Lose Your Keys

August is a smart door lock that gives access to your home without needing keys. Once connected to the August app, the door senses you approaching and unlocks. It’s like your house is saying hello. Now convenience is nice, but August is secure, too. Think about why hotels have keyless locks: they can determine not only who gets entry but when. You can do the same for your relatives, friends, the babysitter, the cleaner, the dog walker. Give them automatic access with the August app, at the times you designate. Add and omit guests with ease via August’s smart phone app, like out-of-towners staying at your place. Or, make a guest list next time you have a party (for a true VIP feel). There are similar products on the market, but August stands out by working with the deadbolt that’s already on your door. Just a simple screwdriver gets the job done. With August in place, you can control who has access to your front door and when. No more fumbling for keys, making copies for friends, or hiding one under the welcome mat. In fact, no more keys at all.

    @Leslie Great Questions!

how is it installed [drill-in vs.,stuck on]

AUGUST: August replaces the thumb turn on your current standard deadbolt. No additional drilling is required.

how does it recognize me vs the neighbor/criminal,

AUGUST: You create an account in the August app. The phone will then act as your key! Each time you interface with the lock, you app will validate that you are authorized with the August servers.

    how is"lock vs unlock' achieved,?

AUGUST: The motor within the August app controls your lock. When you first install, you will go through a calibration process so the lock knows where locked and unlocked are.

Can i open the door from a "remote"app" or only by hard-pressing keys?

AUGUST: You can use the August app to operate your lock when you are in Bluetooth range. Should you need to operate it from away from home, we recommend the August Connect - this will allow remote access to your August.

How do know if entry is by 'acceptable"people such as maid, pet-sitter, etc?

AUGUST: You are able to send and remove invites real time. Each time someone tries to use your August, their phone will have to get validation that it is authorized from the August server.

This looks pretty awesome! I'm very much a techy person, and I'm always looking for new gadgets that make life simpler. Not having to fumble with a house key would be cool.

But, what about if the batteries on August die? Am I then locked out of the house until I can get in to replace them, or does the device notify me through the app that the batteries are getting low so I can replace them ahead of time?

  • Kyle
    Kyle
    5/13/2015 2:25 PM

  • Monika
    Monika – Special Guest
    5/13/2015 2:26 PM

@Kyle August will notify you when your batteries are at 25% and continue to notify you until you replace them (or they die), but you should have plenty of warning to be able to replace them before they die. You can also always use your existing key as August does not change the outside of your door.

  • Monika

    5/13/2015 3:51 PM

Question. The product indicates that if you walk up to the door (from the outside) it will automatically unlock if you are inside the house and you walk up or by the door will it unlock as well? I could see this being a security concern if it does.

  • Monika
    Monika – Special Guest
    5/13/2015 3:49 PM

@Dan We use geofencing to prevent unlocks from the inside. In order for Auto-Unlock to trigger you need to leave your geofence (about 200 meters) and return home. Let us know if you have any other questions.

  • Mike

    5/13/2015 10:46 PM

Hi Elizabeth, Monika can correct me if I'm wrong, but you will still be able to lock the door by hand as you do with your lock now. The August lock works with a key as well. You don't NEED to have your phone to make it work, which makes it a great bridge for your home's technological transition.

@J Our support team is able to sell a tapered deadbolt that helps in most of these cases. If your door is significantly not aligned, you may need a locksmith or handyman to help get your door better aligned. Shoot us a note at [email protected] and we can help with compatibility for your door.

@Kyle Aha! I saw it on the info listed on the 'Buy Now' page.. Your external lock is unchanged, and you can still use a key if need be. Thanks!

@Kyle August will notify you when your batteries are at 25% and continue to notify you until you replace them (or they die), but you should have plenty of warning to be able to replace them before they die. You can also always use your existing key as August does not change the outside of your door.

    Hi Monika,

What is the battery life expectancy given 4 cycles a day (2 lock and 2 unlock) on average.

    Thanks.

@John A lot would depend on your door and how tough it was to operate. Currently we are seeing 6-9 months in the field.

SO you must have your phone with you to open door... Do you have to use/open an app to then open door or is it like the new cars, you just get so close and open the door. Like I would not have to take phone out of my purse

@Yvonne We have a feature called Auto-Unlock that is currently available in our iOS app. This feature make sit so you don't have to take your phone out, it will automatically open.

Question. The product indicates that if you walk up to the door (from the outside) it will automatically unlock if you are inside the house and you walk up or by the door will it unlock as well? I could see this being a security concern if it does.

@Dan We use geofencing to prevent unlocks from the inside. In order for Auto-Unlock to trigger you need to leave your geofence (about 200 meters) and return home. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Does August Connect require a WIFI signal to operate?

@David No, August does not require a Wi-Fi signal to operate. August does not have Wi-Fi on board. We offer the August Connect accessory if you did want the capability of Wi-Fi.

What if your phone dies before you get home? Does the lock itself require an electrical charge of some kind? If so, what if the power goes out? Can I still get in my house?

@Sherry If your phone dies, you can always use your existing key or borrow a phone from a friend. August does not require electricity inside the home, it runs off of 4 AA batteries.

any chance there will be a double cylinder option in the future?

@JL Currently there is nothing planned for this. Double Cylinder deadbolts on main doors can pose a safety risk, so we have opted for Single Cylinder Compatibility.

If your door is locked and you are inside the house and want to leave without your phone....how do you unlock the door? Likewise if I'm locking the house for the night, how do I lock the door if I don't have my phone?? Thanks!

Hi Elizabeth, Monika can correct me if I'm wrong, but you will still be able to lock the door by hand as you do with your lock now. The August lock works with a key as well. You don't NEED to have your phone to make it work, which makes it a great bridge for your home's technological transition.
