Modern Sound, Retro Appeal

So many sound systems today are cold, hard boxes that might sound ok but bring zero aesthetic appeal to a room. You may want to hide these plastic devices from sight. Not this one. The Vers 1.5R looks as great as it sounds. It’s got all the audio features you need, built into a handcrafted wooden cabinet with a gorgeous retro silhouette. The design idea was inspired by a classic 1955 Zenith radio that David Laituri has owned since he was 12. David (on the left) and Tim Trzepacz used to work together at Brookstone before they started Vers as an alternative to plastic-encased sound systems. The co-founders brainstormed a high-quality sound system that would look great and also be sustainable (each Vers system replaces 80% of what could be plastic with wood), and Vers was born. This small wonder packs an alarm clock, AM/FM radio, and iPod dock with a 15-watt speaker to deliver rich sound in a beautiful package. (For the audiophiles out there, it’s the 9mm-thick walls of the Vers cabinet that give it such accurate sound reproduction). It makes a great bedroom alarm clock, and we love the thought of it in the kitchen, family room, library or office. This is one sound system you won’t want to hide.

Mine was a wood 1945 Admiral tube radio that I bought at a garage sale for $7 when I was 12. I still have it, it’s followed me everywhere …and it works great! I’m David Laituri, co-founder and creative director of Vers – and we’re really excited to have our hand-crafted wood Vers 1.5R radio/alarm for iPod & iPhone featured here today.

We founded Vers to bring back quality sound, great design and a sense of environmental responsibility to a world increasingly filled with disposable plastic alternatives. I think you’ll agree, the Vers 1.5R is a great little sound system for any room. Wood is simply the best material – it looks wonderful, the sound it produces is warm and natural and it’s an amazingly renewable material; for every tree we use in production, we replant 100 through the Arbor Day Foundation and the US Forest Service to help restore park lands damaged by fire and other natural disasters.

I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have about our systems – drop me a line!

Dave, I was one of our testers for your sound system. It was in my house for months, in fact. I had to give it back for other people to test and I really miss it! Hint, hint, hint, to anyone looking to get me a Christmas gift. :)

i like the look of these. Are the piano black and white made of wood? They look like lacquer to me.

Mike - Yes, the cabinet of the the White and Black Piano versions are constructed the same way, with a 9 mm thick E1 MDF cabinet material, but with a polished paint finish rather then a hardwood veneer.

i like the looks of this. i notice there is a remote - good news...i wasn't sure from amazon.com. does the remote control the power (on / off)? this radio will sit on the opposite side of my home office, and the ability to power up / down would be an added bonus!

After seeing this grommet, I immediately put it on my Christmas list and lucky me, I got it! I love it, it's absolutely beautiful and goes with my mid-century furnishings, the sound is great, it plays + charges my iPhone, it keeps the correct time (my iHome lost 10 minutes a month!) and the brightness controls are great - the dimmest setting is just enough to see the time at night without being blindingly bright.

These guys are on to something old but forgotten. Just look at all the speaker cabinets of all the rock bands WOOD! look at them old big fat TV recordplayer sets that you see by the side of the road waiting for the junk man, WOOD ! that has always been the key ingredient of a great amplifying system The WOOD is what made good speakers sound great. I used to stop, take the speakers out of them when i saw them. The TV's were shot But usually the speakers are good SO I just built a new box for them. made set of 4 and sold them for $200. bucks or more just because they sounded so Good. AIn't that recycling?

Freddy - I think you are right! Good job of recycling. If you are going to listen to music you love, it only makes sense that it sounds the best it can.
