Homelessness has become an epidemic in our country. Approximately 3.5 million people -- 1.35 million of them children -- are likely to experience it in a given year. That's why organizations like Boston Health Care for the Homeless are essential in ensuring that those with no place to go can still receive important medical treatment.

If you’d like to get involved helping organizations that focus on health care and homelessness in your area, volunteering is a great way to start, and VolunteerMatch can help. With more than 61,000 participating nonprofits, there's something for everyone. And remember, the critical needs at today's nonprofit organizations extend long after the holidays. If you can, consider finding a way to give all year long.

Truly, the work of Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program is inspiring. Whether it is homelessness or other areas of economic need, the demand for aid is particularly great this holiday season. Tell us what other organizations you think are doing great work to help those with significant economic need. For one, I salute all the food pantries across our nation! They serve so many people, and I'm thankful for all who help.

Great message, but it is actually a little hard to watch because you blink so much.

I always think the Salvation Army does a great job, and they seem to be everywhere.
