Fabulous Fake

Celeb watchers know that a paper coffee cup is second only to a Birkin bag as the ultimate accessory for the chic and famous on the go. Lately everyone who’s anyone—from Hollywood hotties to powerful politicos—has been snapped by the paparazzi with a java in hand (well, except for that Suri Cruise, who still totes her bottle). A realistic silicone lid fits snugly to prevent spills and allows you sip discretely at staff meetings, soccer practice or while strolling city sidewalks. Just beware of camera flashes in the bushes. Does this dishwasher- and microwave-safe, ceramic "to-go" cup mean mugs are over?

It's amazing how something mod like this can make a classic coffee mug look dowdy. I think this is adorable - and could imagine getting four or six to stock a shelf with them at home. Can't wait to hear your feedback!

I have this cup, and I love it. Although it is porcelain, it feels very solid and not at all fragile, for some reason, it seems like it would be hard to break or even chip. Not at all like a typical handled coffee cup. (And I wish more products out there were as un-adorned as this one!)

An update on this Grommet. I used it for a few months before we selected it, so I was sure it was a winner. But a few months later, as I kept using it, I found that the seal on the silicone lid was loosening and releasing a slow dribble down the site of the cup. Yikes! I started avoiding using it...and feeling guilty.

But...a Grommet customer (Anne, above) told me you can buy replacement lids. For only $7, I was delighted to purchase two "I am not a Plastic Lids". I got plenty of use out of the first one and now I am good to go for a couple more years. Here is the link if you need new lids too.

Jules, if you only got a few months out of the first lid, why do you expect to get a couple of years out of the two replacement lids? Also, I'm concerned about the hunk of plastic the cup comes packaged in. Thanks for the product review but I think I'll take a pass on this one.

I own the Starbuck's version, which is identical to this one, but with the classic logo, flavor checkbox stripe, and a black lid: it looks just like the first disposable cups SB's made, and it holds 12 ozs. More importantly, it's reusable, so you never have to throw it out the window of your car or leave it on a window sill at the bus stop (which so many low-information Americans inexplicably do). I'll get this "vanilla" one, too!

Hi Mary, On the lid thing...I got over a year out of the first lid. Assuming it was not defective that must be the life of one lid. So I am figuring I will get two years out of two. I hear you on the packaging...It's a subject we address a lot with many Grommets. It's usually already done by the time we see a Grommet. But we do influence future packaging when we can.
