Bring on the Heat

Your home, office, and car are all climate controlled—why not your clothes? Polartec has introduced a new line of heated outerwear that will keep you toasty on the coldest of days. These innovative jackets and vests actually feature a panel of conductive fabric (there’s a small battery pack, but no wires) that works much like heated seats or an electric blanket. It’s revolutionary, but no surprise coming from Polartec, the company that introduced Polarfleece 30 years ago, and fabrics made from recycled materials 15 years ago! Their cutting edge Active Heat technology was designed to keep your core warm for up to six hours—plenty of time to root for your favorite team, walk the dog, and hit the playground with the kids. The rechargeable remote controlled battery can be set to low, medium, or high depending on the weather, and it can be turned off once you get into your car or back inside. The jackets and vests come in both men’s and women’s sizes, and the heating system is removable so after a long day outdoors you can just toss the jacket into the wash. Style, comfort, and warmth? Even Old Man Winter is going to want in on this action!

@Tricia....all of us at Grommet are really excited about your engineering breakthrough! I'm so happy you could tell the story in person. I have two questions that I know people will ask: 1) What is an "IR study", as mentioned in the video? And why do you put the heat panels in different places for men and women?

The Polartec Heat Vest would be perfect for my long walks on the rail trail here in the mountains - I'm in and out of the sun and it makes a huge difference in how cold it feels. It'd also be helpful when I run out to fill the bird feeders...heck, I could go on and on and on....

Hi Jules - those are two good questions! 1) IR is short for infrared, a scientific term for "heat". Our IR study used a special IR camera that can detect different levels of heat and display them using visible colors, letting us see the effect of our Heat system. 2) The Heat panels are in different places for men and women because men and women are shaped differently. To give women good heating and a flattering cut in the garment, we decided to place the panel vertically between the shoulder blades. Men seemed to prefer to have the panel across the lower back, so that's where we placed it for them.

Dressing for outdoor activities is such a beast -- it's fabulous that one garment can take you through so many of the conditions! This would be perfect for cross country skiing where you're cold at first, then heat up, but then catch a chill when you're in the cool-down phase.

I would most likely "live" in this vest. I have low blood pressure and wear multiple layers to keep warm. How nice it would be NOT to look like a Michelin man. How nice would it be to look fashionable with less layers yet more warmth! It would be the "go to item' in my closet, like my fuzzy slippers. "ahhhhh, warmth, comfort, security." I work as a garden Photo Editor for a magazine and am often in the garden at pre-dawn and sunset hours - when the air is the coolest. This vest would allow me sanity in the cold - no one likes a grouch, and I get grouchy in the cold ! This vest would be my new best friend!

i would use the Polartec® Heat® jacket for work. I work as a case manager and am in the field all day, so in the winter I get very cold and I live in Central PA. I also walk my dogs 4 times a day, so I am out often. I have been waiting for something like this.

This is the coolest product! I live in Maine and am forced to face the elements as I walk my dog several times a day. I also coach a soccer team in the fall where the weather can be unpredictable, to say the least. I would live in this vest and shout from the hilltops to anyone that would listen to me when I would scream, "I love this vest and I am finally, consistently warm outside!"

I love your website, too! Jennifer L. is my favorite. She is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable about all of your products! Keep up the good work!

I don’t have a good story to tell except to state that I am always cold! The inventor of heated car seats must have had me in mind because I use mine in the summer which drives my husband crazy every time he drives my car. When winter comes I take my permanent seat on the floor in front of the wood burning stove having to wrestle with the cat for the position (She is a very large Maine Coon, wrestle is the key word)! A Polartec® Heat® jacket is that next great invention, the portability of warmth! Thank you!

OUTDOOR SPORTS in a TEXAS WINTER!

My 11 yr old daughter just began refereeing, and here in Texas, the winter temperatures are 90% temperate and 10% colder than, well, ICE. That's right -- there's not soft, quiet 20s with lovely snow blanketing the ground. There's sleet and ice and sudden freezing temperatures and it whips through Frisco with such ferocity on torrid winds they knock over everything not nailed down.

And in the middle of this chaos, out on the fields with no windbreaks at all, making 20 degree temperatures cut through you like -20 degree shards of ice, my slim, petite 11 yr old daughter will layer up with her ref shirt on the outside and freeze beyond blue lips and numbed hands so the game can go on.

We grab the players when they're off the field and stand them in front of the hand dryers of the bathrooms before they must return to the field. At least they warm up on the field as they play. Adults and other bystanders wear coats AND blankets, angling their bodies away from the wind.

Only the ref stands alone, braving the icy winds and selflessly officiating the game.

I would layer this vest beneath my daughter's ref shirt before wrapping myself up in a blanket and turning my back to the wind as I watch her referee.

I have a 30 year old disabled son. He currently walks everywhere he needs to go - his daily outpatient program, all meetings and doctor visits, etc. He loves walking, he has lost 100 pounds since he started but it can get very cold out in the Western Md area. I'd love for him to be able to wear something like this. On very cold days I'm always worried that he will not make it the programs he should be attending for his health!

My daugher is a certified athletic trainer and works outdoors at collegiate sporting events in all sorts of weather and indoors at ice rinks. She has and wears several PolarTec vests and jackets already, but this would be great for keeping her warm on the sidelines and would likely improve her mobility as she works since she could reduce the number of layers she typically has underneath. What a great idea!

I would love one of these vests. I am a mother of two figure skaters and I am at the cold rink almost everyday, sitting huddled in the cold bleachers. Polartec is the best! I had one of the old Northface polartec heat jackets but it has been worn out and the old technology with two big camcorder batteries for power looks funny. This new version looks very stylish and comfortable. I'm sure the new technology is better with the heat panel in the back instead of the front. Anyone who is in a cold climate would love this vest!!!!

He has no car, walks everywhere, and when a native remarked how beautiful the MN winters are, he said: "How would I know? If I lift my head up, my eyelashes freeze!" The vest wouldn't help with his eyelashes, but his core would be protected....which would warm this mother's heart. So, a two-fer!

I would love to win this vest for my dear husband; it is just what he needs. We live in New England and he is on blood thinners and is cold all the time. His being anemic doesn't help either. With heating oil being so high, we can't afford to keep the thermostat up enough to keep him warm. He also has to do a lot of outside work so he really bundles up but most of the day, being retired, he sits around the house wearing thermal underwear and about 3-4 layers of clothes on top of that and he is still cold! Meanwhile, I (being of a certain age) am always hot so we are quite the pair! LOL. I wish I could give him something this lovely to keep him warm, so I thank you for having this contest and giving us a chance.

This vest would come in handy when we go out sledding with the boys. We live in Wisconsin and it's supposed to snow tonight so we'll likely be out tomorrow with the sleds. The boys never want to go back into the house. We're always getting chilled because we're not going down the hill and running back up as much. This would be perfect!

We live in the northeast and our heating bills are extremely high, so high that my hubby, whom I affectionately refer to as the "thermostat troll" constantly sets our thermostats to between 58 and 60 degrees F *all the time*! The only time I can get it set higher (to 62 degrees) is if I have a cold or flu! I could really really use this to keep me warm and hubby in his happy "thermostat troll" setting range! Thanks for the contest!

I am a crossing guard for pre-school through 8th grade every day from 6:50 - 9:05 a.m. and again from 1:45 - 3:30 p.m. 5 days a week in the rain, sleet, hail and snow. I am required to stand out in the elements for the safety of the children and the motorists at my 4-way STOP which at school opening times is extremely busy. The new Polartec Heat Jacket or Vest will be an extreme aid in warming me as the wind roars down the street between the trees and houses, resembling a wind tunnel, to me in the fiercest of weather. Although I wear Polartec products and am an advocate of all of the Polartec products this would be the cream of the crop. I am so excited to win the Jacket or the Vest.

Standing in the cold here in Michigan to get into the packed casino. Every Thursday the casino here in middle Michigan runs a promotion. You get 20.00 free on your players club card and I went there last night and it was FREEZING. There was a line up all around a block or so and all of us people were shivering so bad but it was a free thing and all of us are stupid to wait in line. I had to wait in line for 45 mins in the cold. The time i got into the casino i couldn't even move. I was cold stiff. So next week i will be there in that line again and would love to have this to stay warm. I know alot of people will ask about the vest too.

This is ideal for us ladies who are older (read in menopause), as I keep our thermostat down to 64 in the house! With this cozy vest on inside the house, I could take it off when I have one of those pesky hot flashes or leave it on in our 64 degree house and fight the electric bill! It would obviously be perfect also for my walks outside in our hilly, woodsy state park, or visiting my sister at her home in the Sierra Mountains. It get so unbearably cold on the slopes and sometimes it can really affect my ski runs so being able to wear gear that can keep you warm for up to 6 hours is truly incredible! Every day, after walking my dogs, I give them a nice little treat to reward them. I made the mistake of leaving the treats in my winter coat from our walks. Needless to say, the next day the pockets of my coat were strewn about the house and no treats were to be found. I knew who the culprits were. But now my dilemma is that I have no decent outside winter wear and this heated vest would be perfect. I promise I will remember not to leave treats in it.

This would be ideal Dog duty gear. The huge open fields behind our home are dog romping heaven, and in the winter months, its a task to get them to come in. Sometimes the wind bites so hard you just want to curl up on the porch til the little beggers get it all out of their systems, but i don't like letting roam without supervision. This would be a big help.

It seems like the perfect product!!!!!! As a person who is always cold I would use the vest as a layer under my regular jacket on very cold days. While watching my kids soccer games in Kansas the wind is brutal the vest would work very well as my second layer and if the day warms up I can take off my jacket and still be warm with the vest on. I also think it would be great for travel which I do a lot. It would be perfect there as well, light weight to pack, I would feel safe not having to bring another jacket while travelling one trip in different climates. Did I mention shopping? In the stores I get hot so the vest would be great again…I could turn it down or off completely. I think I would wear it most when shopping since I do that every day. It would keep me warm I am sure. Would you be able to get extra batteries so if one is at a soccer tournament all day and the battery runs out one could just insert another one? I think being able to wear the vest close to the body and under other garments is a good idea especially for someone who does not like how their belly looks when wearing tight clothes.

My husband gave me a jacket for Christmas and I absolutely LOVE it! My hobby is riding and caring for my 2 horses. I stable them in an unheated barn in the Chicago, Illinois area, so the winters can be quite cold and windy. The jacket is perfect for winter active wear. Riding is one of those activities in which you start out cold and then become warm and sweaty during the ride, then you can catch a chill during cool-down. With the jacket, I can set the temp. to low while I am grooming and tacking up my horse. Then I turn it off during my ride. Later, during the end of the cool-down period, I turn it on again to take the chill away. On most days, I only need the low setting. However, I have used the medium setting on zero degree weather. The only minor discomfort I have experienced is that my arms tend to get cool if I do not keep moving and active. I usually wear the jacket over the top of a turtle neck and long underwear. Then, I put a light weight nylon jacket over the top of the polar heat jacket to help hold in a little more heat and also to keep the jacket clean (horses tend to wipe their mouths and sneeze on your clothes a lot). Would it be possible to have a little heat on the arms as well?

I would highly recommend this jacket to anyone who is active and wants to be comfortable with less bulk. It is a lot easier to participate in any kind of winter sport if you are not weighted down by the traditional layers of clothing.

@Ellen R Thanks so much for taking the time to tell us all about your actual experience with the jacket. Being so innovative, it is really helpful to have someone who has used it describe the plusses and minuses. It's a big purchase decision so people will appreciate your telling them about your opinions. I am sure Tricia will be alert to your suggestion about adding heat panels to the arms.

Polartec Heat

Vest and Jacket

Bring on the Heat

Your home, office, and car are all climate controlled—why not your clothes? Polartec has introduced a new line of heated outerwear that will keep you toasty on the coldest of days.

These innovative jackets and vests actually feature a panel of conductive fabric (there’s a small battery pack, but no wires) that works much like heated seats or an electric blanket. It’s revolutionary, but no surprise coming from Polartec, the company that introduced Polarfleece 30 years ago, and fabrics made from recycled materials 15
years ago!

    2/20/2009 12:21 PM

I would love the jacket. I grew up in Hawaii and have never quite adapted to cold weather on the mainland. Kansas is especially rough because of the crazy winds. I'd like to win this vest for my son, a college student in Minnesota, where it's been -30 for weeks at a time this winter.

This vest would be awesome in the coldest climates (my base is Chicago) and ones that aren't too frigid. It would take up so little space in my suitcase. I would use it ALL the time.

It's stylish enough that I could wear it out on my layovers in any city. This vest is just genius!

Never have liked cold weather. The older I get, the colder I get. This winter has been the l o n g e s t and doesn't show signs of being over for quite a while. With this "handy-dandy" vest, I could actually assist my husband shoveling this nasty white stuff that insists on settling all around us. Also, my birds would appreciate being fed a little earlier in the morning - I wouldn't have to "wait until it warms up" to stock the feeders.

I am an avid skier and this amazing Polartec Heat Vest and Jacket would be just perfect to wear in our harsh winter weather when I am skiing! It get so unbearably cold on the slopes and sometimes it can really affect my ski runs so being able to wear gear that can keep you warm for up to 6 hours is truly incredible! I also am always outside in the cold winter months. We have 2 feisty dogs that we walk at least 3 times a day even when the wind chill is below zero! Having a Polartec jacket or vest to quickly put on and take the dog out for their walk in sub zero weather would make it so much more pleasant and comfortable! I am so pleased to learn about these products today and thank you so much for the opportunity to enter!

I also walk to the school near my office to pick up a little girl who I tutor and I layer the vest under my down coat and it makes the walk sooo much more fun!

Wow, where to begin, This baby is very versatile and I could use it for a number of things. Anything from Hunting and trout fishing, to watching the local kids play sports. I could use walking my dog, to just have as peace of mind in the car for those unexpected breakdowns. Could save a life and I want one. Thanks......

I could really use this on my winter runs. Something to keep me motivated since I'm a baby about the cold.

The Polartec Heating Vest looks awesome! I have a 90 min commute to work, in a crappy car with no heat. I live in Minnesota a freeze everyday. This vest would "warm my soul", and then some! I would be grateful for an entry to this drawing!
