A New Ball Game for Laundry

You wouldn’t think of throwing a handful of noxious chemicals onto your fresh clean laundry, right? Well, take a look at the ingredients used to make most dryer sheets, fabric softeners and plastic dryer balls. You may be unpleasantly surprised. (Is PVC really something you want mixed in with your clean laundry?) Lisa Borden, a frequent contributor to Daily Grommet, has taken a completely different approach with her handmade dryer balls. She wanted only pure and natural ingredients, so she started with 100% virgin wool, formed into a ball and slipped into an organic cotton drawstring bag. Tossed into your dryer, these chemical-free balls can cut down on static cling and reduce drying time by as much as 40% -- a real plus for your electric bill. And they’re reusable. Lisa’s woolly BaaLLS are unscented, but if you prefer, you can add a drop of your favorite essential oil (lavender is nice). You won’t miss the chemicals!

Hi Daily Grommet fans. My name is Lisa Borden and I've been a fan of Daily Grommet for a long time. My design and marketing company specializes in working with companies who manufacture green, responsible products. A handful of our clients have been featured here at Daily Grommet. I'm thrilled that today it is my turn for our own product to be the Grommet of the Day.

Watch the video, read the story, and let us know what you think. If you are ready to banish harmful products from your dryer, leaving your clothes fresh and clean while saving energy at the same time, then it's time for you to get some BaaLLS of your own.

@Regan Caton: My daughter has (as do I) an extreme sensitivy to wool and cannot wear it at all, and we have no issue using these in our dryer. If it's a severe allergy, obviously that could be another story. They are 100% wool.

Hi, I would love to replace my dryer sheets but enjoy the soft scents. Would I need to add my essential oil to the balls everytime I use them or maybe weekly? Also, how many of the balls do you recommend using at a time- all 4 in each load? Thanks!

  • Lisa

@Nicole: Throw all 4 BaaLLS in your dryer and leave them. It's the easiest household routine you could possibly have!

As far as scents go, if you buy good essential oils, they can last up to 2 - 3 weeks even...but remember, clean doesn't smell like anything.

It's undyed, chemically unprocessed felted wool, right? Doesn't it smell like a wet dog? Not something I would want freshening my laundry. I'm a fiber artist & have felted undyed wool in my washing machine many many times, and the smell can linger for _days_.

@Kay L: BaaLLS are made from 100% pure virgin wool (doesn't harbor bacteria)and there is absolutely no scent which is why we love them (because if it stinks, it stinks!). I have been using my dryer balls for a long time now, and they have never picked up a scent (unless you put essential oil in them).

I already use an environmentally friendly fabric softener (7th Generation). However, wrinkles are a big problem, esp. with the high speed spin cycle in the washer - the clothes come out crumpled and they seem to stay that way as they are dried. How exactly do the wool balls reduce wrinkling? It is purely a mechanical action of the balls bouncing around or does it have something to do with the wool? Why not just put tennis balls in the dryer?

  • Lisa
    Lisa – Special Guest
    3/2/2011 3:37 PM

@Jamie: it is just simply the bouncing around...but also that these are pure wool. In fact, part of this idea started because I always put tennis balls into my kids snowsuits (the sleeves) to help them bounce around and dry them quicker. Keep in mind, environemtnally friendly dryer sheets still are something that you need to perpetually purchase - packaging and landfill and cost to us all.

Obviously line drying is best, but when we are using a dryer, these were my favourite option! Plastic free and people/planet friendly!

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team
    3/2/2011 3:52 PM

@Tom: I used to work for a textile mill that manufactured athletic fabrics which included that warning. Fabric softeners and dryer sheets actually coat the fibers of your clothing which diminishes the effectiveness of a technical fabric that is treated to wick moisture away from your skin. A wool dryer ball would be fine when used with these fabrics. However, because these fabrics tend to dry quickly and don't wrinkle, the main benefits of the dryer balls would be appreciated more with your natural fibers than your technical fibers.

Many apologies to those of you who are trying to purchase today's Grommet. BaaLLS were very popular and we sold all of our inventory in a matter of hours. Trust that we're doing everything possible to get more inventory quickly. It's often hard to predict the popularity of a product when it's brand new, it's kind of like uncharted waters. No one in this comment stream has addressed the wool balls effectiveness in reducing or eliminating static cling. An on line comparison of other dryer balls states they are effective in all but preventing or reducing static cling as claimed. Could you please address the wool dryer balls effectiveness with static cling?

    Thank you.

  • Lisa
    Lisa – Special Guest
    3/21/2011 8:50 PM

@Patricia: I don’t write how much it reduces static cling since it depends what people use in their washer – detergents vs eco happy soaps…vinegar in the washload is like fabric softener and makes static less too – there are so many options and combinations (and climates and seasons affect it too), I don’t want to promise something that isn’t delivered. However if someone goes from using NOTHING in their dryer and starts using BaaLLS they will notice a significant decrease in static. If they are using conventional fabric softener sheets and replace with BaaLLS, they are doing their part for the world and getting rid of VERY toxic chems, but the trade off might be more static. I take static over carcinogens in my laundry everyday.

    Lisa,

Thank you. I ordered the 4 inch balls today. I stopped using dryer sheets years ago and use eco happy soaps, but not vinegar - good tip.

None of the other balls I checked reduce static cling - wishful thinking.

Second question: What is the resulting difference between the 3 inch and the 4 inch balls? I am considering purchasing some for friends and cost makes a difference. Also do you know if Daily Grommett reduces shipping costs for multiple item purchases or charges the same shipping cost per item?

    Thanks again.

    Pat

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team
    3/29/2011 2:09 PM

@Patricia OBrien: The 4" BaaLLS cut down on dry times even further. The shipping charges do vary based upon the amount you order. It's not the full shipping charge for each item ordered. These would make great, unique gifts. Your friends are very lucky.

Are you a knitter? I'm thinking someone who works with wool would think of this great idea!

But we're thrilled to know that you like these we're working on getting more BaaLLS manufactured and shipped here from Canada quickly.

@Virginia - Daily Grommet is the only US retailer to carry BaaLLS at the moment and we are working very closely with the Canadian Owner of BaaLLS, Lisa Borden,to get inventory here fast by the third week of March or earlier if possible.

Why not just let us order them today and ship when you get the new stock in?? Some of us may not remember to look for them again in a couple of weeks. The memory is one of the first things to go... Thanks.

@ECohan: Yes, that's what we're trying to do. We need to get an ETA on expected delivery so that everyone knows what to expect. As soon as we have that date we will post it and resume taking orders.

Goodness Gracious! I got my woolly balls a few days ago and used them yesterday! I loved the packaging first off and then the name just slays me, too. I am glad to proclaim that these 4 orbs are bomb! I love love love them and plan on getting some for my Mom who is very tight with her money and reuses the sheet brands until they disintegrate, for Christmas. They work just like is advertised here. I love this product and just amazed by how it works.

My husband.."What are these BALLS in the dryer?" He rolled his eyes when i told him..

We're happy to confirm that we'll have limited inventory on some larger 4" Baalls wool dryer balls that Lisa was able to send, and they'll be ready to ship on 3/21. The 3" Baalls remain out of stock, and we're all working on bringing those back as well.

No one in this comment stream has addressed the wool balls effectiveness in reducing or eliminating static cling. An on line comparison of other dryer balls states they are effective in all but preventing or reducing static cling as claimed. Could you please address the wool dryer balls effectiveness with static cling?

    Thank you.

    Pat

@Patricia OBrien: The 4" BaaLLS cut down on dry times even further. The shipping charges do vary based upon the amount you order. It's not the full shipping charge for each item ordered. These would make great, unique gifts. Your friends are very lucky.

I just wanted to say that I bought the 3" balls when they first arrived in my email inbox! I thought this sounded too incredibly to be true. Well, I got them, threw them in the dryer and they have been hard at work ever since. I love these and plan on buying more for relatives for the holidays. Its TRUE! They totally cut down on my dryer's drying time. I turn it on and before I know it, I am going back to the laundry room to remove the dry, crisp clothes. They are no ragged at all...no fraying no nothing..just hard working! A really great product. I appreciate the idea and results!

I see that the 3" size is still out of stock... any updates?

Why is there a 4" size? Depending on the dryer do you need a different size?

@Ed: We sold out of the 3" size on the first day of the feature. While new stock is being created, Lisa had some 4" inventory that we took in. The 4" does help to cut down dry times even more for any dryer size. We will have the 3" back in stock later this summer.

I received my baalls within a few days of my order. They are well made and a have a nice feel. I noticed immediately that my clothes felt much softer after using the baalls in the dryer.

I am anxious to see how they soften bed linens that I hang on the line to dry and then put in the dryer.
