Cosmetic Order

Imagine being able to replace a bunch of different makeup compacts with a single palette that holds all your favorite colors and brands. Now imagine one generous-size mirror instead of a handful of impractically small mirrored cases cluttering up your cosmetics bag. Sounds nice and easy, right? That’s the idea behind the UNII palette, a new solution for storing makeup that’s clever, practical and environmentally friendly. An innovative feature is its magnetized palette, which grips tiny makeup containers, or pots. You can fill the UNII palette with makeup sold in refill sizes, which is not only a cost-saver but also more environmentally friendly since it eliminates the need for wasteful packaging. More and more cosmetics companies are selling their makeup in this way. You can also transfer any metal makeup pot from its original case to the UNII palette through a process called de-potting (you use a hair dryer to loosen the glue seal, then pop your favorite eye shadow out of the old container). The inventor of the UNII palette is Minna Ha, who grew tired of having to travel with a caravan of compacts. She had seen other makeup palettes, but they didn’t accommodate her taste for variety since most were tailored to carry only a single brand of cosmetics. Kathy Kramer, the inventor of the bulk-free Invisibelt we featured last month, introduced us to Minna and UNII Cosmetics. We’re excited to help spread the word about this new product. It’s great for teens, frequent travelers and anyone who wants to simplify their cosmetics.

I hear that the Daily Grommet community loves to uncover fresh, smart solutions, and that's what UNII is! As an avid makeup user raised in Southern California, I was accustomed to applying makeup from five different brands and seven different little cases. Opening and closing each one with a mirror large enough to see just one eye was not easy, especially on airplanes. I developed the UNII palette to organize my makeup into one stylish compact with an ample mirror and I've been liberated! I am here all day to chat with you, so please let me know what you are thinking!

I love the Unii palette. I have one for home and one in my purse. It was so much fun putting together my palette and finally using some of the make up that have been hiding in my drawers! The case is really cute and I get lots of compliments.

I LOVE this product! I throw it in my purse and there's no mess since the make-up pans are secured with a magnet and the case has a strong clasp. Also, I don't have a bulky make-up bag anymore because everything is consolidated in one palette!

The UNII Palette has revolutionized my morning routine and travel! Its deliciously saturated color, magnetized "pots" of powder and details like a thumb rest and giant mirror make me think that the inventor considered every woman's needs. It's hard to explain how gorgeously elegant a solution the UNII is to unifying all your makeup. Get it!

As someone who is on the go early in the morning, I love that I don't have to open numerous make up cases, and that everything I need is consolidated in one multifunctional case. Wow,this product really simplies my old daily ritual of finding different makeup cases in my bulky makeup bag. I have 3 and have given many other ones to my daughters and friends. The palettes gave me a plain sight to coordinate the colour and the mood with my outfits. I move the different makeup around in a case to carry with me for a special night out or a party. I LOVE MY UNII!!! Thanks, Minna for inventing this product!

@sophia: you might try using a fine tip sharpie to put an initial (or the color or whatever info you need) on the bottom of the inidividual pots. You could also organize the pots so that you keep the individual brands together. I don't know if that is of any help.

@sophia and @ nikki, you can either write with a pen or sharpie on the bottom of the magnets (they come with a writable label), or you can also remove the original label from the bottom of the pot (i.e. MAC pots have a small circle label you can remove and re-stick to the bottom of your pan).

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team
    5/6/2010 11:36 PM

@Kyle - The inside dimensions are 2.8"D x 5.4"L, so it has room for many pots. It's not meant to replace your whole make-up counter, but it's a wonderful solution for when you are out and about or traveling and you can consolidate your favorite makeup for the trip in one place. All your standard brushes may not fit but you can get ones that are sized right and will do a good job.

Once I stick my depotted shadows & blushes into the palette, then how do i remove a magnetized pot from the Unii palette when its finally empty? what is the process I would use to remove the empty pot & replace it, would I use the original depotting process, with a hair dryer, then gently pry it off, how would I do this without damaging the Unii?

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team
    9/30/2010 12:42 AM

@monica - a pot is easily removed. The magnet is strong enough to hold it in place but not so strong that you can't remove it from the palette. Add a new magnet to a new pot, pop it in place of the one you just removed and you're all set to primp!

I think the UNI is a terrific idea. 2 comments, really. I wish it was BIGGER as I use a powder foundatioun that also comes in a compact I'd like to carry. #2: $29.00 is too high a price for this EMPTY box---with or without magnets. It should only cost HALF the price you're asking. That way I'd buy 2 of them, but NOT $29.00 for ONE + shipping & handling(for a small EMPTY plastic box!,) and then I have to do ALL the work of "heating" my various eyeshadows & whathaveyous! It can't possibly cost anywhere near that much to produce them! Nice invention, but WAY overpriced!!!
