Delightfully Different Dinnerware

Be prepared for a tactile surprise the first time you pick up one of these plates or cups. They look just like the ubiquitous paper plates and plastic cups that appear at picnics and barbecues everywhere, but they’re not disposable. They’re made of durable melamine, so they’ll hold up to gobs of barbecue sauce and potato salad much better than the flimsy dinnerware they pay homage to. The creator is David Dewey, who worked with a manufacturer to make molds of everyday paper plates and plastic cups and then cast these modern, eco-friendly replicas. We found them after Daily Grommet reader Michele MacIntyre emailed us, looking for help finding this updated version of the classic paper plate. She thought they were special and we agree. David’s dinnerware is great for kids, and his witty interpretations will make the adults at your party do a double-take when they discover the surprising heft and pleasing finish of these plates and cups. Plus, they won’t collapse or leak, and you won’t wind up with a big bag of trash after your next get-together.

One Hundred 80 degrees is thrilled to be a part of today's Daily Grommet. The "paper" plates and party cups are some of our personal favorites here in our office. These are items that we get email requests for daily. And why not? Especially at this time of year, perfect for picnics, by the pool, bachelor pads, off to college dishes (not to mention beer pong), shower presents, for the cabin, 4th of July celebrations and so on....

These remakes of such traditional and familiar items are also promoting the reusable factor. No more throwing away, just wash (even in the dishwasher) and reuse. How simple is that!

We hope you enjoy them as much as we do. My name is Julie and I'm here to answer any questions you have!

Not microwave safe? Why not just use regular plastic plates, to me these remind me of trash, disposable etc. I give props to the man for thoughtfulness, yet, there is no point to it. Buy a set of plates that are microwave safe and save space at the same time. It's like we are trying to convert the people that only use throw away plates to the idea of washing dishes by giving them a comfortable alternative visually. lol. Sorry I don't see a point vs other plastics over it being a novelty item.

@Hargak - thanks for sharing your point of view! I don't know about all plastic plates, but I picked up a set of plastic plates and they look very ragged after a few uses. We still use them for bringing stuff to and from the grill, but they aren't used for company. The novelty factor is great and makes a fun statement! As Kate says in the video it's a 'Visual Pun'.

@Katherine - Daily Grommet Team: But these are melamine. My parents had a colorful set of plates and bowls when I was a kid and they looked great for years. I'm thinking all those church suppers where I'm asked to bring my own dish service! I like that they're so thin for packing in a picnic hamper or backpack. Easily rinsed and put in a zip bag until you can get them home and wash them. Where is the melamine cutlery? ;-)

Love the idea of the plates for the church suppers, or any other out and about event! Cutlery you say, well, it's on the way. We have introduced a plastic "silver" pattern that is a remake of a sterling pattern from years ago. That product will be available in July.

All of our melamine product has been tested and is safe to use. The rules are pretty strict based on what has happened in the past, so believe me, we get it all tested!

I can tell you that when you use these plates and cups with people who haven't seen them before, they all want to know where they can get them.

    Enjoy!

Melamine was being illegally used as a food additive to increase the apparent protein content. It's not a component you can eat. Melamine is a durable, hardened plastic and is FDA approved for use as tableware and food safe. Hope this clears up your perception on this subject.

Also, like all plastics these should not be used in the microwave because plastic can absorb radiation from the microwaves.

The creator is David Dewey, who worked with a manufacturer to make molds of everyday paper plates and plastic cups and then cast
these modern, eco-friendly replicas.

Unfortunately, we have sold out of the plates and won't be reordering until the summer season.

I own 2 sets of the "ant 'paper' plate sets. All my friends think theses are a riot to eat off of when dining. Do these come with matching ant cups and cutlery, also? Would love to dazzle my friends, again! Thanks.

@Mary: The ant variety is not a product line that we carried. It does sound fun, though!

    Hello,

I am very much looking forward to ordering these paper plates and cups. I see that they are out of stock now. Can you please be able to tell me until when will they be available, so that I can order them as soon as possible. Really loved them.

    Thank you,

    Kal

Rec'd the white platter ( approx. 16-18 inches) as a gift and love it. Looking for more platters of the same & can not seem to find it. Anyone know where I can purchase the large white platter?
