DIY Green Clean

We’ve been conditioned to think it takes a noxious product like bleach to really get stuff clean. Robin Kay Levine is helping to dispel that myth, one grease spill and one dirty sink at a time. She developed a do-it-yourself kit to show people just how easy it is to mix your own cleaners using common household supplies. The main ingredients are vinegar, which can kill up to 98% of bacteria and germs; baking soda, which acts as a natural abrasive to remove dirt and absorb odors; and olive oil, which polishes surfaces without leaving a sticky residue. Robin was inspired to develop the Eco-Me cleaning kit after helping her sister during chemotherapy treatments and realizing how important it is to be surrounded by natural products that are free of harmful chemicals. The kit comes with three reusable containers that are marked with measurement lines on the side, plus enough ingredients to make one batch of each of Robin’s cleaners. There’s an all-purpose spray cleaner (for windows, counters and stainless steel), wood polish (for wood furniture and floors), and a scrub cleanser (for toilets, sinks and tubs). Her special blend of essential oils, including tea tree, lemongrass, lavender and rosemary, is also part of the kit. Lisa Borden, a marketing executive and mother of three, wrote to tell us about the Eco-Me kit. “It is not often that an exceptional, safe and effective product line is backed by an exceptionally ethical company. Eco-Me offers it all,” Lisa says. Thank you to the Green Cleaning Coach and author of the book, “The Joy of Green Cleaning,” Leslie Reichert who says, “Germs are invisible to the naked eye, and we’ve come to believe that we need to use toxic chemicals to kill germs, but Eco-Me proves that clean can be achieved with natural products that could actually be eaten.” We couldn’t agree more. It’s time to get mixing.

We are so excited to be joining the Daily Grommet and sharing our healthy cleaning kits with everyone! There has been a lot of press around the harmful effects of cleaning products on our health and with many products lining the shelves these days it's even harder to know which ones are truly safe. The word natural is used so loosely by many manufacturers and many products making these claims but are not walking their talk! Well, at Eco-Me we walk, talk and dance our tune of pure simple ingredients and our DIY Home Kit makes it easy and fun to mix up natural cleaners at home. They are safe and effective and save you money as well! Not bad!

Did you know that white vinegar kills up to 98% of bacteria? Yep, quite awesome, it's because of the 5% acidity. Eco-Me gives you a great essential oil blend (tea tree, lavender, rosemary & lemon grass) so cleaning your home turns it into a spa treatment! Really now, shouldn't clean smell good and be fun?

    Are there refills available?

@Leigh: I also add some lemon juice to my mixes. The natural acids act as germ killer as well ginger. I've not used this kit but I have used their microfiber cloth. They are great! It cuts down on the use of paper products and destruction of our forests. You never run out because they are always at hand. They are very absorbent. I cut one to fit my "swiffer" and use it rather than buying refills. I keep one in the car to dust the dash and clean the windows when needed. I hope this was helpful! ~ Anita

@Leigh - Refills of the main ingredients aren't necessary. You can find what you need in your own pantry -- baking soda for the scrub, olive oil for the polish and vinegar for the spray. Eco-Me does sell refills of the essential oil blend, and the home box set supplies enough essential oil to make two batches.
