Microwave Popcorn Poppers

Healthy, Easy Popcorn

Today’s kids are growing up thinking that popcorn comes from a tri-fold bag. While microwave popcorn may be the most convenient way to cook up everyone’s favorite treat, it’s not the most natural, thanks to the added chemicals, fake butter flavorings and wasteful packaging. Popping popcorn yourself on the stovetop is an option (and nostalgic), but the required oil makes things messy and adds calories. We went looking for a simple, healthy and affordable alternative— and we found it at Catamount Glass.

popcorn popper is made of borosilicate glass that can withstand high temperatures without shattering, works with any type of popcorn kernels, and doesn’t require oil. Real butter is optional, and melts in the included silicone tray as the kernels are popped. The larger container comes with a handle, and the smaller size is ideal for space-saver microwaves.

Alain Karyo, an architect, is the founder of Catamount Glass. The 31-year-old company first made beakers for schools and laboratories, but switched to designing cookware when Alain saw the need for a sturdy alternative to existing glass cookware. We’re glad Catamount made the transition into the kitchen. Movie night just got tastier.

our healthy popping. We have been making people healthier and happy with

our fresh microwave popcorn without all of the plastic artificial

flavors and unnecessary additives. Our Microwave Corn Poppers are made

of borosilicate glass which is heat proof and dishwasher safe. The Clear

    is the New Green.

Hello, i own a big pop corn popper, and i bought a small one after i realized we had a camper with a small microwave and it works great. Very good investment :)

LOVE this! We use a paper lunch sack in the microwave to pop popcorn, but it doesn't handle the butter well. (And IMO, popcorn MUST have butter!) What a brilliant idea -- and great gift!

  • Lynn
    5/12/2010 12:16 PM

Like the idea of this, but two things. Please suggest people use organic pop corn. Healthier and still inexpensive. Other is a question. Can this be used on the stove top? Don't like to use a microwave.

Jason, this is a brilliant idea. It saves money, it eliminates the chemicals, it handles the butter all in one container. I just bought one (and should have bought more as gifts; a great gift idea.) Another great Grommet!

Hello!! This particular item has been deisgned for the microwave. The glass is flame proof, however we do not recomend using the popper on the stove for saftey reasons.

@Justin - good to know it's so good you bought a back-up for camping. Great idea!

@Lisa - smart idea to use a paper bag! I agree, popcorn with butter is my favorite.

@Lynn - thank you for that suggestion. Do you have any organic popcorn brands that you would like to share with everyone? We love spreading the word about good brands that our community supports.

@DJP - definitely add this to your favorites for when you need a perfect gift idea!

I buy organic popcorn in bulk at our local co-op which is PCC in the northwest. It's very inexpensive--I could be wrong, but I think it's less than $1.50 a pound and a pound makes a lot!

  • Lynn
    5/12/2010 12:36 PM

Thanks for responding about use on the stovetop. Would love to see one developed just for that. I do make popcorn on the gas stove in a pot. Do need to use a bit of oil though. Oh well, will wait for next version, but I'm guessing you'll sell lots of these cause most people do use microwaves. Will tweet it for those that do. Good luck!

Though I can't stand the smell of popcorn, my wife loves it as a snack. We buy Trader Joes popcorn and though it does not have as much stuff in it as major brand popcorn, it is still full of preservatives. So this is a nice product. And considering she is a scientist, she will appreciate something made out of sturdy lab-grade glass :-)

That all said, hope this does not sell out. Going to have to buy it after I come back to US. Don't want to have it sitting and waiting outside the door for a friendly neighbor to "borrow".

@Apollo - we happen to know the people who make these...we'll just get some more if they sell out! You are a dear to get this for your wife even though you yourself are not partial to popcorn.

Will the 2.5 q model with a handle rotate freely inside an microwave with a turntable?

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team
    8/25/2010 10:12 PM

@Billylee - it shouldn't be a problem. The popper is 6" with a 4" handle. As long as your turntable is 10" you should be able to set it so that no part of the popper is over the edge of the turntable. As it rotates, your popper will stay within the boundaries of the turntable.

I think I got one of the last 2 sets of popcorn poppers before they were unavailable and I must say, WAIT FOR THEM!! They make the MOST amazing popcorn. I have been eating popcorn my whole life (my favorite food) and these work so well. For the 1 quart, I put in 2 tablespoons of unpopped popcorn (any brand) and then 1 teaspoon of stick butter on the top and put it in for 2:30 minutes and TaDa, perfect popcorn. I like that the popcorn isn't soggy with the butter, but has the perfect butter taste.

Your product only pops half the popcorn. I only put in 1 layer so it isn't that there too many kernels in the container. Time for popping is set by the microwave (3.5 minutes). So, I'm not happy with your product. I am not the only one with this problem. Several attempts at other microwaves have failed to give us a result better than a simple pot and I'm afraid we will have to toss your product.

  • Jim
    12/11/2010 6:42 PM

In response to Denise. Before you send the Catamount popper back try this. I've been using the popper for about a year and determined that 1/2 cup of corn is too much and it will not all pop before the popped corn begins to burn. Start with 1/4 cup of corn and microwave for about 3 mins depending on your microwave wattage. We have an 1100 watt microwave and I cook it for 3:00 to 3:15 and most of the kernals pop. Yum.
