hand written labels. is that possible?

Your eyes do not deceive you - all of our labels are handwritten right before we hand pack our pints in our kitchen.

It's possible because we make our ice creams in small batches. Plus, after you've written Salty Caramel enough times, you start to get the hang of it.

Didn't Jeni get started in a market like 5 or 10 years ago? I feel like I saw a special about her on Food Network. Same Jeni?

No problem, Toby. Shipping ice cream is our specialty. We ship our ice cream in an insulated box packed with plenty of dry ice.

I can't wait to try this. I too consider myself an icecream connoisseur, - having scooped on and off through the years. Even in this economy, I refuse to compromise on a good quality icecream.

This is not any ice cream you can buy in the supermarket or even at the local ice cream shop. I also am a self-professed ice cream expert. I live near a dairy farm and thought that was the best until I tried this. Jeni's has no equals. It truly earns the description of gourmet, premium and the best! I still can taste the goat cheese/fig flavor... like nothing else. Wendy here at Grommet says she has dreamed about the pistachio ice cream....

How exciting to get this Grommet in my email box! I live in Columbus and have been eating Jeni's ice cream since she started selling it at The North Market. It truly is the most delicious most creative ice cream I have ever eaten. I have long said that Jeni deserves to be famous because of her ice cream. It's that good and Jeni is as nice of a person as she is talented.

We were so lucky to be asked by the Grommet team to try some of this ice cream. It is amazing. It is far better than any ice cream I've ever tried.

One more question about shipping...I'm going to be out of town on Thanksgiving Day. Will it last for two days in dry ice (or alternatively can I request delivery on the day after Thanksgiving)?

I'm laughing that you've got your copy of Vogue right there, ready for you to snap this photo, Katherine - I'm so impressed.

I have to say that my favorite part of tasting Jeni's was mixing the flavors. My favorite combo was a bite of the totally intense Dark Chocolate paired with a bite of the extra-tart Cranberry Royale Sorbet (both in the Thanksgiving Collection). It was like eating the most decadent truffle (and, unlike Wendy, I AM a huge dessert fan!).

Drew - your best bet is to order it by 12pm Monday, Nov. 23 and it will arrive by Wednesday. After that, the earliest you'll get it is the following week. UPS is closed on Thanksgiving.

Where do you live? Some places (like Chicago, some cities in MI) arrive in 1 day ...

Jeni - I was lucky enough to attend a party in NYC where your dark chocolate was served. It was the most amazing chocolate i've ever tasted. Can you reveal a little about how you make it?

  • Jeni
    11/20/2009 4:00 PM

Love to. We call it our Darkest Chocolate because it's made with so, so much dark chocolate! We melt down pieces of dark chocolate, then we can mix it with extra dark cocoa and add it to our cream.

This flavor takes a lot of time and work, but it's so worth it. It's like eating brownie batter.

i'm reading about your holiday flavors - yum! can you please tell us about the inspiration for them?

  • Jeni
    11/20/2009 4:16 PM

Yes. When I was brainstorming holiday flavors this summer, it seemed everywhere I looked was Scandinavia! From a long-forgotten National Geographic article about the forestry of Norway to a slew of new Ikea furniture for our new office - my head was in Scandinavia! Finally, an old friend is from Norway, and her stories of holiday traditions (and desserts!) pulled me in.

The flavors are all about warmth - cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, cranberries, almonds - yum. I hope you get a chance to try a few.

I was lucky enough to get the 'inside scoop' on this one. I sent an assortment to a good friend for her birthday. They all sounded so yummy that her kids begged hre to try them. The result? An ice cream 'taste testing' for breakfast!!! Salty Caramel and Thai Chili were their favorites. Great gift...especially for a foodie. I'm ordering some for Thanksgiving so I get a chance to try!

  • Steve
    11/20/2009 8:10 PM

@Steve....we'll get you an answer. @All. Just past midnight, Saturday AM. Cleaning up from a cooking class that was in my house. I shared some Jeni's, to rave reviews. A little taste of three flavors was perfect after a very filling Spanish meal. I know this is going to go over really well with our foodie friends in NJ at Thanksgiving.

@Steve Sorry to leave you hangin' there. Alas, I think you'll either have to suffer through ordering and eating the regular size pints, or take a road trip to Columbus to visit one of Jeni's ice cream shops. I'm sure they must have industrial sized boxes of taster spoons or paddles at the ready.

  • Larry
    11/21/2009 10:45 PM

Perfect selection as Thanksgiving is upon us. I wish we could pick flavors and quantities since I'm less of an exotic flavors guy and more of a plain vanilla guy - both literally and figuratively.

  • Katherine

    11/22/2009 9:04 AM

@Larry, I think that this selection might just be what it takes to add a little spice to your vanilla ways! The collections we are offering were hand selected to provide the best experience of Jeni's Ice Creams. However, Jeni's does give you the ability to choose your own flavors at their site at so you can put together your own six pack of flavors for the same price.

We received this e-mail and with the sender's permission had to share it here. What a great experience with Jeni's Ice Creams. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience Chuck!

I ordered the Thanksgiving 6-pack of flavors a few days ago and they arrived on time and well packaged. We brought them to a pre-Thanksgiving dinner last night and served all six of them for dessert with a big spoon in each container. About a dozen people passed them around and enjoyed tasting each one. By the end we had killed two flavors and had little left in the remaining four. I took a vote of the top two choices for each person and there was absolutely no consistency with no two people choosing the same two flavors as their top choices. We concluded that this dessert was not only delicious but a wonderful way to keep everyone engaged at the table after a great dinner. Nothing but accolades. - Chuck

My wife Tracey ordered Jeni's to bring to Thanksgiving Dinner. We were a little worried on the arrival...but it came just in time...and frozen! Everyone tried the various flavors and loved them. New Englander's love their ice cream and the overall response was Jeni's is a GREAT GROMMET. Thanks Jeni!

I received my Grommet 9 Pack today and, while super excited about the ice cream, am really disappointed with the shipping. I was home at lunchtime and the package had not yet been delivered...I got home between 6:15 and 6:30pm, so it arrived sometime during that time frame. It appears that the dry ice is COMPLETELY gone, and at least one of the ice cream containers had leaked. There is melted ice cream on several containers, and the consistency of more than half is very soupy (you can squeeze the container and it gives like there is liquid inside). I did not open any, but put them right in the freezer. Hope this saves them and the ice cream is still good.

@Pamela: It does sound like something didn't go right with the shipment of your package and her name was probably Hurricane Irene. Someone from our customer support team will look into it and get back to you directly. This ice cream is so fabulous, you definitely need to try it in perfect condition.

I would love to order this for Christmas, but not for Thanksgiving delivery. Is there a way to put an advanced order in for that delivery?

I bought the Jeni's ice cream cookbook in the summer, after studying the ice cream cookbooks in Borders.. this one was clearly the best, with the best recipes and the best pics. :) BRING ON THE LAVENDER!!

@christina sprague: If your daughter has to be hooked on something, this is a yummy good one! ;0) The minimum order is 4 pints because the carrier requires that the containers are packed snugly to prevent rolling around, cracking or melting on their way to its destination.

To say this ice cream is delish is so understated! My son and his family sent a pack to my husband for his birthday, he loved it, ( what little he got of it), somebody, no idea who ( wink wink) little by little ate most of it before hubby could. Musta been that darn ice cream monster! I have it from a very reliable source (that ice cream monster) that this ice cream is the best she - oops, I mean he has ever tried. A good cup of coffee and a little Jeni's and ahhhhhh, pure heaven.
