Music to Your Ears

You don’t need to be a classical music fan to fall in love with Kristina Reiko Cooper’s new album, Stone and Steel. When this critically acclaimed bi-continental musician (she divides her time between Tel Aviv and New York City) set out to make her latest album, she wanted to reach out to a broad audience. She decided to remain true to her classical roots, but at the same time create a unique new sound accessible to a contemporary audience. Inspired by the juxtaposition of the ancient and the modern that surrounds her living in Israel, Kristina combines the best traditions of classical music with a modern edge to create a hauntingly beautiful new sound. Stone and Steel, scored for cello, piano, and percussion, revisits classics from Gregorian chants to Elizabethan songs in a fresh new way that has connected with audiences around the world. Stone and Steel is the ideal gift for music lovers—and don’t forget to order a copy for yourself. Just press “play,” and let yourself be transported to another world. Buy now on iTunes!

I am pleased to have my new CD featured at Daily Grommet today. This is a project very close to my heart, because I believe that it represents who I am as a person and an artist. I am a modern, cosmopolitan woman, having lived most of my life in big, urban jungles, like New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Tokyo, and Tel Aviv, yet, I play an ancient instrument, from 1786, and usually play music that was written hundreds of years ago. Now that I spend so much time in Israel, I am constantly reminded of the incredible juxtaposition of thousands of years of weighty history, existing alongside the modernity of this unique country. On this CD, Stone and Steel, I musically represent this dichotomy, by taking VERY old music, and rework it in a fresh new way. One of the things I love about being a cellist is that I'm always facing out so that I can see the reactions and emotions of my audience, so I especially look forward to reading your comments and answering any questions you may have about my music. It will be nice to hear from you.

I love this CD and so do my kids. It is very soothing with upbeat melodies as well. Kristina is the epitome of a busy mom entrepreneur. I met Kristina and baby Zack at her CD launch party in NY last November. Since then, they have been traveling the world on tour. Thanks Kristina for showing us that mom entrepreneurs really can have it all!

Traci - you're so right, Kristina is truly an amazing mom-preneur! When I spoke to her, I told her right off that I really don't know much about classical music - but this CD is making me rethink that. It's been so wonderful to listen to as I'm working late at night, and it's fun for dinner parties too -- great conversation starter, such beautiful music ... at times soothing and then so powerful. I think knowing Kristina's story and understanding how devoted she is to her art makes it all the more compelling.

Beautiful music. Creating a bridge between classical and contemporary sounds, it's a joy to hear.

It will appeal to a broad segment of the audience. I'm looking forward to the day when I can experience the music live in concert. Until then "Stone and Steel" will suffice very nicely.

Very innovative and lovely. Also Ms. Cooper's personal story is very inspiring (or is it Dr. Cooper, as I read on the website she has a doctorate in music from Juilliard?). Thank you Daily Grommet for sharing.
