The Right Mat

Reclaimed Fishing Rope Doormat

Ocean Treasures

Good old Yankee ingenuity strikes again.

When floating ropes used by lobstermen in Maine turned out to be dangerous to the local whale population, David Bird found a way to recycle the old ropes and help the lobsterman offset the cost of buying new, whale-friendly ropes. His company, Custom Cordage, recycles old float rope to make these beautiful doormats that are saturated with authentic marine colors. They’ve got great
texture and loads of personality. Plus they’re virtually indestructible, since the braided cords have already withstood hardcore exposure to the briny deep.

No two of these doormats are alike, but we were able to select our favorite colors when David Carter (a former lobsterman himself) visited Daily Grommet’s offices with a pickup truck full of reclaimed rope and then invited us up to Northern Maine to check out Custom Cordage. Each doormat is handwoven in Waldoboro, Maine, and you can choose from a traditional rectangular or runner style. These mats are helping to safeguard marine life, support lobstermen and protect the environment and keep the employees of Custom Cordage working all year round.. So far 500,000 pounds of rope destined for landfills has been rescued by Mr. Bird’s Custom Cordage and they’ve reused more than 100,000 pounds in these doormats. Talk about a sea change.

I love this picture of Joanne settling in with all of that cord and a friend to warm her feet! I had assumed that this cord was dyed after the mat was made. It's very interesting to see it in all its colorful twists!

Each fishermen, uses a different color rope for the different lengths that he fishes in. My captain usually had 6 standard lengths, all a different color, to mark the different depths of the water he fishes in.

Here is a link to a story in The Lincoln County News from a year ago about your company. It is fabulous that these mats were able to keep people employed in a time period where many would have been laid off! Truly a great story for a great product!

Never knew rope came in that many colors! Real cool.

@Cupola - yes - each color distinguished a different length for the fishermen.

I work in the environmental conservation field, at a Florida coastal nature reserve. Discarded marine rope causes all kinds of damage to our reefs, both rock and coral.... and is a very real problem, not to mention a big expense for fishermen who must replace lost rope. I'm absolutely tickled "green" that this company is salvaging the used rope and using it's almost indestructible properties to advantage, ie. making these great woven door mats and runners. On top of that, their manufacture means jobs!

@Mimi - It is a great all around story, with the exception of the original problem that these ropes caused! It's definitely a product worth supporting.

I LOVE my Custom Cordage doormats. The whole back-story of how they have come into being is wonderful- and they look great too. Every person that comes to the house wants to know where they came from- more power to you, Daily Grommet!

@Andrew - thanks for stopping back to let us know how much you (and your guests) are enjoying your doormat. The stories that surround many of our Grommets are simply too interesting not to share!

I'm not familiar with the texture of the ropes and wonder how the finished product would feel to bare feet, as I'm thinking of using them on the deck around our hot tub.

  • Katherine

@MissRobbie - they are rough and rugged but still feel good underfoot. Joanne uses them at her place in Maine to get that last bit of sand off their feet before heading inside.

I purchased one of your right mats from a maine retailer for alot at that price? less than $55.00

Why would I want to buy directly from you?

  • Katherine

    12/10/2011 6:32 PM

@Deb Sinderson: Because they work with what ropes they currently have available, it's not possible to predict exactly when and what colors they will have back in stock so we are unable to take orders in advance for this product. This particular colorway may not become available again.

@ Rosemary we do not wash the mats before or after they are made..they are sent as is from the ocean to your doorstep..if you would like to wash yours, a garden hose works fine or a pressure washer will make them look brand new.
