Trendy Boxed Lunch

Lunch Break

Some things aren’t meant to mingle until just the right moment. Stir your yogurt and granola together prematurely, and you’ll wind up with mushy, swollen oats when you sit down to eat breakfast. Add dressing to greens too soon, and your salad is wilted come lunchtime.

But that won’t happen with black + blum’s new lunch
containers, which elevate the common lunchbox to stylish new heights. Inspired by Japanese bento boxes, the Box Appetit has an inner dish so you can keep foods separate and a removable sauce pot for condiments and dressing. The glass-like lid has a recessed dipping area—perfect for wasabi or soy sauce. It also has an ingenious locking mechanism that creates a watertight seal so your lunch won’t leak.

For soups, the Thermo Pot is one-piece pot with a magnetic spoon and a cork lid. The creators are Dan Black and Martin Blum, who founded the black + blum studio in London. The two designers have a reputation for creating modern products that are innovative, practical, and charming—the recipe for a perfect lunch.

Does it keep foods cold or soups hot?

@Mary: No, you would still need to keep your items refrigerated or microwave them to warm them up again. If you are interested in a thermal lunch system, we like this one by Zojirushi.

@Mary: Hi, all I can say about the insulated version is watch this space. Hopefully we will be launching a fulling insulated (and fully microwaveable) food pot early next year. The design concept is looking really cool although it is still at drawing board stage at the moment...hopefully you will see the real thing on Daily Grommet in early 2012.

With the existing range, the important thing is that they are all microwaveable and BPA free, so you are able to reheat food easily.

Nice concept! I the fact that they can go in the microwave, as the stainless carriers are really nice, but require more equipment. Two questions: how scratch resistant are the clear lids and what is the volume of each container?

@Lori: I will let Dan speak to the scratch resistance of the lids. The containers are 10 fl oz and 18.5 fl oz.

@Lori: We found that microwavable and dishwasher-safe aspect to be a huge draw. It can be such a struggle to have porcelain plates on hand at work for reheating last nights leftovers for lunch, and then there is twice as many dishes to wash and often not good place to them. With the box style, I appreciated how I could bring a grilled chicken Caesar salad to work, for example, and just reheat the chicken in its separate compartment before laying it over your cool crisp lettuce. I do suspect a metal utensil could scratch the lids if you tried, but in the with the 2 weeks of testing both have held up great with no scratches or dents. A big bonus: I am saving a lot of money by bringing leftovers vs. buying a sandwich everyday.

@Lori: Hi Lori, I don't want to get too technical, but the clear lids are pretty scratch resistant for polymers. They definitely scratch more easily than glass, but are more resistant than some other clear polymers which you might have experience with. The other good thing about the main bodies is that they are more resistant to staining than standard food containers.

Hi and thanks to the designers!! I received the green detailed lunch box as a gift at Christmas. Loved it until the snap-closure broke. Question: how can I receive a new lid with working closure? Happy to pay for replacement, but rather not purchase entire kit new.

Any chance of getting that link for for me? I've had and loved mine for a couple months now and it just broke this morning. 1-2 uses a week for two months doesn't seem unreasonable.

While you're at it, how about a left handed version of the fork? It's a great design as long as you're using it in your right hand...

@Aaron C: If you like the fork style but need it for a leftie, too, you will love the Knork. I will send you a link for the lid.

I am seeing some issues with broken snap closures. I work in an extremely security conscious environment so see-through everything is a big plus and very appreciated. Before I buy is there a design flaw with the snap closure I need to be aware of? This seems like a great product and something my co-workers would love. Even my lunchbox is see through!

@denise adams: Because this is a public, Google-able forum, people have found us who have had this issue. Since we provide a direct link to the manufacturer, they get better service from us than from whom they purchased originally. However, I am happy to report that we personally have not yet fielded any complaints from our own customers about these snaps breaking. If it does happen, however, Black + Blum will replace it.

I know this is all information from 2011, but, I just found this item oin Grommet today, May 4, 2012. I was very interested in ordering the Box Appetit and the Lunch Pot but are all sold oiut. Will Grommet ever have these on sale again? Was this just from 2011 and not available again? Thank you for all the unique items that You offer us.
