Flexible Water Bottle

Flat-Out Functional

Has thy cup been runneth over? Nope, that's what this sleek water bottle is supposed to look like when it's empty.

The Vapur water bottle is designed to collapse when there's nothing in it. It's made from flexible plastic (BPA-free), so you can roll it, fold it or flatten it until you're ready for a refill. That means no more clunky water bottles taking up precious space in your purse, backpack or briefcase. When it's full, the Vapur bottle stands upright.

It's a simple idea, executed smartly by Vapur co-founders Jason
Carignan, David Czerwinski and Brent Reinke. They came up with a chic, irresistibly squeezable solution to a common conundrum: How to drink more water when you don't want to buy disposable plastic bottles or lug around unwieldy canisters. The Vapur bottle makes a great gift for hikers, bikers, campers, kids, business travelers -- anyone who hydrates on the go. Like Daily Grommet reader and outdoor enthusiast Molly Ruffle, who told us about Vapur. We're flat-out smitten with this discovery. Read More Read Less

Grommet Launch Conversation

  • Brent

My name is Brent Reinke. I am a boring lawyer by day and an entrepreneurial business owner by night! I launched Vapur with my two friends Jason Carignan and David Czerwinski earlier this year. We have set out to build a truly sustainable company from the ground-up — one that can make a real difference for our communities and our planet.

We are so excited that Daily Grommet has chosen to feature Vapur as Today’s Grommet! Vapur is quite simply the most portable refillable water bottle on the planet. And by making tap water more portable, we hope to make bottled water obsolete. We would love to hear your ideas, feedback, tips, stories, anything! We welcome you to join the conversation!

    Hi Brent,

Brilliant idea at a great Grommett price. Had two thoughts to share.

    1. Why not wholesale to promotional marketing companies - and add their logos to the bottle? It's a multi-billion dollar business.

    2. Email me if you currently offer this, and can get dark blue bottles - may have a client for you.

Hi Chris. Yes we do have a co branding program which has been put together to address this very market. We have been inundated with inquiries from various organizations both nationallly an internationally with whom we are working. Happy to discuss this with you further.

Kim. Great question. We knew this would be an important issue for people, so we designed Vapur to be dishwasher safe. You can simply place it on the top rack of your dishawasher and have it cleaned that way. Many of our Vapur customers and friends and family have been using their Vapur for weeks and cleaning them in their dishwashers. Works really well.

  • Katherine

@Chelle: It's not a problem. You can clean them by hand by putting a dab of dish soap inside and then rinse out with hot water.

I am SO SICK of water bottles taking up all my cabinet space and rolling around hitting me in the head every time I reach up to grab one!! Love how these store and stack up so neatly. Vapur - this is a huge problem solver for me, and I'm sure so many others out there.

Jeanne, could not agree with you more and thanks for the nice compliment! We have had so many people thank us for designing a reusable water bottle that is not only incredibly portable when empty, but also takes up very little space when stored. My wife and I have three kids of my own and we know what a pain having a lot rigid and plastic water bottles can be when trying to store them. Our kids also like how they feel when full of water :)

Hi Mary. Important questions. Vapur is both BPA and pthalate free. The inside of the Vapur bottle is made from FDA approved BPA (and pthalate free)free plastic. The plastic is bonded to 2 layers of nylon for strength and durability. Vapur is also made in the good old USA

does just putting it in the dishwasher get the inside clean? Does the mouth piece come off?

  • Brent
    Brent – Special Guest
    12/3/2009 1:46 PM

Kim. The mouth piece is a twist on/off cap and does come off. Washing a Vapur in the top rack of a dishwasher does get it clean. For those that want to clean their Vapur even further, we suggest you place a couple drops of dish soap in your Vapur and rinse with warm water. Hope that helps answer your question.

  • Marcy
    12/3/2009 3:22 PM

I carry a water bottle everyday to constantly hydrate and I love that Vapurs are oh so fashionable and collapse. I freeze my water bottles since I like cold water and it's great to know that these with stand the freezer too.

  • Brent
    Brent – Special Guest
    12/3/2009 4:27 PM

Marcy. You can freeze your Vapur. So what most people do rather than try and place ice in their Vapur bottles is they fill it and free it over night. As we pointed out in the video, another thing that works great is to fill your Vapur half way, freeze it and then fill the rest with water. It really keeps the water nice and cold. It's a little difficult to put ice in the Vapur because of the small opening, but were working on that too with a new top design. Stay tuned :). The bottle "sweats" a little, but not anymore that a typical rigid reusable bottle.

Nick, glad to hear that you love the idea behind Vapur. We believe that we have come up with a very simple (and also fashionable) solution to the huge problem of plastic water bottles. We like to think that Vapur is "changing the shape" of the bottled water industry. Without going into a technical discussion of the plastic, the inner layer of the Vapur is a plastic material that is FDA approved for direct food contact and as mentioned earlier is also BPA free.

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team

@Stratton_bear - they look like they function very similarly. Vapur is made of two layers of nylon which give it great durability and has a built in carabiner so that it is attachable. It also comes in these fun and appealing colors!

@Nina - Brent addressed this question and this is what he said: "The mouth piece is a twist on/off cap and does come off. Washing a Vapur in the top rack of a dishwasher does get it clean. How much do these bottles "sweat". I'm worried about them making my surrounding stuff wet.

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team
    5/11/2010 10:10 AM

@Kelly - I have never noticed sweating at all but I don't usually have cold, cold water. I just did a trial, putting the Vapur bottle in the freezer to make the water inside extra cold. There IS a light layer of condensation on the outside of the bottle as you'd expect, but it's not beading up and rolling down the outside, just a light layer.

@Emma, interesting idea! I think getting the yogurt into the bottle in the first place would be the challenging part. Another option in a smaller container would be the GoToob squeezable tubes.

  • Emma
    5/13/2010 8:24 PM

Thanks Katherine... yes, I've checked out the GoToobs. The appealing aspects of the Vapur bottle is the size (my kids will down 3 oz of yogurt in about 2 seconds) and the "suckability". I worry that the GoToobs aren't designed to be drunk out of. I'm hoping if the yogurt isn't too viscous, it should be relatively easy to "pour" into the opening. I'm going to order some and will write back with a "yogurtability" rating. If they don't work for yogurt, at least I'll have new water bottles!

Emma - please do stop back and let us know if it works!

    5/17/2010 3:20 PM

The first few days with the Vapur bottles have been good for the grownups and a little tough for my kids. I love the shape, weight and flexibility of the bottle. And, it is pretty easy to wash and very easy to fill. I did make a smoothie for my 3 year old and it was very easy to pour into the Vapur bottle. I've also frozen one half-filled, a great suggestion.

But... I'm finding the top a bit problematic. My 3 and 6 year olds both have trouble opening it and, more importantly, shutting it all the way. We've had quite a few spills. While I physically have no problem shutting it, it is easy to leave it a bit open accidentally, and I spilled water all over my desk as a result. I wonder if some kind of valve is possible to prevent spills?

If I can train my kids to open and close it properly, I will have found a way to make my own yogurt in a tube... Very exciting.

Any chance that smaller sizes (like 8 oz) will come out?

    5/17/2010 4:37 PM

@Emma - thank you for this feedback! I'm forwarding it on to Brent. I agree, closing the lid is tough for kids because you can't just push down on it, you have to provide your own resistance and that may be a difficult concept for kids. I'm so used to it now that I'd forgotten about that at the beginning. I'm glad to hear that it has worked for your smoothie challenge!

I'm considering buying this product. It looks like it will be perfect for our needs. I have an issue with these types of caps, though. The cover will get lost very soon since it isn't attached. Do they come with flip top caps? The Poland Spring bottles used to come with removable covers for the spouts, but now they make attached covers, which I find much more practical, especially with little kids.

Do you know when the new models with bigger sizes is coming out? Maybe they can consider a flip top for their next release?

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team
    7/14/2010 11:02 PM

@Ester - The cover isn't a necessary part of the cap. They don't have a flip cap, but I will forward your suggestion! We'll let you know when the bigger size is available. Thanks for stopping by!

  • Ester
    7/14/2010 11:18 PM

Thanks for responding. I know, it just stays cleaner when it's covered. And since I read that they are considering new cap ideas, I though I'd throw that one out there. :)

I see they sell replacement caps on their site, so maybe I will order these bottles now and replace the caps if they make new styles.

I love seeing all of the great things you find and can't wait to open the daily email, when I see it in my inbox.

Today, I'm wondering how these Vapur bottles are different from Platypus bottles? I do like the fact that there's a clip. I had a Platypus bottle or two 10 or 15 years ago, and loved the fact that it was packable, so this is definitely a great concept. Perhaps it's just great minds thinking alike and coming up with a very similar idea, completely independently!

  • Georgia
    3/3/2011 2:41 PM

What is unique about this? The answer... Nothing. This is a rip off of a Platypus. I've seen this knock off brand at department stores before Christmas for $4.99 each. The Daily Grommet has let me down.

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team
    3/3/2011 3:15 PM

When we first launched this product back in 2009, I was one of the people who had never heard of this concept before. Platypus seems to have kept their product as a niche product in the outdoor industry and never really introduced it to a broader audience. I did ask Brent about how he thought of his product in regard to this similar product and he believed that there was demand for a product like this in the lifestyle market. They created their product with a broader audience in mind and he was right, demand for Vapur water bottles has been phenomenal.

I bought a 3-pack as a gift and also got a 3-pack for myself. The giftee promptly put hers to use with her husband and two teen boys on a trip to the Caribbean. The Vapur bottles traveled along clipped to their carry-on backpacks. Two flights there, two flights up, and a lot of use in between, and the bottles performed just great. They do a lot of back-and-forth travel and have very little space, so the fold-flat feature was perfect for them. They love the bottles.

What is the environmental impact of the disposal of this plastic? Does it biodegrade? We do not need anymore plastic in the world.

@Rose: It won't biodegrade, but face to face with other plastic water bottles it is a better environmental choice. This is what Vapur says: From design and manufacturing, to shipping and distribution, right through to consumer use, the environment is considered throughout each step of the Vapur life cycle. The flexible Anti-Bottle uses less energy to make and transport than rigid bottles. Manufactured in the United States, Vapur is lightweight and ships flat, providing dual environmental benefits - up to 5 times more bottles per shipment container means fewer trucks on the road, lower fuel consumption and reduced carbon emissions. The packaging has been designed to minimize paper, glue and scrap and is printed with soy ink on wind powered presses.

Vapur was recently awarded the 2010 FPA Silver Award for Sustainability & Environmental Achievement.

Will a 32oz bottle be available in the future? I'd like to purchase one to keep under the seat of my motorcycle for emergency situations. As you can imagine, space is at a premium so storage of actual water is out of the question but a collapsible water bottle and water purification tablets could do the trick. This appears to be what I'm looking for, just not big enough as the tablets purify a quart of water.

@Seth Diaz: This would be perfect for your situation. I have just spoken with Ashley at Vapur and although they do not have a larger size currently, they hope to come out with one down the road, ideally in 2012.

    Hello everyone,

thank you for this webside I love it and I did fantastical Christmas shopping.

Everyone loves all the gifts I have buy on your webside except one, the FLEXIBLE WATER BOTTLE.

It is excellent idea, but does not matter how many times I washed them by hands or dishwasher, I washed them with all diferent tipe of cleaners and vinegar, the bottles would smell as plastic and the water after 10-20min being in th bottles would smell and very strong tasted like a plastic.

So, I was disappointed with this product and I would recommend to anyone

@lucie prsalova: Thank you for stopping by to post your experience with this product. We love that you have had such great experiences with most of the products we feature and wish that this one would have worked out as well for you. I have Vapur bottles and am not bothered by a plastic smell or taste. I know that my sense of smell and taste aren't as sensitive as others, though. People who do have a sensitive taste, seem to prefer to drink their water out of glass. We have just featured a beautiful recycled glass water bottle that may be something you'll love. Concerned about keeping the bottles clean and safe when empty and all flat in a purse, car or gym bag for periods of time. Do they clean easily and is there any chance bacteria will grow inside the damp, flat bottle when not in use. I work for a water utility and it sounds like a good idea if we can be sure that they are also safe.

@Sandy August: You can hand wash them or wash them on a top rack of a dishwasher. You do need to make sure to wash them out and allow them to completely dry before storing them. Like anything, if you leave moisture in them for periods of time, bacteria can grow.

We received our Vapur bottles last week, and the kids have been using them constantly every since! We've also had many people (even random strangers in various places) asking us where we got the 'cool water bottles'! I know for a fact that our daughter is drinking more water than she was before, and they love the fact that the bottle can easily be stored by rolling it up and using the clip on their backpacks! Thanks! We'll definitely be ordering more as gifts for Christmas!

Hey there! This is a very cool idea. I just purchased two of them for my son, who is a Marine. He's set to deploy to Afghanistan in early November and I thought this would be a really great way for him to have water handy. I'll let you know his feedback when I give them to him later this month. Thanks for making them in the good old USA, too!!!

I like the concept and bought a few. I gave all away, but one which I kept for myself. I only had it a few days when it got caught one something and the clip tore through the grommet formed into the plastic. Now I have a bag I have to carry like any other water bottle. and the new plastic bottles roll up too.

@Layne: Oh no! The grommet area is fairly strong, this is not something that we've heard of happening before. If you purchased it from us we have a 30 day return policy and it sounds like you are well within that time period. If you're interested in fixing it, what you need is Sugru hacking putty to fix it (and nameless other projects you have around the house).

If you want to get the inside of this bottle CLEAN, just putting it in the dishwasher will not do will ONLY clean the outside. You have to, as with all bottles with narrow openings, use a long brush (can get at dollar store cheap) and warm water/soap. If "fuss" or pre-mold due to not cleaning well inside begins to grow, you can use warm water/soap and one drop of bleach, but rinse very well. We have to do this for our camel back packs. Great product otherwise, but cleaning is essential and should be stated clearly.

I got these about a month ago and promptly gave one to my 16yo daughter and 18yo son. I took the green one myself. We all love these, but I do have one criticism: the capacity is too small! 16 ounces is less than a bottle of soda. I find that I'm constantly filling mine. I would love it if you would make one that is at least 20 ounces (for train commuters like me) and maybe even a little bigger.

I've had these for a few months. I love the fact that they can collapse down to pocket-size when you're done drinking from them.

Too complaints make them items that I do not reach for frequently:

1.) As noted by another commentator, the capacity is small.

2.) When they are full, or close to full, there is no way to hold them when the top is open without squeezing the liquid out of the top. You *have* to learn to hold the bottle by the spout, simple as that.

There is a reason why containers for liquids have rigid sides. It is so that you can carry them and still have the liquid remain inside.

The launch day conversation has ended. Please direct further questions about this Grommet to our Community Experience Team.
