Keep It Cool

Many of us have tried putting our reusable cooler totes in the freezer so the contents would stay cool until lunchtime at school and camp. It helps a little, but most totes aren’t designed for freezing. This one is – and it’s much better at holding the cold than ordinary lunch bags. The PackIt personal cooler is a gel-lined bag that can keep contents cold for up to 10 hours without the need for messy ice or bulky cold packs. It will cool room-temperature items, too. The PackIt folds, so it’s easy to store inside your freezer. Just pull it out when you’re ready to use it, fill it up, and you’re good to go. (It’s made from nontoxic, PVC-free and lead-free materials.) PackIt is the invention of friends Jeannette Dirksen and Melissa Kieling, who came up with the idea while brainstorming about how to keep their kids’ lunches cold. They wanted a solution that kept food cold all day, so parents could salvage uneaten perishables rather than throw them away when the kids came home from school. It’s a simple solution that really works. When you want to keep food cold for summer hikes, days at the beach, camp lunches, or travel, just PackIt in.

We are so grateful to have our product PackIt featured as today’s Grommet especially because it is only 9am here in California and already HOT! We just got back from dropping our five kids off at school, yeah, those guys, in the picture. They all have lunches packed that have berries, yogurt, string cheese, and yes, even a spicy tuna roll (go, D) and Emma (little blondie in the middle) with an Otter Pop! How you ask? We solved a simple but serious problem by inventing a personal cooler that will keep anything cold, really cold, for up to 10 hours without ice or gel packs. No more running to the pantry for processed foods, or losing gel packs that don’t work. Chat with us this morning and we will share how coolers just got cooler.

Really interested in this, as our daughter has food allergies and we take our own food everywhere!

Question -- what are the dimensions? We have a Goodbyn and a Laptop Lunchbox and I'm hoping they will fit inside.

As it warms up/thaws ... does the outside of the cooler become wet with condensation? So if my daughter had this in her backpack next to papers, would anything get wet?

Hi Sara. The dimensions of our personal cooler are 8” x 10” x 5” (8” x 10” x 2” folded). Thank you for sharing your comments with us. We can only imagine how frustrating it can be to have a daughter with food allergies. You will now be able to pack a day's worth of food in a PackIt and it will keep items cold the entire day for you.

great question! We spent about 2 years in research and development and condensation was a big concern for us. We use a coated polyester to keep the outside of the bag condensation free!! We are also proud to be PVC free, Lead Free and our gel is completely non toxic! As mothers ourselves we designed something we would want our children to carry!

I am so impressed with this idea. The best part for me is that I no longer have to look at my husband's lunchbox on the counter all night as it will be stored away in the freezer till morning. Also when I open the freezer door I won't be attacked by the barrage of ice packs that inevitably fall. Great job ladies! You should be extremely proud of your invention.

I can see the value in this for so many people! All of you who are at work and would rather not have to use your work refrigerator (if there's even room - and what IS that smell - and who ate my yogurt!?!) can keep your lunch at your desk. Great idea Melissa and Jeannette - and thanks for putting so much thought into all of the details!

Hi Lori. Yes, there is a handle on the personal cooler, and a handle and carrying strap on the bottle service/lunch for four bag. You can purchase the personal cooler through Daily Grommet and you can go to packit.com* to purchase the lunch for four PackIt. I hope this helps!

Supposedly there are no "dumb questions" (just dumb people...like me :-), so I'm going to ask. I hope everybody reading this doesn't cringe in exasperation! :-)

Not being a mom who packs lunches, and perhaps a bit "spatially challenged," could you list what items (water, yogurt, etc.) that you gals routinely fit into one lunch bag? And would it hold, say two 1/2 gallon containers of ice cream? (LOL! NOT sending my kids to school with that! Just thinking about trips to the grocery store!) And what is a "bottle service"? Again, an example of what actual items would fit in the larger pack would help me.

Is the velcro the only seal, or does it zip...my concern is that if something leaks or spills, could it spill out of the bag? If a bag is not completely full, does it affect the "keeping cold" ability at all (kind of like the difference it makes if you pack your freezer full or not)?

Just one more, I promise: Have you considered making one large enough to hold several frozen items (meals, veggies, ice cream, etc.) for trips to the grocery store or Sam's, Costco, etc.?

Whew, that's it! Thanks so much...love your idea!

  • Jeannette
    Jeannette – Special Guest
    9/10/2010 9:26 PM

Hi Snoozin! No dumb questions whatsoever! We are a new product so you have no way of knowing. In our personal cooler, you can fit the following: 6 regular sized water bottles, OR a 1/2 gallon of ice cream, possibly two depending on the size though, 2 sandwiches, 2 apples, 2 string cheese, 2 waters OR 4 baby bottles etc.

Bottle Service is the name of our PackIt that holds 2 wine bottles with room for small snacks and a pocket at the top to hold the wine opener, OR you can use it to pack a lunch for 4 people OR it can fit 15 cans of soda or beer etc (yes we've tried all combinations!) The Bottle Service bag was featured in the 2010 Grammy Swag Bag!

Both bags have velcro closures and are durable enough to stay closed when packed. The PackIts don't lose their cooling ability when only half-packed.

And answering your question about a larger version, YES! Great idea Snoozin! We also have a single wine bottle bag coming out, a shopping tote, and other surprises.

I hope I answered all of your questions!

Friends & I ride motorcycles and having something cool to drink is a must and this seems like a great idea for us to strap on or toss in saddle bags. Just in terms of total net carrying capacity, it seems like we'd be better off with two of the smaller bags as opposed to one larger one, given the dimensions you've shared. Would that be right or am I missing something? Thanks!

What is it about the technology of the bags that make it better than just putting a regular insulated bag in the freezer and using it? What makes your bags work so much better than the rest? I hope for an answer soon so I can place my order :). Thanks!

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team
    5/26/2011 2:07 PM

@Mary: Great question. Regular insulated bags are just an insulating material that will keep cold items cold (if they started cold or you throw a cold pack in) for about 2 hours. The Packit's have a gel liner (like a cold pack) that actually freezes the bag itself.

Are these dishwasher safe? The biggest issue (other than keeping things cold) I have with my kid's lunches is leaking milk containers. While I've finally found something that works most of the time, it still doesn't work all of the time, and the only way to completely clean old, dried milk (and get rid of the smell) is to throw the lunchbox in the dishwasher. The insulated lunchboxes I have for my kids now do just fine in the dishwasher, and I suspect your fabrics are very similar. I'm concerned about the gel itself being in that kind of heat.

I've had my personal gray plaid PackIt since December and I love using it to bring lunch. I often bring yogurt with me for lunch or a snack and I don't have to eat the yogurt immediately because my PackIt keeps it cold from when I pack my lunch in the morning to whenever I want to eat it, whether for lunch at noon or a snack at 3. I haven't reached the 10 hour mark, but I can say that it does keep everything cool for significantly longer than if you used an ice pack. I was kind of concerned about the weight at first, but you grow accustomed to it. At home in the evening, I clean out the contents, refold it, put it in the freezer, and my PackIt is ready to go the next morning.

Thank you for this wonderful product! :) It's really helped me to bring my lunch to school each day as a college student and now I'm using it at my workplace.

Hi. Your product seems great. Will this bag insulate hot foods as well? Also, how long should the bag last....have you had reports on leakage? If this bag does not insulate warm things (canteens with hot food, etc.) then do you have an alternative for keeping lunches hot? Can you tell I live where it get very cold??? Cheers, Ladies!

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team
    8/24/2011 9:49 AM

@Cyndi: The Packit is specially designed to keep things cool. It does not insulate hot foods. The Packit team does not currently have a solution for keeping things hot...maybe down the road! We have reviewed a lunch box system that we like that keeps things hot. You can see the Zojirushi insulated lunch container here.

@Cyndi: Hi. Although our PackIts create cold, some customers have actually stored their PackIt in the pantry and have used it to insulate hot items. We certainly don't claim we can keep items hot/warm for any length of time, but this is certainly a creative option. On your question of leakage, we have never had a bag returned because it was leaking. If the gel did ever leak, you can be reassured that it is non-toxic.

Since then it has been okay but the weather has been cooler. IDK what will happen in May/June. Also, it is small. Cannot pack a lunch + reg.water bottle. It will not close all the way, but the next size up is too big. A little disappointed.

Idk if we got a bad one or not. Most seem happy w/ their purchase. I have found our packit does not stay cool at all. We stopped using because a tote w/ blue ice and more room kept things cooler. Last week, after our packit has stayed in our freezer unused for over a month, I got it out at 12:45pm, packed a gatorade in it, and left to go pick up my son from school. By the time he got out at 2:05pm, the packit was almost completely thawed and barely cool. Now I'm just mad I wasted my money, this isn't cheap, and I question all the reviews I see on this site:( Very dissatisfied.

I LOVE the Packit. We have four; one for each family member, and we use them daily. However, I spilled something in one of the Packits quite a while ago, and now there is mold on the outside of the bag. I know you said to hand wash only, but what is the best way to hand wash it to get rid of the mold? Also, one of the velcro pieces is failing, but I'm good with a sewing machine and will just fix it myself. More of an FYI since at least a few people, as evidenced by the comments here, have had trouble with the velcro. Thanks!

@jen: It's wonderful that the Packit is working well for everybody in your family. We're glad you're handy at fixing the velcro. Your feedback is passed on to the Packit Team.

The bag can get moldy when the bag is still moist before you put it in the freezer. Hand wash with mild soap and warm water. Allow to air dry COMPLETELY with flap open before freezing to prevent mold and frost from forming on cooler. Do not use bleach. Please note that PackIts are not washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, or microwave safe.

While I love the Packit idea, I have 3 and all of them have issues with staying closed because of the velcro. On one, the small piece of velcro on the front fell off within a couple of months and after less than a year of almost daily use, none of them will stay closed when carried by the handle. Please consider a design change.

I purchased the PACK IT lunch bag for my granddaughter for school lunch. After throwing more lunches due to total wet sandwiches and cookies I decided to return it and use a brown paper bag. As a retired senior the price of the pack it was an expense for me but would be worth it if as advertized it really did what it should, Total wet lunches for a fifth grader is not fun for me. When i tried to return it I was disappointed to find they would not take it back. Very unhappy news..

PackIt

Freezable Personal Cooler

Keep It Cool

Many of us have tried putting our reusable cooler totes in the freezer so the contents would stay cool until lunchtime at school and camp. It helps a little, but most totes aren’t designed for freezing. This one is – and it’s much better at holding the cold than ordinary lunch bags.

The PackIt personal cooler is a gel-lined bag that can keep contents cold for up to 10 hours without the need for messy ice or bulky cold packs. It will cool room-temperature items, too. The PackIt folds, so it’s easy to store inside
your freezer. Just pull it out when you’re ready to use it, fill it up, and you’re good to go. (It’s made from nontoxic, PVC-free and lead-free materials.)

PackIt is the invention of friends Jeannette Dirksen and Melissa Kieling, who came up with the idea while brainstorming about how to keep their kids’ lunches cold.

Chat with us this morning and we will share how coolers just got cooler.

great question! We spent about 2 years in research and development and condensation was a big concern for us. We use a coated polyester to keep the outside of the bag condensation free!!

I bought my PackIt for my wife and have now stolen it to use for myself. It really is a great way to keep my lunch cold without having to worry about the food going bad. I'm busy all day and sometimes don't get to eat my lunch until late in the day so PackIt was a great solution to my problem. To make it up to my wife I bought her the wine bag and she is more than happy. Great product!

I bought two bags and have used them all summer for kids' lunches at camp. Not only have they stood up to the hot weather, but also to handling by a 10 and 6 year old. I even had another camper come up to me and ask where his mom could get one! My kids have been very pleased, and so have I.

  • Katherine

We bought two, one for each child. So far so good, except they are saying that their sandwiches are a bit frozen when they eat them....I make the sandwiches in the morning and place them in the pack it. Does anyone have a suggestion as what to put the sandwich in so it just stays cold and does not freeze?? Thanks so much!

I live in Central Florida and the temps can reach 100 degrees by my son's lunch time at school. This product keeps his lunch cool and safe. Our only problem has been the velcro seems to not be working anymore. It does not want to stay closed and is coming apart. I gave him this as a Christmas gift and he wants a second pack-it, but I am worried about the velcro. I haven't decided what to do about this problem yet.

I have two of these bags for school lunches, and they have been super. The only problem though is that the velcro is beginning to fail. As soon as my kids pick up the bags, they pop open and we've had them less than a year. I imagine they should definitely be lasting longer than that?!?

We live in SoCal. Bought this in Feb for my 6th grader. We were having 80degree weather and by lunch time packit was cool but not cold. They keep lunches on cart outside.

This is brilliant! I can't tell you how many times my kids have complained about things in their lunchbox turning soggy or yucky. And, if they have leftovers, we usually have to throw them away after sitting in their lunch box all day. I have two high-schoolers and a middle-schooler who pack their lunches just about every day. I will definitely give these a try.

@Charity & @ Karen: My apologies for being "out-to-lunch" on this one. The small Smart Planet lunch box fits very nicely in the Packit lunch bag. The large lunch box is slightly longer (by 0.25"), so you will not be able to close the velcro tightly over the lunch bag.
