In For The Long Haul

Wheelbarrows had been in use for many hundreds of years before Henry Muller, a retired Brigadier General in the U.S. military, decided it was time for a modern makeover. He envisioned a more stable cart that’s strong enough to carry heavy loads, yet agile enough to navigate tight quarters and rough terrain. He patented his rugged invention, called the Smart Cart. He is pictured here demonstrating its versatility. A Smart Cart has two wheels, situated near the middle of the tub to distribute the load more evenly. This gives the cart greater stability, so you don’t have to worry about arm-wrenching struggles to balance a one-wheel wheelbarrow. You also can push or pull the Smart Cart from either end, unlike a wheelbarrow that requires you to stand behind the two handles. The sturdy frame is made of rustproof aluminum, and the seamless, waterproof plastic tub snaps into place. The company builds its carts in Gorham, Maine, and folks hear about them largely by word of mouth (you won’t find Muller’s Smart Carts for sale at big-box retailers). We heard about the Smart Cart from a Grommet friend, Carol Chandor, who uses hers to haul groceries, recyclables, and other home supplies. It’s ideal for gardening, small farms, riding stables, marinas and even a trip to the beach. And when it’s time for relaxing, it makes a fun serving cart. Just hose it off, load it up with ice and your favorite beverages (the tub is leak-proof, since it has no bolt holes), and invite the neighbors.

We are excited to have our carts featured today. The Smart Cart started a (small) revolution in the cart

industry with our patented design 35 years ago -- Maybe the best home and garden cart you've never heard of.

We manufacture the carts right here in Maine with a small group that works hard on quality, personal service and

ensuring your choice with us was a good one. Thank you for your interest and I look forward to answering any

    questions you may have.

This was one of those "surprise" products for me to test. The more I used it (or had my kids use it) the more value I saw in it. It blows away any wheel barrel I have ever used and it has countless fun uses outside of gardening and work around the house.

This is so thoughtfully designed I love it! The effort it takes keeping a wheelbarrow balanced on one wheel always outdoes me.

Greg - are you shaking your head over the antics of Sara and Wendy? Clearly it says 'not for human transport' for a reason!! Kids and lawyers - please stop watching video at 1:49.

Yes the tires are a mountain bike style from Kenda USA, but our rims are custom for Smart Carts with stronger, more numerous spokes and a wider hub for weight-bearing strength.

We have a horse and board him at a facility closeby, where they use several of your carts. My daughter goes to shows all year and we are frequently traveling to other farms. It is amazing to see what other places use in their barns! It's a dirty (and often wet) job to take care of a barn and your cart never rusts and doesn't fall apart after years of use! There is always a cart in the trailer when we go to shows and it gets used constantly! It really does the job.

Anyway, any shot you might send me a handle and another copy of the assembly info? Thanks very much.

I am curious to know the dimensions of the large smart cart box. I have a stable and my hay cart broke. It would take 2 bales inside the box, and I could stack a third on top. Do 2 bales of hay fit inside your cart without having to hang over the sides?

  • Katherine

@Juli: The dimensions of the box are 45" x 27" x 15". That would be great if this could replace your hay cart that broke.

Looking at the picture it looks like the tub is 47" long, 24" wide, and 15" deep. Will it fit through a 30" wide door way? What is the rated load capacity? I want to use it to bring in fire wood for our furnace.

@ Jim Anderson: This cart will not go through your 30" wide door way since the max width is 32" from one end of the axle to other end of axle. The max load is 400 lbs with the 20" wheels

Here's the specs of the Smart Cart:

    Capacity: 7 cu.ft.

Height Overall (when assembled): 28" (tub itself is 15")

Length Overall: 56" (tub itself is 46")

Max. Width: 32" (tub itself is 28")

    Weight: 35lbs

Wheel size: 20" dia. x 2" tread width.

Maximum Load: 400 lbs with 20" wheels
