Get Your Glow On

Summer is here, and we’re all craving some vitamin D. The safe way to soak in the sunshine is with a protective coat of sunscreen. But we have to admit, we miss the healthy glow that comes from a summer suntan. If you want the best of both worlds — to capture a sun-kissed glow without damaging your skin — Solerra self-tanning solutions are the perfect remedy. Solerra’s sunless tanners don’t have chemical stains or dyes in them, like most tanners do. Instead, Solerra uses caramel and walnut extracts to achieve a natural bronze color. Their formulas contain no parabens, have been allergy-tested, and won’t clog pores. To counteract the drying effect of DHA, Solerra uses special moisturizers that leave skin feeling silky smooth. The company is led by Angie Trelstad, a redhead who knows the perils of sensitive skin. Angie helped develop other tanning products before she joined Solerra, where she finally found a self-tanning product that works and is easy on your skin. For immediate color, Solerra’s Instant Bronze formula delivers a sunless tan that lasts 7 to 10 days. Solerra also offers a clear formula that gradually tans skin over a four- to six-hour period for a more subtle (but equally long lasting) color. The tanners are applied with a mitt, so you don’t stain your hands. The clear formula is also available in a cream, to help maintain a natural tan look between bronzer applications. It’s the ideal summer solution: Sun-kissed skin without the damage from sunshine.

Sunless tanning sounds great and I love the idea of having a mitt to apply the product and a single product for both face and body. My only concern would be coming out with a "streaked" look.

I've heard of the product before but have never tried it. How dark can you get? The lady who did one leg, it didn't look very dark....it was obviously darker than the other leg, but is that as dark as it gets? What if I want more color? Isn't my hand going to get full of color if I stick it in that mitt?

Hi Jodi, I totally understand your hesitation. Sunless tanners have received quite a reputation for "unnatural" or "streaky" look. I am a red-head, so I have always been concerned with these two negatives the most. The great thing about the Solerra mitt application is that you have control of the product and because the product is "infused" into the mitt, it applies much more evenly. If you can manipulate a wash cloth to wash your body, you can apply a streak free tan, with the mitt application. The most important tip is to be thorough in your application. Circular motions are best when applying and if you go over a spot more than once, it won't get darker, but if you miss a spot it won't have tanner on that spot, and that is really the only way you will streak with a mitt. So just be really aggressive in your application and Solerra will give you a streak free, natural looking tan! Even when the mitt feels dry, it still has product in it, so when you think you are done, go over your body one more time.

Hint: The back of your hands and your feet have a tendency to grab color more easily, so when you are at the end of your application and the mitt feels almost totally dry, then do the tops of your feet and the back of your hands!

Great question Debbie! As for the palms of your hands...GREAT NEWS...the inside of the mitt has a double layer, plastic liner that you slide your hand in between, so it protects your hands and puts the tan where you want it, not on the palms of your hands! The re-usable mitt has a protective liner as well, so you can just rinse and reuse!

As for the color, the Solerra products work with your own proteins and amino acids, to give you a natural looking color for you. If you want a darker result you can re-apply the next day, but you will love the natural, healthy tan you get from one application.

Debbie....one other point I didn't mention, you see the slight difference in one leg, but that is immediately after the application, so what you are seeing is only the Instant Bronzer, and that tan will continue to develop over the next four to six hours and get darker...

Hi Harmony...yes you can use the product for Vitiligo. It is always recommended that you speak with your physician before using any new products when you have a skin condition; however, we have many loyal customers who use Solerra for this who have had their doctors recommend it. They really love the mitt application because it is easier to "spot apply" to those discolored areas of the skin. I received a letter from a regular customer thanking me, he actually purchases Solerra for his mother and he noted that she feels so much better about herself. Thanks for your great question, and I hope this helps!

You can absolutely use it on your face and you will find (since I am a red head too) that it will give your skin a more even tone. I use it on my face instead of foundation. A good tip for you is to put a dab of lotion or cream on the darker spots BEFORE you apply the Solerra tanner, this will inhibit the color from developing on the darker areas of the skin and help to blend with the lighter areas of the skin. Thanks for another great question!

Hi Rita, I am really fair too and I do use the Instant Bronzing mitt if I haven't (self)tanned in awhile or if I am going out and need a "quick" bit of color. Because we use a walnut extract and caramel for our bronzer, it is both natural, but also is NOT a stain or dye so it doesn't give a "stark" color change, just a natural instant glow. Also, it won't stain your sheets or clothes!

Kerry, The first time is always the scariest, and as with any beauty regiment, it does get better and easier every time you do it! Before self tanning you ALWAYS want to ex-foliate FIRST. So I usually shave and ex-foliate the day before I apply my tanner. Always apply to clean, dry skin. When you are using the Solerra single use self tanning mitt, remember that the mitt will have the most product on it when you first remove it from the outer foil. Be sure to put your hand IN BETWEEN the plastic lining and start with the harder to tan areas first. I start with my face, because I do use it instead of foundation, so I like a nice color on my face. Use a circular motion just like you are washing with a cloth and be very thorough in your application. I then do my legs, arms and torso and back on one side of my body THEN I switch hands (because your have TWO sides of the mitt that are saturated) then I do the same thing on the other side of my body. (go lighter on the knees, elbows, or other dryer areas)After I have done both sides I then quickly do my entire body again (now you are just blending). At the very end of the application, when the mitt feels almost totally dry, I do the back of my hands and my feet (as they have a tendency to grab more color). This is my application process and I get a perfect, streak free tan every time!

@Joan: This reminds me of Transition prescription sunglasses, not everyone knows that you have to make sure that a UV coating is applied to the glasses in addition to the Transition lenses. I was hesitant to use the spray-on sunblock's but really like the "cooling" one. I try to be as environmentally aware as possible but sometimes it is difficult these days.

@Angie: How about a "towel" for us single person's to do our back, approx. 9 inches wide and 40 inches long? Obviously we would have to have both hands in plastic gloves (or one in an exmitt [if it is plastic lined and one in a reg mitt.) Just a thought,

Hello Joan, the tanner does not have a sunscreen in it so you still need to apply sunscreen whenever you go out in the sun. You will want to wait 4-6 hours before applying the sunscreen after you tan, so as not to inhibit the color from developing. If you normally go out in the sun soon after you shower in the morning, then you may want to apply your Solerra self tanner in the evening before going to bed. And remember, Solerra doesn't contain any stains or dyes, so it won't stain your sheets!

Since I will be using the tanner mainly at home, once I have used the mitt, would I want to continue my maintenance with a lotion and reusable mitt. Hi Jeanette, sorry for the delay in my response. We put this total tan configuration together for Daily Grommet because I thought it would be a great starter kit for any advanced or new self tanner out there. You always want to exfoliate before self tanning, our single use eXmitt can be used in or out of the shower and exfoliating with the mitt helps you to get a thorough exfoliation (remember to pay special attention to elbows, knees, heels and other dry areas). Try not to do total exfoliations soon after your tanning or this will decrease the life of the self tan and our moisturizing formulation will help to slow the exfoliation process which helps your tan to last longer. In this configuration you have both the clear and instant bronzing single use mitts to try. I use the instant bronzing mitt initially to start a nice healthy color and then use the clear mitts in between to maintain that great color, or to darken your tan if you like a deeper, darker tan. The reason I really wanted to include the Solerra Silk self tanning lotion is because this is great for touch ups, but mostly because I use the Solerra Silk to maintain the color on my face in between applications of the single use mitts. (I simply rinse the re-usable mitt with my antibacterial hand soap and hang it over the tube to dry!)Since many of us, as we get older, use anti-wrinkle creams etc. on our face, this exfoliates your face which decreases the life of any self tan. I use Solerra in lieu of foundation make-up, so I normally touch up my face and neck every 4 or 5 days. I also use the spray occasionally to touch up my face and with this I just close my eyes and mist my face and neck a few times. The difference between the spray and lotion is basically preference of application methods. I really like the lotion because it moisturizes my face so nicely!

Let me know how it works for you!

This is my application process and I get a perfect, streak free tan every time!

Hi Angie, I have tried coutless brands sunnless tanners over the years (with my Irish skin--being a natural red head and all) and I must say yours sunless tanner works wonders! My friend Michelle introduced me to your product a month ago and I haven't looked back since. So glad I found your line of products before summer so I wouldn't have to subject the public to my pasty white legs. Kudos Solerra!

Hi Angela! You're right, our Solerra Instant Bronzing Mitt was featured on The View last Friday July 2. Barbara Walters make up artist was featuring her favorite products. We have many celebrity makeup artists that love the Solerra tanning mitts because they are so quick and easy to use and look "natural" instead of like a fake tan! We were thrilled to be included and if you missed the show you can watch it online just search sunless tanning segment or go to Friday, July 2nd show.

Hi Angie, I did not notice any SPF protection "built into" your product...have you studied the results of the self-tanner when a sunscreen or sunblock (30+)is used after applying? Thanks!!

    Thanks

Hello Joan, the tanner does not have a sunscreen in it so you still need to apply sunscreen whenever you go out in the sun. You will want to wait 4-6 hours before applying the sunscreen after you tan, so as not to inhibit the color from developing. If you normally go out in the sun soon after you shower in the morning, then you may want to apply your Solerra self tanner in the evening before going to bed. And remember, Solerra doesn't contain any stains or dyes, so it won't stain your sheets!

I have been using Solerra products for over 2 years and I can say that they are the best by far. I have tested many. It's the most natural looking and smells the least! My personal favorite is the cream and reusable mitt, but the single use mitt is great for traveling! I love that I can put my clothes on right away. I don't have time to wait to get dressed. I'm a woman on the go! Kudos!

Hi Ang.. Been using my Solerra a lot this summer.

I had a compliment the other day on how tan I looked. Love your

products, especially your sunblock since I am not suppose to be

    in the sun. Thank you......

love that your product does not have a strong smell or parabens. Just that alone will have my try your product. Can you help me with what would be the best items for my needs. Since I will be using the tanner mainly at home, once I have used the mitt, would I want to continue my maintenance with a lotion and reusable mitt. Or would the spray be better (and do you use a mitt with the spray) or the cream? Thanks for your help.

@jeanette - I thought the same thing and expected a strong smell when I tested Solerra; I really liked that it wasn't an issue at all. I've asked Angie to weigh in with her opinion about the mitt and spray vs. cream, so I'm sure she'll check in soon to let you know her thoughts.

How do you apply this on your back, does it come with any kind of applicator?

@Joanna: It does comes with a glove. You will probably need some assistance to reach your back.
