Magic Toob

Lampshade Levelers

Level-Headed Lighting

It’s amazing how something so simple can solve such a nagging problem.

The problem is lampshades that won’t stay put. The solution is Magic Toob, a silicone tube invented by former chemist Jack D’Alelio to wrap around existing lampshade clips. The rubberized surface of the tubing grips a light bulb, solving the problem of
perpetually crooked mini shades and chandelier shades. In particular, Magic Toob works great with spiral-shaped compact fluorescent lamps (CFL). The silicone wrapper makes it possible for rigid metal lampshade clips to grip even irregularly shaped CFLs without slipping.

Why is this important? CFLs use much less power and can last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs. They fit into most lighting fixtures formerly used for incandescents – but many of us have avoided making the switch because the spiral CFLs don’t work with our traditional clip-on lampshades. To get around that problem, manufacturers make round CFLs that are shaped like old-school incandescents. But round CFLs cost about four times as much as spiral ones. With Jack’s patented Magic Toob, you can buy energy-efficient, economical spiral CFLs without worrying about lampshade incompatibility.

The federal government may soon mandate a phasing-out of incandescents, perhaps as soon as 2012. But there’s no need to wait until then to start saving power and money.

I’m thrilled that the Daily Grommet has chosen to feature the Magic Toob Lampshade Leveler as Today’s Grommet! This day is all about the “wearing of the green," but how about becoming greener while saving a lot of green? Being able to use the odd shaped energy efficient bulbs with your existing shades will save you money and stop you from seeing red while trying to get your shades to snugly fit all the oddly shaped bulbs in your home. I look forward to everyone's comments!

A very clever product. I use these in my home and they solve huge problem. In our home we use the curly bulbs in virtually all of our lamps now that we have the Magic Toob. Prior to installing the Magic Toob on our clip on shades, we were limited where we could use the curly bulbs.

Thanks for the comments. It appears that you guys aren't alone. This is the feedback I've been getting from people who have tried the product:

Patty in Indiana - “Congratulations Jack, you are so smart! I've been trying to come up with an idea for about a month now. It never occurred to me to insulate the existing old-school clip.”

Diana in Vermont - “This appears to be a great invention! In my lampshade business, people want to use the CFL's but many shades have clips, as you know.”

Carl in Michigan - “Your idea works great. It holds the shade in place very well. I couldn't be happier with the performance of these.”

Sue in Massachusetts - “Works great! Love this product!”

Jon in Pasadena - “I'm pleased... they solve the problem of metal clips on slippery glass CFL bulbs.”

Amber in Indiana - “Product is working great! Lampshades are staying on straight, no tilting. Thanks!!”

Victor in New York - “Excellent adapters.”

Tom in Pennsylvania - “Simply Ingenious! Thank You!”

Colby in New Hampshire - “Great job, I think you have a winner.”

Dotty in New York - “Got the samples, so simple it is great!!! Another Post-It. What is the cost and what is the minimum?? Who is distributing these and where do I sign up??”

Anna in Maryland – “I just used the toobs on a lampshade and it works perfectly - no more tilted lampshades. Will recommend your product to family and friends.”

Kathy in New Hampshire - “This is great. It’s nice to have the shades looking like they should instead of skewed!”

Bill in Massachusetts - “I have used them on two lamps now, where I couldn't use fluorescent bulbs before, and they work great! The idea is simple and elegant, just what is necessary for these bulbs.”

Mike in Jamaica - Jack, the Magic Toobs work perfectly for me. They fit snugly on my 16 shades and are secure on the spiral CFL's that I am using. An AWESOME Product!!!

Patricia in New York - Love it!! Easy to put on and I haven't had to think about it since!! I've be telling all of my family and friends. I'm so happy to not have to buy new lampshades... You have a great product!... can’t wait until they’re in the stores!

Hi Jack, congratulations on your product launch. I have distributed many samples to satisfied customers at my Lamp/Shade Shop. For more information on the savings associated with CFL's, visit One CFL can save you $42 in electric costs over its lifetime. Another thing, using a Magic Toob to convert a clip lampshade from incandescent to CFL makes it less likely that the lamp will become a fire hazard, since CFL's are so much cooler. An over-sized incandescent in a clip lampshade can be dangerous. You can use a higher-output CFL in a smaller shade when you need more light. We're fortunate in Vermont that Efficiency Vermont subsidizes the cost of CFL's in many of the hardware stores, so we can usually buy them for $1 (Ace, Aubuchon among others)

    Good luck.

I tried these and loved them. @Kate's comment is so true. I had a package of three and figured that that was enough until I realized that we have far more lamps with the 'clip on' shades than I realized. Most of our bedroom lamps are clip on, and the kids often leave them on all day when they have gone off to school. With the CFL I'm not as upset about this, as the amount of electricity used is so much less. Jack, a great invention.

When I was rummaging in my closet this morning, a shirt fell off of one of my wire hangers and I immediately thought of Jack's Magic Toobs. I bet that little piece of silicone could wrap around a hanger just where it is needed to keep those problem clothes from slipping off!

Thanks for all the great comments! I'd like to give a special shout out to Diana Peduzzi who was one of the very first people to inquire about the Magic Toob. Diana, can you please provide a link to your lampshade business in VT? I would like to put it up on the new Magic Toob site that will be rolling out soon!

Katherine, ever since shooting the Grommet video, I've been pondering some additional interesting hacks for the Magic Toob, you just came up with the best ones yet, and I'll tell you why I know it will work! When I was developing the product, I needed something that could stand in for a bulb clip because I had only purchased a limited number of bulb clips and shade frames from The Lamp Shop in NH (That’s a shout out to YOU Colby!). It turns out that the wire used to make bulbs and the wire that’s used to make coat hangers are the exact same size! And here’s a fun little footnote: In an earlier comment I posted some of the feedback I’ve received from customers. One of them was Mike from Jamaica (Hey Mike!). He first contacted me several months ago and wanted to know if the product would work on a bunch of rattan shades that he had custom made. He told me the bulb clips were made from coat hangers so I knew they would work! LOL!

David is technically correct in that the law passed by congress does not actually state that incandescents will be "banned" in so many words but the law sets efficiency standards for light bulbs that NO incandescent will be able to meet! So for all intents and purposes, it will result in a "de facto" ban. GE was working on development of a new type of high efficiency incandescent but has since stopped all development:

Today marks the second anniversary since the Daily Grommet Launched the Magic Toob! Here's the latest customer feedback that arrived today from Tom in New York:

"The floors in our home date from about 1840 and they have enough bounce in them that with normal foot traffic the table lamp shades in our dining room were never straight for very long. I'm glad my web search for "crooked lamp shades" turned up Magic Toob. I think your product should be standard equipment for clip on shades."
