Jon Wye

Custom Leather Belts

Wrap Yourself in a Great Story

A Jon Wye belt does more than just hold up your pants. Each one tells a story. Jon’s designs are laid out horizontally, and the graphics are transferred onto the belts in a process that’s similar to how a tattoo artist might tattoo skin. It took him four years to perfect this secret technique, which ensures the designs won’t wear off.

The illustrations created by Jon and his collaborating artists are phenomenal. For example, the Zombies in Space design shows wild-eyed creatures infiltrating unsuspecting galaxies for a comic-book effect, and the graphic Paisley belt renders the traditional paisley form in a more casual, graffiti-like way.

Jon got his start making belt buckles while on a first date. His date wound up moving to Barcelona, but he kept up the craft, designing and making each piece in his Washington, D.C. workshop. We can’t wait to see what story he tells next.

Grommet Launch Conversation

I'm Jon Wye, inventor and artist, happy to have my belts featured at Daily Grommet today. These belts represent a marriage of art and innovation. I had the vision of creating a printed belt but I first needed to invent the machine that could do the job. Lucky for me, I was born a tinkerer and builder and I jumped into the challenge head first. I am certain you are going to appreciate the end result. I'm here to answer almost any questions you have, just don't ask me about my process because that's classified information!

When you order one of these incredibly funky belts, it will be custom made for you. So that Jon's team knows the size to make it please follow these instructions:

When you select your belt, you will then need to choose the size in inches.

    Grab your favorite fitting belt

Using a tape measure, measure the full length (in inches) of the belt from the tip of the buckle to the other end of the leather (tip to tip)

That is your belt length and the perfect size for you.

    * If you have an outrageously large belt buckle, measure leather to leather instead.

Thanks Amy! And to Lisa... HA... love it! The best part about my belts is that they are fun. You don't NEED them, but you might WANT one. NEED A BELT = The Gap ;)

John, your story about how your business got started is so endearing. It shows those of us, out here who are working on creating our own business, that inspiration can come from anywhere. Beautiful work! A metric ton of success to you, Sir! If I was thin enough to actually NEED a belt, I'd be ordering as we speak! ;)

Before starting Grommet I had one cool belt and the rest were purely functional. Since then I have bought every Grommet belt and it has really economically upgraded my style quotient. Like Osi says, you can wear a pretty simple outfit but totally elevate it with a unique belt. BUT I really thought I could not possibly see another belt that would be special enough to add to my robust Grommet collection. Think again....Jon you created something really wonderful. Now I have to pick between the four designs....

Today, I was lucky enough to visit Daily Grommet offices and "experience" this belt in person. One of the hardest things for men to find is a belt with a great buckle. With this one, along with many subtle details, and fantastically imaginative design themes comes a beautiful, tasteful, buckle. So, for once I didn't have to put a great belt down, at first sight.

Hey Adrian, Thanks so much! The buckles I design are make of stainless steel. I generally prefer the squared edge over the curve, so we end up with a simple buckle that oddly no one else thought to design. The belt is enough of a statement. The buckle should acknowledge that!

These look great! Is there any way we can see the designs on the belts a bit closer up and without their moving around, just to get a better sense of what it looks like? Thanks!

Question for Jon Wye: Can the design on the belt be made to order?? Would you do a design suggested by a customer for an individual belt? I'm sure you're price would go up but I'd like to know if that is possible and what you would charge.

@Fred - he does have a custom option. I will send you information directly.

When I saw these belts I thought to myself "I have seen these type belts before." And I was right. Here's a link to a decorative belt site out of Montreal. BTW I have nothing to do with this company, merely forwarding the link.

Do you have any buckles that work for people who have metal allergies. My guy gets rashes from metal belts...but I know he would really love that space zombies belt - it would make for a cool Xmas gift.

    11/17/2011 2:40 PM

@Eugenia: All the buckles we use are stainless steel with an oil coating. They don't have zinc which is the usual cause of allergic reactions. If you know stainless is fine then we are good to go, but other wise I don't know of any other non-metal options that would work for our belts.

I received a Britt Plaid Weave cuff as a gift and it is slightly too small. I love it... is there a way for me to stretch it? or should I try to return it and get another size? I tried to measure it and my measurements do not correlate to the sizes listed for this cuff (7.25, 7.5 and 7.75). Mine seems to be 6.5 inches measured on the inside when snapped, 8.5 inches measured on the outside when snapped...? Thanks for helping, I'd love to wear it!

  • Kathrine

@Katherine Klinger: Have you gotten any information for me? Should I just return it? I'd love to be able to wear it.

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team
    1/8/2012 3:20 PM

@Kathrine: I have been in touch with Jon and he says that if it is slightly small, then wetting the back of the cuff with water and then wearing it will stretch it out. Or you can wet it and snap it around a slightly larger can or bottle.

We also have a 30 day return policy so if it's more than a little small returning it may be the way to go.

I don't see cuffs listed as a choice to purchase (only belts).

I really love the weaved cuff displayed and would like to get one

    Thank you!

@ Sherry Fernandez: Sadly, the cuffs are no longer available. We'll be replacing the cuff photo with the belt. The belts are very unique and hope you'll consider it for your son.
