Kara Weaves

Handwoven Robes

Ancient Textile Artistry

Mass-produced cotton fabrics are everywhere, but they’re a pale imitation of traditional hand-loomed cotton. Why does it matter? Because this pure cotton yarn (for which Indian fabrics originally gained fame) is suitable only for slow-speed spinning and weaving processes. When produced at these slower speeds, the resulting fabric is softer, more durable and absorbent, and has a breezy, sumptuous feel you simply cannot get any other way.

Today’s Grommet is a one-size-fits-most, handwoven cotton bathrobe with navy blue accents. It comes to us from Kara Weaves, a creative venture in Kerala, India, that’s trying to bridge the gap between traditional Indian hand-loomed textiles and today’s contemporary lifestyle. Kara Weaves works with independent teams of weavers and small sets of rural tailors to help boost India’s economy while preserving this fabric artistry. The women behind the venture (in the photo, left to right) include founder Indu Menon, a social scientist and anthropologist, B. Sreedevi, an expert on Kerala handloom fabric, Revathy Menon, a noted Indian social activist, actor, and filmmaker, and Suryakala Satish, a packaging and product expert.

No two Kara Weaves robes are exactly alike, since each bears slight variations depending upon the weaver. Orders ship directly from India, so shipping time will be a bit longer than you may be used to, but we promise these lightweight, gorgeous robes are well worth the wait.

Through our luxurious handwoven products, we invite you to share with us the warmth of our southern Indian state and the comfort of 100% cotton hand-looms! Kara Weaves is a creative venture with a social cause, that of helping the dwindling hand-loom weaving communities through an innovative mix of good design and technology!

Through Daily Grommet and its delightful team, we have showcased here our super-soft and absorbent bathrobes. These robes require very little water for wash, dry very quickly, and take up little storage space, making them ideal travel companions. They are made of the traditional towel fabric called “thorthu," known, used and loved in all Kerala families for generations. We hope you too will love and enjoy the comfort of this fabric for years to come! If you have any questions or comments, I’m here to answer them!

A wonderful story. I just ordered one. Might keep it for myself, or else it would also make a special gift.

Could you try to describe your robe in terms of American or European sizes. In India, women may be smaller than Western women....Thanks

@Sally - the robe is a 'one-size-fits-most' size with the dimensions of: Length: 42", Across Shoulders 18", Sleeve Length: 17", Circumference: 60"

The dimensions help me somewhat (a different Sally, oddly enough), but I am not sure. I wear a U.S. Women’s XXL; large hips, shortish (5'4"), and generally overweight (could easily [well, healthfully] lose about 80 pounds). Do you think this would fit? Is there much shrinkage if washed in cool water and line-dried?

@ Sally G: Our robes mostly fit the Medium to Large American sizes. However if you could send across your measurements, we can confirm whether this will fit you or not. Regarding the shrinkage, if washed in cool water and line dried, there is no shrinkage of the fabric. Also, its absorbency increases with the number of washes the fabric gets.

These look beautiful, except I am not so sure about the "one size fits all" sizing, so I will not be buying one at this time. I'm size 24 and the model wearing this looks to be much smaller! Also, would like to see floor-length robes too. I live in a colder climate, and having a floor-length robe would be nice during that time.

@norli - the best thing is to use the measurements of the garment to determine if it is going to be a good fit for you: Length: 42", Across Shoulders 18", Sleeve Length: 17", Circumference: 60" . The 60" circumference will allow for overlap and extra fullness. Let us know what other questions you have about the handwoven fabrics so we can send some answers your way! Thank you for your interest in the Kara Weaves handwoven robes.

Is there any way to get larger sizes? My boyfriend is 6'7" And wears a 2XL. Bathrobes that fit are tough for him to find.

These robes have almost doubled in price since last year. What is the reason for an almost 100% increase in price?!? I was going to order a few for Christmas presents but was so shocked by the increase I will have to find something else. Please advise if this cost increase is related to some temporary issue. Thank you.

@ Dawn W I am afraid that the partner did not realize all the costs associated with getting this product from India and through US Customs one at a time. So they have had to more than double their cost to us. This is not a situation that will change. They are a great product, and the hand done packaging makes it a very special gift. But only you can decide if it is something that's right for you. Thank you for your question.
