Pickle Love

Pickles. You either hate them, like my husband, or you inhale them, like me. It must be some sort of genetic taste bud thing. I come from a long line of pickle lovers. When I was a kid, I called my grandmother’s potato salad “pickle salad” because that was a more accurate label given the potato-to-pickle ratio she whipped up. I like them sour, half-sour, sweet, kosher, not kosher, dill, gherkin, cornichon, and I’m particularly thrilled with the latest pickle trend I’ve noticed: spicy! This gift basket from Root Cellar Preserves features three of their most popular gourmet pickles. Sweet & Spicy mixes slices of classic cucumbers with chunks of cauliflower, banana peppers, pepperoncini, onions and red bell peppers in a sweet and hot brine. Apple Cinnamon Pickles, which are sweet cucumber slices with just a touch of apple and cinnamon flavor. And dills, always a favorite. Choose one of each or Root Cellar Preserves is dedicated to bringing back the art of pickling and has established a fund from their profits to help preserve early American homesteads (where much of that pickling tradition took hold). Their products are delicious, and sure to please the pickle lovers in your family. Of course, if there are no pickle lovers in your life, I’d love some more. Hint, hint.

Canning and pickling have been a family tradition of ours since I was a young girl living in Upstate New York. Today, preserving fruits and vegetables has become a lost art. We started Root Cellar Preserves to reintroduce those wholesome pickled products once

commonplace, but now hard to find. We hope you enjoy them, and they

remind you of your own family traditions.

    Root

Cellar Preserves is committed to the preservation of early American

homesteads. Many of these buildings, which represent the historical

foundation of our country are giving way to disrepair, neglect and

rural development. Root Cellar Preserves has established a fund from

its proceeds to support local community efforts to preserve these

    homesteads for future generations.

We hope you will enjoy our favorite recipes, while supporting an important cause.

The Sweet and Spicy Pickles are one of my all-time favorite snacks. I frequently buy every jar at our local grocer when I need to re-stock! Susan, I think I heard you say your children each have a special sandwich they've created using your products -- could you share those yummy recipes?

Ooh these look delicious; and they'd "work" for us as I like sweet and my husband loves both dill and spicy.

I also like the idea that some of their profits go towards preservation of American Homesteads.

There's a nice extra freebie in this sampler. Beyond the three jars in the basket, Susan is giving everyone who orders a delicious Corn and Bean Salsa. It's in the video, but I'm mentioning it for folks who like to just read text.

I've tried all three in this gift package--fresh, crisp and complex. Not the one-note salty mush from the pickle aisle at the supermarket! Really good, especially the sweet & spicy mix.

My husband and I have tried many of the Root Cellar products. We have yet to find one that we don't absolutely love! The Sweet & Spicy pickle mix and the Bean and Corn salsa are our very favorites. Everyone should try these -- they are head and shoulders above anything you will find in the typical supermarket!

To elaborate on Barbara's question...yes, my two daughters have created sandwichs bearing each of their names. The "Isabel Sandwich" (Isabel is 10) is a grilled cheese sandwich with the addition of Root Cellar Preserves' Corn Relish and sliced turkey. Not to be outdone by her older sister, (Ellie is 5) the "Eleanor Sandwich" is basically the "Isabel" minus the turkey. Both are really delicious and always popular in our house.
