Like a Prius for Your Lashes

Mascara is a lot like a car. Stay with me a second. It can be flashy or understated, economical or extravagant, reliable or a big, flakey, let down. The Japanese have mastered the car thing, and now it seems they have mascara figured out, too. Fiberwig is a new kind of mascara from Imju, one of the leading cosmetics companies in Japan. It goes on smooth, but uses fiber to extend natural lashes, and it is developing a cult following because it’s just that good. Though they say it’s like fake lashes in a bottle, those of us who’ve road-tested it say it’s not that flashy. It just provides reliably long, clump-free, beautiful lashes, without flaking. In true hybrid form, you can use one coat for subtle, two coats for sexy. With no need to reapply, it’s surprisingly economical. The best part is, when it’s time to tuck in, you can wash it off without a wrestling match. Which kind of makes it the best everyday mascara we’ve ever used (no more pink and green tube for us).

Fiberwig is pretty amazing stuff. It's no exaggeration, the Daily Grommet team is totally hooked. What do you use and what do you like or dislike about it? (And has anyone else tried Fiberwig yet? What do you think?)

So people like the idea of this mascara but think we fell short on a couple fronts in our video explanation.

    1. They want to see a photo of the wand. So we just put that up on the site. Big miss on our part.

    2. People wished we had put the mascara on in the video. Hmmm…can’t fix that miss so easily. But the smooth application-no clumps-is one of the best things about Fiberwig. I guess you’ll have to trust us on that. After weeks of using it, the applicator wand still acts like it is brand new…no dried up stuff. Glides on smoothly.

    3. Some people consider an “everyday” mascara (as we termed Fiberwig) more likely to be cheap stuff….we actually meant the opposite…that this is our go-to product for daily use.

As my friends will tell you, I'm not a huge makeup person, so when a salesperson at Sephora told me that Fresh Supernova mascara would solve all my racoon-eye problems I bought it. No go ... it's clumpy, itchy and inevitably ends up halfway down my face.

Have to say, I feel better about a recommendation from Jules since I have similar coloring and I'm not seeing any circles around her eyes...I'll let you know how it goes!

I see there are other women out there just like me looking for a change after using the same brand of mascara for years and years. I always make time for mascara. Mascara works for me on a dressy day or a lounge in my yoga pants day. Oh no it just sold out! Can I still get some? Is there a secret stash at the office.

Hey we are going as crazy as you watching this; is the mascara sold out, or not? People are asking…”what’s up with that-it keeps changing back and forth.” What’s happening is that when someone reserves a unit for a friend, we set it aside. That can be for as long as two hours, or until the person buys or passes on the reserve. So we can be “technically” sold out, and then a unit can come back into availability. We like being the only site that we’ve ever heard of with a reserve feature, but we will have to watch and see if this innovation creates fun and a meaningful customer benefit, or simply more frustration than it is worth.

AN UPDATE: Last night our developer Eric discovered that our database (where the reserves are stored) was set up on Central time, but we were taking the orders and reserves on Eastern time. So that hung up all reserves for an hour too long. So that is now fixed.

I think the reserve for a friend feature works against you. I think a referral feature like "tell a friend about this" (without physically putting it in reserve) is a better approach. If I see it says "Sold Out", I'm going to assume it's gone and I'm not going to come back and check later on.

Val - thanks for your input. The reserve does seem to work against you if there are not too many units left. This could work against the business too if someone reserves a unit with only a little time left before we switch to another grommet. We'll monitor this and appreciate your patience as we work through the 'right' approach to take.

Claire - Thanks for your order. I just confirmed that your order did come through, phew! Your comment helped point out something that we were not clear about. Our 'reserve for a friend' feature allows you to tell someone and they have 2 hours to get around to visiting our site and considering to buy. We give customers 15 minutes to put items in their shopping basket 'get it now') before we put those items back into inventory. We want to give you time to think over their purchase, but we also understand that a lot of shopping baskets are abandoned - so we hope that 15 minutes is enough time to consider and check out. As I noted above, we'll monitor this and welcome your input - thanks for your patience also for being one of our first customers.

(We need to make this clearer, and will also be doing a survey of our customers see what time works best for them....noon or 9AM EST) We picked noon because it gets us 9AM on the West Coast, and we see ourselves as a nice little lunch break/nap time diversion over on this coast. But we'll keep an eye on what people prefer.

My guess is that you put our last unit in your shopping cart and triggered the Sold Out at that time. But if you think it said Sold Out first, and you were still allowed to start a shopping cart, that is a horse of a different color. That should not happen, clearly.
