Marja Table Runner or Trivet

Fruit of the Vine

Felted wool never looked so chic.

These trivets and table runners are from Verso Design, a Finnish design house that specializes in modern textiles and innovative home accessories inspired by nature. The design features berries on a vine, laser-cut from thick, felted wool (available in five colors and two sizes). The creator is Tuttu Sillanpää, (above) who co-founded Verso with her mother Kirsikka Savonen.

Tuttu’s choice of felted wool is soft, comfortable and familiar. But she gave it a modern edge with the graphic
berry cutouts. The effect is minimalist and bold, without feeling cold. It’s a welcome change from conventional trivets, which are often made from hard, inflexible materials like metal, ceramic or wood. While Verso’s trivets and table runners are made from a softer material, they still get the job done, protecting tabletops from hot dishes and platters. Plus, Verso’s Marja trivets add artistry to the table. Most trivets get put away after the meal, but these are beautiful enough for everyday display. Read More Read Less

I'm glad to have Marja-trivets as today's Grommet. As a designer I'm trying

to create items that are practical and usefull but at the same time

beautiful. Objects that bring joy to the everyday life. These trivets you

don't need to hide in the closet when cleaning up the table.

I myself keep my Marjas on the table constantly.

If you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer you!

I wanted to add that these are fantastic decorative table pieces. I like to use them in monochromatic groups...two small on either side of a long runner. Simple, yet dramatic table design is achieved. I'll use them to support platters and side dishes but they are almost too fantastic to cover.

We have the large bright red table runner on our wooden dining room table and we do NOT put it back into the drawer. It makes a great addition to the table when the table is bare. Just the red runner and two votive candles on either end and the table has a nice look.

These are wonderful they look fashionable and functional. I think they would make a fabulous host or hostess gift, too. It's something that nobody else is going to show up with!

Thank's for your comments, happy to hear you like them! Kate you're right with your gift idea. Trivets are also something everyone needs and uses. The small Marja also fits into a standard envelope and it's light. So if you need to send a gift, this could be a good idea for that purpose.

Thanks for having me! Weather is fine in Helsinki, not too cold, about 23f. But we have sooo much snow! Last week I spent skiing in Lappland. In there it was freezing cold but sunny and beautiful.

Tuttu - Jules describes a Grommet as a product "that has great utility, style, or invention. Very often it has all three." Your beautiful trivets have all three. The classic elegant design makes this something that will be used for many years to come.

Tuttu, What is felted wool? Can you wash these pieces?

Katherine: I do try to make products that last long. Using material that's good quality lenghtens the life, but also the design has a great importance in that. The times we live show in my pieces, and that's the way it should be. At the same time I'm trying to avoid a very trendy look, because my wish is that people will want to live with these products for years.

Felt is a non-woven cloth that is produced by matting, condensing and pressing woollen fibres. Verso products are made of 100% wool felt. There are synthetic materials on the market that resemble felt, but the feel and looks aren't nearly as beautiful and they can't take the heat from hot pots.

Cleaning the pieces is easy. Stains can be wiped off by a damp cloth. Firm dirt can be rubbed out delicately using a knife. Trivets can also be washed by hand in a mild soap water and ironed through a damp cloth if needed.
