Swedish Lawn Game

Unleash Your Inner Viking

Croquet, horseshoes, lawn bowling . When the usual outdoor games seem tired and tame, it’s time to pick up a battle ax and start felling soldiers. Now’s your chance to unleash your inner Viking – without risking life or limb.

The V:King lawn game is inspired by a centuries-old Swedish game known as kubb or koob that outfits players with battle axes (wooden dowels) and challenges them to topple opponents’ shields (wooden
blocks) and conquer the king. As legend goes, the original players were the Vikings, who, in sensationalized barbaric spirit, played with the bones of dead enemies. This more civilized version is the beautiful handiwork of Martin Wilde, a professional hockey player who brought the love of the game with him from Sweden when he attended the University of Vermont. To make each V:King (pronounced vee-king) set, Martin and his wife Sarah use hardwood that comes from a responsibly managed forest in Quebec and is finished by them in Vermont.

In true Nordic spirit, the V:King game can be played in fair weather or foul, under the hot summer sun or atop winter’s frozen fields. The rules are simple, but it requires a combination of strength, strategy and precision to win, says Cameron McLeod, who told us about V:King — he’s the husband of Daily Grommet team member Kate. Horned helmets aren’t required… but certainly tolerated.

That's "hello everyone" in Swedish. We are Martin and Sarah Wilde and we're really excited that Daily Grommet is featuring our lawn game, VKing. VKing is a wooden yard game based on an old Swedish Viking game Martin grew up playing at his summer house in Sweden. It's a fun, easy to learn game (think a combo of bocce and bowling) that everyone can play. The basic premise of the game is to use your battle axes to knock down your opponents' shields, once you've done that you can go for the King. The first team to conquer the King claims the crown.

You can set Vking up in your backyard, at a park, on the beach or even on snow, you just need a flat open space. Age, strength and speed are unimportant… enthusiasm is! A mix of luck, skill and strategy make Vking a great way to spend time outdoors with your family and friends. It's an excellent thank you gift for your weekend hosts, an original wedding present, a great addition to a beach or lake house or the perfect thing for your high school grad to take to college.

Thanks for checking out Daily Grommet and Vking and enjoy your summer!

VKing is a fantastic lawn game that is not just restricted for the backyard! My family has given the game as gifts for years and have ourselves been playing in snow, sand and grass for quite some time. Just an absolute blast for bbq's, parties, beach days, and so many more! Love that the game is getting it's deserved time in the limelight!

Thanks for your comments! VKing is a ton of fun whether you're at the beach or hanging in your yard. The game changes a bit depending on the surface you're on and that makes it that much more fun. You'll definitely make new friends if you set it up in a public place because everyone wants to know what it is.

VKing is a super fun lawn game. Probably the best. Friends just play and play - someone I know even set up lights in their yard so they can play after dark. VKing is a hit of a gift, too.

At all our family parties the first thing the kids want to do is set up and play V King. It's officially taken over from Bocce and Wiffel Ball...I highly recommend it for people of all ages and abilities.
