Hem Gems

Temporary Jean Tailor

Temporary Tailors

Love your favorite pair of jeans but not how the hems drag across the floor when you wear flats? Two friends devised a clever solution that’s as stylish as it is practical. Called Hem Gems, the invention lets you shorten your jeans instantly. Laura Gelberg and Julia Houck-Whitaker were inspired by Oprah’s 2007 search for the “next big idea.” They didn’t win the competition, but it challenged them to find a solution to a problem they both experienced: inflexible jean lengths. Their ingenious denim pins hold upturned pant legs in place (you can tuck the cuff up and inside, so the original hem still shows). They’re available in two styles -- a pyramid-shaped stud and a classic rivet -- that mimic the hardware on traditional jeans. You can choose silver or brass, and each set includes eight denim pins.

With these easy tacks, your jeans won’t drag on the ground and prematurely fray. When you want to pair your jeans with a higher heel, you can undo the pins in a snap and revert to the original length. They’re also great for traveling light: You can wear flats while you’re traveling then undo the pins for an evening in heels. Presto, instant tailoring.

We're thrilled to have Hem Gems featured as today’s Grommet. It's fall, and if you're like us, you're already wearing your jeans. But are some of your jeans just for high heels, and some just for flat shoes? The two of us created Hem Gems so you can wear your favorite pair of jeans with high heels or flats. Hem Gems allow you to temporarily adjust the length of your jeans so they're never too long. We would love to answer any questions you may have for us today about the product!

These are genius! I think they'd be a great gift for some of my pregnant friends who are trying to make their non-preggie jeans last longer by tucking under their cute belly.

This is a fantastic idea!! I used to use hem tape and other crazy solutions b/c tailoring is so expensive. Since I'm petite, these look like they will come in handy. I'm definitely picking up a package of these.

@Jill - great idea! I think that this is one of those Grommets that once you have it, you figure out many ways to use it! This picture is courtesy of lovemaegan.com who used them to peg her pants:

Other ideas are to use it to keep rolled up sleeves on a denim shirt in place, use on the hem of cut-off shorts (back side rolled to the front) for a stylish finish, a quick fix to a missing button. I bet there are many great solutions out there!

Brilliant! I'm not ambitious than Monique... I couldn't even be bothered with hem tape; had different jeans for different heel heights! Practical _and_ cute. Someone needs to give y'all a design award.

Please let me know so that I know my concerns are answered before I buy these.. oh and yes I am really excited to see this product! Thanks!

Horray!!!! I've had to cut off or hem every pair of jeans or pants I've bought in the last 20 yr! This is a God-send. Where have these been? What a great thing. I just don't know what else to say. Thank You!!!!!

Neha, They're quite durable - made of a sturdy metal and able to hold 3 layers of denim. We encourage people to remove them before washing, but we've left them on and they we're just fine!

I can think of a few people on my holiday list who'll be getting these! My question is what happens if you lose one? Is it possible to replace one gem individually, or would you need to purchase a whole set? Thanks.

To keep you from losing them we've included a pouch for you to carry them around. The backs are very secure so they'll stay fastened while wearing!

We just sell the set of 8, but I can tell you while testing I just wore 4 Hem Gems one night, two on each pant leg. I went out dancing and the temporary tailor job stayed in place perfectly. They are hard to loose while on the pants, but in the event that you do loose one or two, they will still be effective. Just like any other piece of jewelry, keep them in a safe place such as a jewelry box or in the Hem Gem pouch. Here is another photo courtesy of LoveMaegan.com that shows

    their jewelry like quality:

how tacky you mean you would actually wear those out? i suggest you buy 2 different lengths of jeans if i was out in a club and saw those on any lady i would move on to the next lady that could afford 2 pairs of jeans, and i am positive so would OPRAH.

@john rodz: you think it is a dumb idea b/c men get to buy their jeans in the length they want.

I am 5'3". Petites are a tiny too short and Regs are too long. I'm a bargain shopper and sometimes it costs as much for tailoring than the pants. Thanks for a great idea. I will be purchasing.

  • sharon
    9/30/2011 1:36 PM

@trish: I am 5/3 and 1/2 and in the same spot. I love my Gap Curvy's, but have been driving around with two pairs in the trunk to take to the local tailor just for this reason. I don't know if i love the metal divets sticking out.. but i'm considering this.

Is there a way to do this so it is invisible?

  • Katherine

@sharon: There are probably other hemming solutions out there that are invisible, but this one is meant to be decorative and does show. Good luck finding a solution that works for you!

Ahem, Mr Critic, you obviously don't know the woes of curvy (and not-so-curvy) women trying to find a good-fitting, good-looking pair of jeans! Once you find a great pair, you want to wear them everywhere...and the next pair on the rack usually doesn't fit the same way, despite being the same size and style.

This is a great solution for those of us who love heels but also wear other footwear. How about some similar designs for non-jeans, pants in other types of fabrics?

I'm a huge Daily Grommet fan, but sorry, this is the very FIRST of your items that has been a complete fail for me. I know many will disagree with me, but these look tacky to me, too. It reminds me of those late-night product commercials that advertise a similar item that lets you let out the waistband of your pants without tailoring.

Do they leave large pin holes in the jeans?

  • Katherine

@Wondering - no the pin pushes the denim fibers to the side and when it comes out, the fibers will go back in place.

I saw the pic and thought you were selling an extra strip of denim to snap on to lengthen jeans. I was so excited because my jeans are always about 1/2 to 1 inch too short. Oh well, let me know if you invent that.

    Hello Julia and Laura,

    I have a question!!

I have not tried out your product but it looks great. I was wondering if the "tacks" used are exclusively for a strong material like denim or whether they could be used with other types of pants...or perhaps you have some different "tacks"

  • Chew-Hoong
    Chew-Hoong – Grommet Team

@ Nora: Thanks for your interest. These "gems" are just for jean-type materials.

Love these, but feel that 4 on each pant leg is not enough. Ordering another set so can have 8 on each leg. Great idea and does not damage material.

I just got a set of Hem Gems today. I see mentions of a pouch in the comments above but my set did not come with a pouch. Is the pouch missing or has it been discontinued?
